hey nyu students!! questions from a prospective freshman :)

I probably will be a freshman at nyu next year, do you guys mind answering some questions for me? hehe

do you ever feel like you're missing out on the whole "traditional campus experience" ?? I love the city, but I feel like sometimes I'd want a laid-back kind of environment too.. I'm from a suburban area..

how is the academics? I'll be choosing it over some schools with higher ranking and more prestige than nyu. I really like the school, and I want very strong academics - how has been your experience so far?

is it possible to double major in two different schools within nyu? (ex. stern and cas, etc.)

is it hard to make friends because the student body is not as "tightly knit" as it would have been with an actual college campus?

how is the Asian population within the student body - I want diversity, but I've grown up with a lot of asians around me (i'm also asian) and I'd like to know about the chinese/japanese/korean population there.

thanks a lot!!

I’ll answer #3 for you.

You can double major in any CAS course and another school.
Example: CAS and Tisch.
CAS and Stern.
CAS and Gal.

But you cannot double major for two schools, that are neither CAS.
Example: Stern and Tisch.
Tisch and Gal.
Stern and Stein.

Correct me if I am wrong :)

If you are in cas you cannot major in stern or tisch. If you are in stern or tisch you can major in cas as well.

Tisch requires an artistic review (portfolio or audition) to be accepted, and perhaps it is possible to switch in as a transfer. There is an Open Arts curriculum where students can take some courses at Tisch; these are electives open to anyone at NYU.

There is a HUGE Asian community here. There are particularly vibrant Chinese, Korean and Japanese communities. There are also two ‘mostly Asian’ Greek communities, a sorority and a fraternity. So if you’re looking to also have a community of Asian friends while still being in a diverse city, NYU is definitely the place to be.

Not really, I had that experience my freshman year as a transfer from penn state. I’m just too in love with the city to really think about it.

The professors I’ve taken are really knowledgeable and have a lot of real world experience.

Answered above

Plenty of student organizations and activities, but most people make friends through classes or college dorms. The process of making friends isn’t any different from any regular college campus.

There are a lot of Asians.

about those asians…go to gould plaza. nuff said. lol.

(disclosure: I’m indian, and i also go to stern).

all asians know each other. you know the deal. Mad asians at NYU

Depending on what you are majoring in, you can’t receive a double major from two separate schools but what you can do is take courses in stern if you are from cas or take courses in cas if you are from stern and get a major + minor

You can double major in a lot of majors at CAS if you are in Stern. If you are in CAS you can’t major in Stern. There are a few stern courses that are offered to CAS students who are pursuing business studies.
