So, as of late, I've decided that I would very much so like to go to NYU. As a young child, NYU had always been my first choice, though growing up, I've gone back and forth with universities, but have come to the conclusion that NYU is my #1 choice. Excuse my ignorance, but sadly, I don't know an amazing amount about it. =/ I was wondering if anyone would like to help me out in answering my questions, which I will list below.

1) What are average ACT/SAT scores for NYU students? (I've searched online, haven't really found anything.)

2) What will help make my application stand out? Where should my emphasis lie, extracurriculars or academics?

3) What is it like to be at NYU? What is it like dorming there? Are there clubs and activities I would be able to join? What are the people like?

4) I want to become a psychiatrist but also want a major in philosophy. Odd I know, how do you think this will play out?

Here's just a bit more information about me:

I'm a female student of Middle Eastern descent (sophomore). Ranked around 30/650 (this was a bit higher last year, I kinda had a bad year this year, hoping to bring that rank back up). I'm in the top 5% of my class in a school which is considered competitive. I haven't taken the ACTs or SATs yet, so I can't post those. Umm, and I plan on taking 10-12 APs throughout high school. I'm also an active member of my school's Student Council, SAE (students action for education), and plan on hopefully starting a charity committee at my school by next year.

thank you! =]

1.) http://admissions.nyu.edu/fast_facts/

The data for the class of 2010 is at the bottom. The range is for ALL of NYU, and out of 1600... so the average score for Stern is 1441/1600, and the ones for Tisch and Steinhardt are at the lower end of the average.

2.) Again, depends on the school. Stern puts a lot more emphasis on stats (your scores and grades) than, say, Tisch, but as a whole, NYU does take into account more your essay/ECs than other schools.

3.) This question is better off answered by someone who is going to be an upperclassman next year. NYU dorms are said to be really nice compared to other schools' dorms, though -- I saw one dorm during a tour, and it was about twice as big as a dorm at Yale (which doesn't have bad dorms either).

4.) So you'd be CAS, right? I don't think a double major should be a problem... lots of people do it.

3) No matter what anyone tells you, the dorms at NYU are far nicer than most. I've stayed overnight at Georgetown, and that was a total dump. Our dorms are also nicer than Columbia's, according to an acquiantance of mine. Private bathrooms go a long way. We also have tons of activities and clubs - if you can't find something to do, on the campus or out in the city, you're doing it wrong.

4) Psychiatrists are MDs, so you'll need to go to medical school. Should you wish to go pre-med and major in philosophy, there's absolutely nothing wrong with that. In fact, majoring in a non-science may give your medical school application a (very) slight boost.
