Herndon

We are going out to Annapolis to witness Herndon. Any tips or advice?
Thanks

Get there early! Try to get a good vantage point (almost impossible)! Enjoy! It doesn’t matter where you are you will be able to move around during the many hours long excitement. Bring the Camera. It takes a while for it to end. Good fun for all. You will laugh and cheer a lot as they almost make it the third, fourth, fifth …time.

How do you think the rain will change things. Will it wash off lard, making it easier? or making it more slippery and harder?

Rain doesn’t wash off the lard. Just makes it messier and more slippery. However, I’m not sure the plebes even notice. :)

The Plebes will not notice - especially since the upper class typically has water hoses spraying on them!

We stayed in one spot - up at the top of a section of bleachers. It was a great vantage point.

Anyone know if the new 'Dant has reversed the silly, dangerous rule of last year, i.e. no whiteworks? Thank the Navy God for new 'Dant!!

What rain?

The rain that weather.com has forecasted. I think I read somewhere else that it is a 30% chance. That means a 70% chance of no rain, right? Plebes won’t care about rain. I hope the weather holds out for Blue Angels demo and Graduation.

???

As I seem to recall, for the class of 2010 they all ran towards Herndon in their white works and then proceeded to strip to a blue rim and USNA running shorts. The white works were left on the grass only to be piled up and hauled off by USNA Facilities (or a few small kids who were scrounging for things!) The entire Class of 2010 was in their shorts for the entire climb, and many either shirtless or in their Blue Rims.

anyone else like me have a mid on block 0? I find myself very uninterested in Herndon all of a sudden now that he is somewhere off the coast of FLA. I think he might have been part of the detachment standing by for the shuttle launch… If the destroyer is following the carrier it is called plane guard, so if the they are orbiting nearby is it called spaceship guard??? :)

2012 will miss having your Plebe at the bottom of the pyramid!

re: the whiteworks …they were used to help strip the lard. 2011 was not allowed to wear them in Herndon. Nor were they allowed hoses to cool the group, help remove the lard. In the end, many agreed it created a somewhat dangerous scenario as there was nothing to remove the lard except for tee shirts which were not effective. Made the event substantially longer as well.

None seemed to think that Dant’s attempt at leaving her mark was anything but ridiculous.

But the question remains …what’s this year’s deal?

You mean the 270lb guys don’t get to climb to the top??? :(

Had planned to go this week but guess at least I saved a ticket price! Big adventure started today for my mid, off to Japan via sub. I did get the DVD of Sea Trials and Herndon for him cause his company will be there. He’ll be a Plebe-No-More somewhere in the middle of the Pacific! I think…

I hope everyone going to Herndon has fun!

“during the many hours long excitement.”

Many hours… who are you kidding?

Ok, Ok. Hour and a half to Two and a half hours of excitement for just the recent numbers.

0 Block here too. It was kind of sad for me to miss the Herndon activities due to my son experiencing the submarine life. I hope it goes well for his fellow classmates!

May be she was going back to the way things were done in her day. My year (only a few removed from hers) we wore only T-shirts and shorts - NO whiteworks. Females wore bathing suits under their shirts. Everyone took off shirts and that’s all we had to clean off the lard. I recall a wet moat around Herdon but don’t recall anyone being hosed down – it may have happened and I’ve just forgotten. Certainly there was no hosing off of the lard. Of course, it took our class something like 3-4 hrs to scale Herndon.

Not saying it was better in our day – just that the former Dant’s approach wasn’t as totally odd as it might have at first appeared appeared.

As of late last week, the rule in place was that the pounds of lard being permitted was reduced by [I think] 2/3. Lard limit was down to about 50 -75 pounds. Also restrictions on when the lard could be applied, etc.

Talked to Son today on block 0 cruise just pulled back into port and I let him know that his class had rapidly ascended Herndon.

His Response was…

Mmmm lets see. Being on the bottom of a pile of my sweaty, slimy, smelly classmates, or,
Firing a .50cal Machine gun
Driving the Ship
Firing Flash bangs from a shot gun.
Seeing Dolphins and Sharks in the crystal blue carribean waters,
Seeing a torpedo launch
taking part in ASW exercise…

Not Missing Herndon so Much,
