I'm so glad I found these forums because everyone is so helpful. Anyways, I got into the CAS school at NYU, which I highly regret now since I've been hearing how difficult it is to transfer into Stern. However, could I still double major in, let's say biology at CAS, and then a business-related concentration at Stern? Thanks!

i don't think it's possible. however, you might be able to do a business studies minor at stern.

Are you sure about that? Because that sucks.. If I were to transfer from CAS to Stern for my sophomore year, would it be an easy switch? Or do I have to fulfill certain requirements, if any, in order to get into Stern? I guess I should be asking this to an admissions officer..

no it's not an easy switch. I hear it's hard to transfer from one college to another at nyu. and stern is like really hard to get into to begin with. I know there are requirements you have to fulfill, so take it up with your advisor next yr, and I think you have to wait a year. So you'll have to do freshman yr at CAS and then switch to Stern. But why didn't you apply to stern to begin with? did you think you would have an easier time getting into CAS and then you could just switch? (no offense, it's just some people actually do that). Or did you just decide you're really interested in business all of a sudden? haha just wondering :)

Haha good question molly4190.. No, I never intended on getting in the "easy way". I've always had passions in both medicine and business, so I assumed that I could just apply to one and double major in another. Turns out I completely chose the wrong one, because I hear that Stern students can study whatever they want at CAS. And yeah, I used to like medicine more, but recently I started falling in love with the idea of becoming a successful businessman.. I know.. LAME! haha

No, you cannot double major. I wanted to double major marketing/comm and I couldn't because I am in Steinhardt. The only thing you can do is a prebusiness minor. You'll have to transfer, and while it may be difficult, it is not even close to impossible. Just try.

Hmm.. If you can't major, then are you still allowed to take the prerequisite classes so that at least you have something to show to the graduate schools?? If that makes any sense at all..

there's a business minor offered at CAS which is in collaboration with Stern.

yeah I was gonna say, if you wanted to do a double major, then you should have applied to stern instead. oh well, you can transfer out after a year. Good luck.

I talked to the admission officials and they told me transferring from CAS to Stern is "Extremely Difficult", I even read some student saying that external transfer might be easier, though I am no sure of its accuracy.

Why don't you try applying for it and see what happens?

for transfers, they mostly care about GPA. If you think you can pull off a 3.8-4.0, then you have a pretty good chance of getting into Stern as an internal just as long as you take some business classes.

external transfer might be easier because they--like every other school--take kids with high GPA's and show potential from less academically rigorous schools.
