Here's my numbers...so chance me maybe? Cornell ED

Hey all,

I posted a chance thread earlier about some schools, and I'm really gracious for the comments. However, I can't edit my OP, and I've been looking for input on some other schools that came to mind (nobody could really help me on those because everyone looked at the OP and chanced, not my sprinkled pleas for a chance/two for other schools in the thread), including my first choice school.

I know reposting is a CC no-no, but I'm desperate to hear a chance or two on my first choice school, and four others that I'm considering applying to.

I'm looking at Cornell ED (really need info on this), Tufts, Rice, Georgetown REA and UMiami.

Anyways, here's my description; I'll chance back promptly to anyone who asks for it. Thanks, and sorry again for the repost! (This thread probs won't last past the second page, and I'll make it my last chance thread)

Asian Male, Massachusetts resident for 12 years, Bengali-Japanese (those two languages and English spoken at home).

I go to a competitive HS of 2000 or so.
My 99 problems are my GPAs of 3.2/4 UW and 4.15/5 W. (Naviance tells me avg school accepted WGPA ED is 4.3...includes recruits though)
No ranking in my school, but from what I know, I just make hte top 25 percent of my (fairly competitive, if I say so myself) class.

SAT of 2110, M730, R670, W710. School avg accepted is 2146, bearing in mind we do have occasional athletic recruits (lower scores depending on who is recruited)
ACTs taken...awaiting results. Think I snagged over a 30, maybe a 32 (hoping higher, but I timed out on some sections)
SAT Subject tests of 710 Math 2, 700 Chem, and 670 Bio Eco (meh)
AP Scores:
4 on USH (self study)
4 on Enviro Science (self study)
4 on Chem (grrr)
4 on Bio :not bad face:

I bet my essay will be decent. Not great, but polished, entertaining, and revealing about my character. I'd be willing to call it an 8/10.

Transcript: I tend towards a Honors/AP heavy schedule, usually at a 5:2 ratio compared to normal (Curic I) classes. Frosh year is the exception, as we couldn't take any honors that aren't math.

Freshman year: Honors Math, Curic I World History, French, English, Engineering Tech, Intro Physics. A-/B+ for my courses

Sophomore year: Honors Math, World History, Chemistry, English, Curic I French and Robotics. Peer tutor. B+/B average for my courses

Junior Year: Honors Math, Honors English, AP Bio, AP Chem, Curic I USH, French, and Engineering. Bish average....

Senior year: AP English, AP AB Calc, AP Psych. Honors Engineering, Honors Physics, and Curic I drafting. Planning on TAing for my Honors Chemistry teacher, maybe even getting a rec from her....

My 99 problems (aka my GPA) really stem from three courses that I really flopped at (and didn't learn my lesson from). Sophomore Honors Math I got a B- in, ignore the warning signals and got a C in Honors the next year. Got a B- in AP Chem as well...

That same Chemistry teacher still maintains a respect for me, as Chemistry is my most favorite subject (want to be a pharmacist in the future) and he was one of the best teachers I had, so he is writing my rec. It will be decent, but not a ringer of any sort.

My Honors English teacher will write a slightly better one, as its a class where I truely opened up to and did decently in. I really liked that class and put through my efforts in speaking often, to which he respects and remembers....

And as I said, the teacher I had soph year for Honors CHem, who I TA for can write a glowing third rec JIC.

Onto my ECs:

Sports:
-Varsity in XC and Track
-Varsity XC skiier, and captain
-Made the Mass State team three years in a row
-Skiied in a well-known club team, in ski circles, for two years.
-Top 10 at Mass States---not going to say which place for identity's sake, but I surprised myself

Work:
-Worked at a Sharma shop for 2 months at minimal pay Sophmore year, before the mangement changed.
-Worked as a Babysitter Freshman summer
-Worked at my local Ski track, teaching young children how to ski this winter.

Volunteer work:
-Taught iPad lessons at the Senior Center, basing lessons around my tutees and their needs
-Researched at Dana Farber Cancer Institute last summer, participating in bench work.
-Worked as a Peer Tutor in high school sophmore year, teaching physics and math to those that needed it.
-Orthodontist's shadow twice a week, soph and senior year
-Going to TA for my Chemistry teacher, as stated above...

Academic/School awards:
-AP Scholar with Honors award
-Recommended to be school peer mediator (by counselor)
-Recommended to Diversity in a diverse society class (by principal)
-Recommended for Keys to Success award (I have no idea who was behind this)

Other stuff:
-Speak three languages at home, learning two others (French and Arabic) in school
-Taught myself automobile mechanics via experience and forum lurking/posting
-featured in the newspaper for some little good deed I did some while back. While I won't post it here for security's sake, and because I think its no big deal personally, I suppose colleges might like to hear of such an event

Now y'all have the 411 on my life, thoughts? Thanks again!

Tl;DR--Asian mix with interesting background, decent (but not great) scores and grades, and somewhat interesting ECs and whatnot. Applying to some high end schools, and want some honest opinions and feedback.

TGIF bump!

friday night lights bump

bump! I do chance back ASAP.

Firstly, you don’t have to bump every few hours.

Cornell is out of reach or at least very high in my opinion, even if you apply ED. The GPA hurts you a lot. I’d say that Tufts, Georgetown and Rice are all high reaches too. UMiami is definitely doable though, I want to say high match, but i’m not sure.

You are well rounded… only GPA lacking…

Right damn good essays

Low to mid reach

Alright. Good, pretty solid stats. ECs are great, just make sure that something that you stuck to for a while is obvious in the app.
Otherwise, you seem solid. You’ve done sports and maintained a relatively strong academic profile so I would not worry too much.
Good luck! :)

A low GPA but everything else is pretty much perfect.

I’d say that Cornell is a high match/low reach.

Tufts and UMiami: match definately.
Rice, Georgetown:match(but it will be more competitive if you get 2200+ in SAT)
The rest of the universities I am not so sure.

That is my opinion, and I chance back. Good luck, buddy!

Ugh, stuck debating between Cornell ED, Georgetown REA, and JHU ED. Which one (lets pretend all the schools I’m equally fans of; I have little preference between each, although Cornell does let you bring a car on campus frosh year  ) am I least likely to get rejected at?

(yeah, bad phrasing, but I guess its a total crapshoot at that sort of levels of applicants)

Naviance GPA/SAT wise Ive actually good chances of getting in at Cornell; including like two athletes, 8/13 have been accepted ED over the past few years…avg SAT score basically the same, but accepted GPA is still .3ish higher than me ED. (I do have diversity on my side though, unlike the other applicants, my counseor reminds me.) JHU and Georgetown are a notch above, but notably lack athletic recruits that may skew the accepted avg GPA and SAT readings…

Thanks, and I’ll chance back anyone who gives me a link!

Cornell ED (thinking CAS or Engineerin) vs JHU ED: which school would possibly be “easier” to get into, or which one would I be less likely to be rejected by (I know, not the best way to think about admissions; this is just for curiosity) bump!

I’d say you have the greatest chance of acceptance with JHU ED. Georgetown REA would be next. Cornell may be a reach due to your SAT and GPA, but your stellar ECs and diversity should have a big impact. So to answer you question, I believe JHU ED would be “easier” to get into based on your stats. This is only my opinion though. You stand a good chance of acceptance at any of these universities. Additionally, I agree with JK031004; UMiami and Tufts are definitely matches. Good luck with all your applications! You will get into a great school no matter what.

bump! Cornell ED vs JHU ED, where do I have a better shot at? Thanks. Will chance back!

I don’t normally do chance, but in reading some of those posts I have stick my neck out, you chance of getting in JHU, Cornell, Georgetown or Rice is very low, RD or ED. Don’t waste your ED on either Cornell or JHU. I think you need to have a better list. Your SAT scores match your top 25% ranking, and your AP scores are in the 4s. Harsh, yes. But it is better than for you to think those schools are possible and be disappointed. What’s your GC telling you?

Low reach cornell and reach JHU if I go ED.

I have a diverse background and character (not that other applicants don’t for that matter) that may be that extra push for me (if my laundry list meant anything to you).

I am not academically spectacular, but if college admissions officers try to picture if they’d think I’d fit the attitude of Cornell/whatever and see me as the type that might be interesting enough to admit…I’d have the tiniest chance of acceptance. As long as they think I’d be someone cool enough to room with, someone with the right attitude and accomplishments, who knows, maybe they’ll have to look twice before marking my file with a red “R.” And I’d be willing to take that crapshot if that’s the case.

Thank you for your chance (and reality check), but I’ll still look towards the stars for ED (I have another chance threads for “match schools,” I promise).

Exactly in your same situation, rigorous courses, avg GPA, and avg - low SAT. It’ll be a High - medium reach. I’m applying ED as well. Hope we get to meet :D

Bump! I’ll chance you back if you leave a link!

Bump! Looking for helpful input. Thinking CAS over CoE because that’s where I feel I’d be more comfortable…and it helps that CAS isn’t as self-selecting as CoE (even if the actual admission rate is lower)

cornell is a decent stretch for you and since you only get 1 ED i would use it wisely…you could always apply RD and have your gpa be a smidge higher from sem 1 courses which may increase your chances but do whatever your heart tells you in the end and good luck  your sats are on par with jhu, georgetown, and rice and you have some cool ECs too!
