helping friend: appeal ucla/ucsd

My friend got rejected from ucsd and ucla: however she got accepted to USC.
She has a 4.23 gpa, 1750 SAT ( i know that not the best), drill team 3 years, steering committe. She cant afford USC, so she isn't going there. She really wants to got o ucla or ucsd. So, should she appeal or not?

bump please

first of all what was your friend's major? I cannot stress this enough with my younger friends...IT ALL COMES DOWN TO YOUR PERSONAL STATEMENTS. Grades are cool and ec's but in reality it is just a lame list of A's and hours. You have to know how to communicate who you are through your personal statements. My SATs were low 1720, but I had a 4.4 weighted GPA and a 4.1 unweighted but I wrote about overcoming my dads abusive drug induced behavior and how I am a versatile person and all that jazz. It was not a pity story but I wanted schools to know that I was more than just a gpa. Plus appealing is weird. Your friend should just accept it. Maybe your friend can have my admissions to LA and SD. I am going to Berkeley.

I couldn't agree more with the person who posted before me. Keep in mind that when you do appeals, the key words that need to be on your mind is NEW and COMPELLING. Is there anything that has changed since the app was submitted? In doing this letter, always remember that it's not what you say, but how you phrase things that make a difference.

ikeXY, how can you have a 4.1 unweighted?

hahahhahah christalena2

thank you for your advice. I don't know what her personal statement said, and i think her major is engineering, but i was surprised she got rejected from LA and SD, when she got accepted into a more selective school such as USC for a engineering major i think.

Xslim12, I don't know how to help because I am going an appeal process myself. =[

If your friend truly believes that it's her number 1 school. She should try an appeal. That's what I think.

=.= No yelling now.

"hahahhahah christalena2"

was that a, Im dumb, haha, or a good point, haha?

christalena2, its funny because the max unweighted you can have is a 4.0. A good point! But ike might have made a typo :-/

ahh, ok.

(10 char)

if you mention something on your appeal that gets you extra points, enough to bring you over the requirement for lets say UCSD, does that mean you're then in, or do they still have to put you through consideration?

have your friend figure out how many points for UCSD first -- call the admissions office or find the rubric online (it was posted somewhere, search). if she's within a reasonable range then figure out something she can get more points in and appeal for that.

ucla, it's probably similar.. unless you have something new and exciting and amazing that will make them want to accept her, then appealing will probably be useless.
