Here it is: EA Class of '09 Hopefuls Post Your Decisions

i'm west coast, sf bay area. umm and drdomuch is west coast, too, from that other thread with the idiotic subject

I'm in the Midwest.

Congratulations. Honestly, I never expected 1.) that the letters would arrive so soon and 2.) that anybody I've ever met would get in. I have this image in my mind of "All of the people they accept are genius wonderful amazing genuises who all live in special amazing palaces for geniuses and who were all totally shoe-ins" or something of that nature. If you guys know what I mean...? Like, everyone here at CC is fairly normal, I think. And I have this idea, kind of stupid, that there was nobody normal accepted to MIT EA. Just paranormal, extra-extra-extraordinary kids who definitely deserve it.

But I'm so glad I'm wrong... so there's hope yet. Although I won't be surprised if I get rejected... SOMEBODY has to.

lol JLP -

I guess we'll have to take a few for the team :(

Hopefully it doesn't have to come to that :)

wow, congrats for everybody already admitted! never would have imagined they came so so soon. i'm from the west coast, a wee bit south of sf, who also gets to wait an antagonizingly long forty-eight hours or so before the postman farts up the driveway. until then, let's keep our heads up and stay optimistic!

cheers,
jon

I guess we'll have to take a few for the team>>>>

No! You guys are great!

Man, I tried finding something to read so that I'd forget about waiting for MIT's admissions, and right on top of my readin' pile was Technology Review. Wow. This is lame.

Try a comic book. No, seriously. Don't try any heavy reading, like The Brothers Karamazov or anything because eventually your mind starts to wander and you'll end up thinking about MIT.

How about study a few hours for my finals? I forgot to turn a double daily grade in in calculus so got two 50's for a six weeks, giving me an 82. That means I have to study math while I think about how if I get accepted into MIT I'll look back at my calc BC class and laugh about how easy it was.

However, I'm trying to get all my work done early, so I can work on my hovercraft. You can make one out of a big board, a thick plastic sheet, and a leaf blower (and it can hold a lot of weight; I've seen one before and it could hold an anvil, serval stacks of physics books, and two people and still be pretty frictionless). I'm modifying the original design so that I can redivert some of the air backwards out of a nozzle attached to a steering wheel, with a throttle lever and everything. If my propulsion system works, I'll buy a gas leaf blower and coast down the street, looking like a major geek. Awesome. If you're interested, here's the base I'm modifying: <a href="http://www.amasci.com/amateur/hovercft.html%5B/url%5D">http://www.amasci.com/amateur/hovercft.html</a>
And here's one with a propulsion system that can apparently go ~25 mph:
<a href="http://www.xinventions.com/main/hovercrafts/second.htm%5B/url%5D">http://www.xinventions.com/main/hovercrafts/second.htm</a></p>

Yes, that should definitely get my mind of MIT.

I think that instead of great and good, you guys should use values 0-255, written in ascii, so that we will all unconciously memorize the ascii code. Unicode might be a challenge though. But CONGRATS EVERYONE WHO GOT IN. and those who got otherwise, don't give up!

For those who already got accepted, thanks for still being on board. It has been helpful.

hey feezus. I was building a hovercraft first! Anyway, mine's a little bigger. btw, youre gonna need a ginormous base if you want to lift an anvil and two people with a leafblower. My friends and I are using a 10 HP engine for both lift and thrust (40 MPH baybe), and were still worried it wont be enough due to inefficiency, lack of a proper thrust duct etc. Anyway, good luck on your hovercraft and in getting into MIT.

mmm i made a self-designed hovercraft for 2 ppl with a leafblower a long time ago

didnt work so well lol good luck w/ the hovercraft

Hey let's make a hovercraft using toothpicks and aluminium foil, McGuyver style!

Hahaha.

Thank-you.

No matter what happens, I'm sure I'll come back to the board. After all, it's more the people here that are the draw instead of whatever slight admissions edge (if there even is one) we get from the discussion/info/tips. I don't think anyone here is selfish enough to say, "Well, I got in, so I don't need these freaks anymore!"

Speaking of leafblowers, if you tape/glue a paint roller (without the sponge covering) onto the front of a leafblower (so that when you turn on the blower, it turns the roller) and put two (or three if you can fit it) rolls of toilet paper onto the roller, you have yourself a Tee-pee-ing machine. Far more efficient! The wonders of technology.

You gotta love the automatic house wrappers, JLP, but they are far too noisy for surreptitious house wrappings.

Yeah, the one that carried all of the weight was a six-foot in diameter circle.

Woohoo, I got in!

Haha, well I did get in... the minor detail being it was two years ago.

Anyway, congrats to all those who got in. Enjoy this thing we call "sleep" while you can. (Half-joking)

Anyway, finals week is this week, so the MIT people are bunkered down and studying. (If you really want to see MIT at its toughest, come visit the weekend before finals week :P).

Still, this place is awesome and I would choose no other. Hopefully you admits accept the offer!

Who is "Fabrice from Milli Vanilli"?

Jon, where are you? I'm in Palo Alto--go to Gunn.

Hovercraft....interesting. In my so-called spare time I must look into this....I'll use it with snow on the ground, think, once the people have stopped using the fields.
I can't steer for my life.
