Hello. There are three of us (me, my 2 bros) using this id.

I'm currently a junior studying in Thailand.

Two of my brothers have graduated this year and are going to US (one who wanted williams got into Middlebury and one who wanted Columbia got into CMU).

Since one of my brothers has got into CMU (CMU is so so so expansive) my parent can't support me getting into another university in US.

Therefore I'm thinking of applying to universities in Singapore and hong kong since they are relatively cheap compared to those in US.

I read all the requirements and read at least 2100 sat 1/2 score is required to get into NUS or University of HK.

I took SAT last january and got score of 2180, but my CGPA is not that good (around 3.1 I guess)

Do Unis in Singapore and hong kong consider GPA importantly?

Will high SAT score be able to cover my GPA and help me getting an admission?

Please.. This question is so so important to me. I want to know whether I have hope of getting in despite of my GPA.

i cant tell you your chances, because no one knows for sure what they are. but regarding SATs...lets just say they can only save a dying man, but not a dead one.

NUS,NTU - your GPA&SAT are only can make you pass the first round. (which is you are eligible to do the exams).. the exams are A/O-level in many subjects (depends on your major). Its a very competitive univ.. other applicants usually hv many honors and awards..
SMU - SAT above 2000,,basically you hv a big chance to pass for the interview.

i dont really know about uni of hongkong,,but i guess it will just as hard as NUS&NTU (maybe slightly below them)..

anw,,yes,,your GPA is really2 important..they will basically only look your transcript for the first elimination,,hihihi.. the representatives of NUS usually said "as long as you hv above 80% GPA,,you're good to apply"
---hell right,,just good to apply,,not even able to do the test..

good luck anyway,,
try Aussie/Indian univs,,

Thank you loathed and clam_chowder. I appreciate your words of advice.

We have lived in both places so would like to share with you what we know:
The 3 top universities in HK are the University of Hong Kong (best reputed faculties are law and medicine while the Faculty of Business and Econ is rather new but I heard that are launching a EMBA program with Columbia University and London Business School), The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (strongest in business - ranked 1st in EMBA and 17th in full time MBA in the world) and the Chinese University of Hong Kong (Math). Of course the Hong Kong Polytechnic University offers top-notch programs in fashion design, accounting and hotel management. Also, the Baptist University is ranked 1st in media communications.

In economics, HKU, HKUST and CUHK were ranked 138th, 69th and 85th in the world. The National University of S'pore was ranked 142nd.

As far as HK is concerned, public exam results count most - A-level, predicted IB results etc.

NUS = ranked 30+ overall in the world (better than CMU, UCLA etc!) according to the latest TIMES rankings

If you are thinking of studying engineering, then perhaps NUS would be a better choice than NTU and HK universities because NUS is ranked 10th in the world for technology (TIMES 2008). If you do well in your first/second year, you can receive scholarships that sponsor your education in the US. If i were you, i would go for NUS! It is internationally renowned and they have a very good medical school (NUS-Duke). National University of Singapore (NUS) - Towards a Global Knowledge Enterprise

kwaldner, if you seriously think NUS is better than CMU... I don't know what else to say. NUS is just plainly over-hyped up in that ranking. Anw Times ranking is skewed towards the Commonwealth countries.

(Aren't you studying for CTs??)

Yes I have CTs! Slacking now..haha ><

NUS is cheap if you get full-tuition scholarships which are not that difficult to get. CMU is good for engineering, quite alot of A*Star scholars there I think. I can't assess your chances though.

^^ kwaldner, lol I bet you're taking Physics, and Physics is on Friday, so that's why you're slacking now... Hahahaa

That's correct! How do you know? haha ^^

Because... I just bumped into one of my juniors and they told me they have bio tomorrow. So means physics is on Fri la! Hahahaha.
