My son has only gotten a letter saying he was scholastically accepted at USNA in December...is that it for him? Have no LOA or nomination, could that still happen?

LOA’s are not a requirement for admission to USNA. In fact, the majority of Midshipmen appointees DO NOT receive LOA’s, so no worry there.

A nomination is required to compete for appointment at USNA, and those can come from a variety of sources. Everyone is eligible to apply to their Member of Congress and both US Senators as well as the Vice President. VP noms might be one or two per year. I assume that your son applied for all of those, or at least the MOC and Senators.

If you’re concerned, your best bet is probably to start with the Blue and Gold Officer and see what he/she knows about your son’s candidacy.

You need to be triple qualified - scholastically, physically (Candidate Fitness Assessment) and medically (DODMERB physical) AND have the nomination to compete for appointment. If your son is missing one of those pieces, he will not be considered for appointment in this cycle. Check with the BGO to get status on those four pieces. If the BGO doesn’t know, call Admissions.

You should also be able to check DODMERB to get medical status.

PM me if you have any additional questions. I’m a grad, BGO and have two sons at USNA in 2010 and 2011.

Good luck to your son!

I would start with calling the sources of all your nomination requests. Even though they should be recorded now and the BGO should know the status, going to the source may give you invaluable information.

Not having a nomination is a hurdle but perhaps not an insurmountable one if you have the BGO and Admissions working for you.

Thanks for your reply, it was most helpful. My son’s BGO is hard to reach but will have him start there and move to admissions if need be. He has an appointment already to the AF Academy but first choice is Naval Academy. He has all 3 of the 4 requirements, just not the nomination, and am just concerned they have been given out and since he did get one for the AF Academy he won’t get another from the other sources. Thank you for your help!

Other nomination sources include the VP and Supe.
I assume he has applied for the VP.

Agree that you should have your son contact his BGO. If the BGO is not available, next step would be to contact the regional director [admissions can give you the contact info]

The Supe has 50 nominations to use according to Title X. I may have posted this link before, but it is the US Code related to nominations and appointments. It’s pretty easy reading.

[US CODE: Title 10,6954. Midshipmen: number](http://www.law.cornell.edu/uscode/10/usc_sec_10_00006954----000-.html)

Which is why your first call should be to the MOCs to get the definite word on this. The BGO will only know what Admissions has entered and with the weather they are running behind. I am not sure that all the MOC noms have been posted yet.
