Hesitant about declaring a major, have to do it by the end of the semester

So basically I've been planning to major in business, specifically information systems. My uni's business school is limited enrollment, meaning you need to apply to get in. I've heard a ton of ranges about the acceptance rate for the program, and I worry that I may not get in. But more importantly, I worry that it may not be what I want to do.

I've been taking criminology & criminal justice courses every semester out of interest. They're pretty great, and this semester my favorite course is my criminal law course. All the courses for the major sound very interesting, and I've always wanted to work in some sort of law enforcement-type thing. But the job prospects for criminology majors tend to be worse than business majors at my school, even though we have an excellent program. I'm scared that if I major in criminology and don't get a job with the police or the government I'll end up serving lattes at Starbucks. At least my business degree would basically ensure a decent job out of college (assuming I get great grades).

Is anyone else at this juncture in their college career where you basically have to pick what you're gonna do with your life?

Are there opportunities for employment if you relocate? It’s better to do what you love a bit further away than to do something you hate for 40 hours per week.

Where I’m at, business degrees are a dime a dozen and there are at least 5 students in just my chemistry lab that have bachelor’s degrees in business administration but are back in school because they couldn’t find employment. One girl has been working as a receptionist for $10 an hour with her business admin degree.

My Ex had to move to Georgia to get a job as a police officer, but, he loves it and feels it was worth relocating.

There are actually a fair amount of opportunities around here for both the business concentration I’m interested in (information systems) and in law enforcement. Either way I’d actually be interested into going into law enforcement in some capacity. I know the FBI likes accounting and info systems majors, although straight out of college they only hire analysts (but they do recruit from my campus). The problem I have with a criminal justice major is that if law enforcement doesn’t work out then my options are more limited. Whereas with an IS degree I can always go into some other related field.

I would major in IS and minor in the other desired area; just to be on the safe side.

Asking the obvious here…can you double major? Have you spoken to someone in the CJ department about what the job prospects would be?

There was a thread on the parents forum a while ago, and it turned out that a remarkably large number of people were not working in the field they had majored in. Life is too short to be working in a career you’re not passionate about!

Consider what you really want to do for the rest of your life, and then work your butt off to achieve it.

I majored in psychology. I originally wanted to become a clinician. Then I had my stats and research methods classes and loved them - then I wanted my doctorate in social psychology to do research. Since I’ve graduated I got a job as a retail manager and what do you know, I now have a serious interest in marketing research and will be applying to doctorate programs in that field instead of psychology next year (or possibly both to keep my options open, haven’t decided yet). You never know where you’ll end up or when you’ll find a new interest. I know a lot of business majors who got nowhere with their degree. And i know a lot of retail managers working their way up to store, district, and regional management who never has anything beyond a few classes - no degree. Or who only went back to school when they reached a certain level in order to make their selves more competitive. Business degrees do not guarantee much if you don’t have the right personality to get where you want to be.
