Here's a lengthy rant on CC: Can my scores kill me?

So it seems that i can’t take standardized tests, both times I took the SAT i recieved the same EXACT freakin’ score (even after all my hard studying!). And the rest of my stats seem to be fine, I have good EC’s, hopefully good teacher recs, excellent councelor statement (he let me read it!), great interview, and good essays (my english teacher loved it!).

but my only problem is my test scores. yes, they are low…VERY LOW…not the typical penn image of a low SAT score such as 1300 or so, but lower! yes…like a 1140 both times i took the dang test…so what am i up to for this Early Decision pool? i live in a state where just a handful of students go to penn every year, yet with all these chances, my stupid scores won’t help me get in!?

so i was wondering if anyone else is currently on that same track, or knows someone who got into penn with that track. i have no exceeding hooks (no legacies and im Asain) so what do you think my chances could be?

sorry for the lengthy rant!

try the act.

i did, but i did worse on it! :( i took it again in october, do you know when they mail you those scores?

so how do you think i could be placed in the ED pile?

You'll find out soon enough. Just try not to go crazy, there's nothing you can do now. ;)

yeah true...well i guess i can just say that by adumb person like me applying to penn, all of your chances have risen, especially if they see your guys' applications right after reading my hideous one, congrads to you all :( :(

wombat: i'm sure the SAT score is important but so does everything else. i don't think it's going to kill you. Hope u get in.

If your GPA is strong, I'm sure it will make up for it at least partially. There have been some in the past accepted with SAT scores in the 1200's, and an 1140 is not far off. Keep your chin up but continue to prepare your other applications. By the way, where else are you applying?

thanks Mimisugar and KRabble for your guy's support...lol penn does have nice ppl on this board :)...but i dunno, i guess we'll have to see what will happen come december (ah its so close)

yeah my gpa is strong-a 4.0 exactly with fairly decent grades and aps. i go to a really competitive school so they don't rank. i dont want to sound obnoxious or anything but i just hope my scores don't contradict what my application COULD have reflected. and the fact that im asian doesnt even help, the other guy applying at my school is hispanic and the other has an outstanding commitment in sports.

well i'm also applying to:
Georgetown
Duke (another dream school-but not as dreamy as out PENN!)
Boston College
Univ. Colorado -Boulder
USD
Texas A&M
U of Washington
and maybe, maybe, WashU and UC San Diego

...all for a concentration in Bio, lol

THat's awesome. i'm not applying to penn i'm doing ED to cornell. the reason i'm on the penn forum is cuz of my friend.

ah cornell, good school as well. are going to apply to penn RD?

well if ur premed(bio) its hard to become a doctor later on when you have to take mcats, which are looked at even more than the SATs are for undergrad.

not applying to penn at out (i can almost hear u breathe out the air).

ive heard people got in with 1100s so you should be fine. i was sort of in the same boat as you but if you have a hook you shouldnt have to worry. it really depends on what penn is looking for. if you happen to be what they are looking for then you have nothing to worry about. also, what did you get on your sat IIs. if you scored high on the bio then maybe that will factor out the sat Is. but try taking them again in december if you can. i've improved 140 points but it took me 5 times to do it.

5 times?!! wow! well i got 720 on SAT II bio, 670 on chem, and 680 on math IIC, and 560 on spanish (pretty bad i know). should i still retake them? im worried still cause i feel i may do worse or have the same scores if i retoke them, which is what had happened when i retoke the SAT I.

well see, i want to major in bio because i want to be either a pharmacist or work in research labs, and i kinda mentioned that in my essays so maybe they'll see that, i don't know.

my only hook is my geographic location, but it probably doesnt help that i live in the school that is the only one in this state to send their kids to penn...ahh why does life seem so wicked at times!!!??

Cdeitz60---did those ppl with 1100s have any other exceptional stats or hooks that distinguished them from the other applicants.

obviously if you get an 1100 you need a hook....usuall economic disadvantage, URM, or first-gen.....prob more

take the chance...who knows who will get in

wombat: im waiting for my sat ii scores to come in on monday. i also applied for bio so hoping for high 700 range. you only need two SAT IIs really that have good scores. i'd take them again if you wanted but id say theyre fine. the sat Is i did horrible on the 5th one but my writing score went up 60 pts so that was the only good thing about it.

about the 1100s, some kid from wharton said that to me about people he knew. im not sure if he had any hooks though. but most people, with 1200s, have a hook, usually a recruit, a state where barely any people are accepted from, first generation college, etc.

yes, well i went for the chance, now i need a letter telling me yes or no. for all those who didnt get accepted, we'll have some sort of reunion to comemorate our "unoticible stats"

does anyone know when we'll recieve our Oct ACT scores??

what did you get overall on your sat Is they look at the whole picture.

the overall score was literally the exact same for each sitting on the SAT I score in one sitting. the two sittings i took, i recieved the same score of 1140.

yes, i have come to a conclusion: the ETS hates me :(
