Does Drexel have a marching band? And if they do, how good are they? Also, what NCAA division is Drexel in?

how long does it take to get a decision after they’ve received everything?

Hey, I wanted to ask what does Drexel generally look for in Applicants. Drexel has always been my dream school but I never thought I would get in, so initally I wasn’t applying, but about a week or two ago Drexel sent me a VIP Application! After reciving that I got very excited and I decided to apply! But my SAT scores are 1560 and I am concerned about wheter I will be accepted. I was initally fine with my SAT but after I got the application it was too late to retake my SAT. I have a 4.2 GPA, and am heavily involved in Orchestra, Drama, Band Volunteer programs, and I have held a Part time job for the past year. I am extremely concerned about not getting in, as mentioned above Drexel is my dream. I just need a little piece of mind, any advice is greatly appreciated.

Hi, I am a current senior in a all girl school, and Drexel university will definitely be one of the universities that I am gonna apply to . But since I only came to America four yrs ago, and learned all English by myself, my SAT critical reading wasn’t really high, I have a total 1740, but only got a 450 on the critical reading section. I got a a 770 on math section (if that is gonna help me).
I wanna study in mechanical engineering in university.( i might gonna double major, but it all depends if I can handle it). I’m taking Ap cal BC, Ap physics, and Ap statistics right now.
I was involved in my school orchestra for 4 yrs, and hv joined 3 clubs , also in school varsity sport team.
Therefore I was wondering If I have a chance to get into Drexel university.( really love the co-op option they offered).
Thank u sooooo much.

Sorry I’ve taken a while to respond so here goes.

FutureDoctor - we do not have a marching band, this is because we do not have a football team. We do however have an excellent Pep Band (i’d know because I’m a member). We just got a new band director, because our beloved pep director, Dr. Mike Moss tragically passed away this summer. We’re still adjusting but we sound great. Drexel is CAA for basketball, I’m not sure for everything else.

laxdude43 - as you probably know, DU is rolling admission. Essentially, once they have processed EVERYthing (this takes a while here), you’ll probably receive a decision in 3-4 weeks. Be patient, that’s not a definitive number, just a ballpark figure. Best of luck!

amcasimiro - Alright, well here’s the deal, I don’t want to give you false hope because then you’ll be disappointed, but I’ll put it to you this way – if Drex offered you a VIP app, your odds are pretty good. Your GPA is good, and so are your ECs, SATs are a bit low. I’d hold on hope and if it doesn’t work out, appeal. What is your intended major - that might affect their decision. Best of luck!

Haloyyyy - Your stats look pretty good as far as being an engineer. Your SAT is a little on the low end, but you have a good shot in terms of your coursework and intended major. Your ECs are good also. Keep up the good work your senior year and don’t slack off - you have a shot. Also, being a girl and intending to have a STEM major looks excellent. Best of luck to you as well!

Thank you so much. I feel much better than before. Because lots of people in my school get very good score f the SATs. I forget to say that I also get a 670 on the SAT math level 2 subject test. I got a25 on the ACT(writing 23, math 34, English 18, science 25, I know my English is low)… But I don’t know if I should apply DU with my SAT of ACT? Or it doesn’t really matter?
I will try as hard as I can in senior year.
Thank you again and I really appreciated.

Thanks so much. I feel a little more at ease. My intended major is design and merchandising. The reason I was worried was because it would be difficult for me to retake my SAT and get my application done by the due date. So I was really concerned. But thanks so much. And I hope the fact I was sent a Vip app is a good sign

Hey @JPuck98

How competitive is the Drexel/Drexel med (BA/BS/MD) program? Even though the minimum requirement of SAT is 1360, I feel as though I need a MUCH higher SAT to get in. Also, the website says that SAT II is recommended but that is is “subject to change.” I don’t have any SAT II’s.

What stats do you think I will need to get in?

Here’s the link where I got all of the info btw.
[Accelerated Degree Program Application Process | Undergraduate Admissions | Drexel University](BA/BS+MD Early Assurance Program)

Thanks in advance!

momo1616 - alright so first a couple things 1) I don’t work in admissions, so I cannot give you a ballpark figure, and 2) everything I say must be taken with a grain of salt. Certainly I can give you advice or tell you what I think or feel but ultimately I am not employed by Drexel and therefore have no authority on basically anything other than what I’ve experienced. One of my suitemates is in the BS/MD program and essentially the program is a little bit of a bait and switch insofar as you still have to go through a sort of threshold review your sophomore year to ensure that you’re actually prepared to continue down the pre-med/med path. Additionally, ideally you’d want higher than a 1360 anyways. There’s a difference between just getting in, and being competitive. SAT IIs are recommended, that means exactly what it says it means. You don’t need 'em but keep in mind that hundreds of thousands of students nationwide take them to make themselves competitive. Ultimately, you’ll have a good shot if you just follow the criteria but you’ll look much better if you have things that make you competitive and allow you to stand out. You get paid for doing your job, you get paid well for doing it better than the other guy. Just my $0.02, and I wish you the best of luck. Drexel is a great school and I know of some people who are definitely happy with and have been afforded great opportunities to both the BS/MA and BS/MD programs. Good luck!

@JPuck98 Thanks for your advice! I’ll keep it in mind!

Is the 3 co-op option worth staying the extra year, or should I opt for the 1 co-op?

Hello!

I really need help.
Drexel is my dream school because it has the BS/MBA Music Industry program which I want to do.
I have all of the requirements, 10% of the class, 3.98 GPA but there is one issue . . .
On the October SAT I got 1190 combined CR and Math score which is 110 below the 1300 requirement. Do you think I still have a chance?
I want to do Early Decision but there is a risk that I could be only in the regular Music Industry program, which I don’t want.
My SAT score does not reflect me as a student. If I could get into this program I would work as hard as I can. I also have many academic achievements, clubs and leadership roles.
Would any of that help with getting into the program?
Also, how is the honors college? I would love to be in it!

Thanks,
JessAnneJoe

HitchFan - Well, that’s entirely up to you. It’ll probably depend on your major, and how much you want to pay. The five year, 3 co-op seems to be one of the more popular options. A lot of people are here for five years and they’re perfectly okay with that. It’ll also depend on how much work experience you want to have before you go into a ‘real job’. The 3 co-op gives you about a year and a half work experience. Ultimately it’s your call, but if you really want to get your foot in the door and get some work under your belt the 3 co-op is the way to go.

JessAnneJoe - So, just like any other college, Drexel looks at applications holistically, not just one component a piece. If it is a REQUIREMENT, as in, it is IMPERATIVE to have a 1300 to be admitted then you might not. However, if the average is that, or if that’s what most people get I’d say you’re fine. I’d apply anyways, the worst that’ll happen is you get rejected. I’d try to network with some professors to see if there’s the opportunity to reapply perhaps winter term of your freshman year if you demonstrate some real promise as a student (it sounds like you do). Honors college at Drexel… a little bit of a joke. But that’s okay, you get to take some super interesting special topics classes that a lot of your classmates don’t get to and you get free printing/access to the honors lounge. Also, it looks good. Just keep your GPA up. Best of luck!

Okay. I will try Regular Decision for it.
Honors seems so awesome!
Thank you for taking the time to answer my questions!
Thanks again,
JessAnneJoe

Hey JPuck,

I applied ED at Drexel for the Custom-Designed Major. Do you know anyone in this program?

If so, what do they think?

neblix - Which custom-designed major? I know a couple. A friend of mine is a creative writing custom-design major and he loves it. I think the flexibility it affords you is something you will find less constricting and thus easier to register for classes (an actual problem at DU). However, if you have a crappy advisor it could put you at a severe disadvantage. Since you applied ED, I assume DU is your top. In which case, if you have any other questions feel free to PM me here. Best of luck! If you have any more specific questions I’d be more than happy to give you an answer to the best of my ability.

I created my own. It’s basically a full Computer Science degree with the game track mixed with a lot of the tech stuff from the Music Industry program, like Recording I-III and Audio for Video. It has some Electrical Engineering stuff too. The whole premise is music technology in computers (mostly software), music for media (specifically video games), and programming video games.

This is an older version of the vision statement + study plan. Since then I’ve changed some courses around (and I obviously will be continuously changing it as I go through the years).
Back when I talked to the program manager in summer, he really liked my idea and said I was a great fit for the program. I also talked to a couple of the Drexel MET Lab guys and they also liked my idea. :D

hi @JPuck98!
With Drexel being on the quartary system, do you ever get to see your high school friends? I’m worried that the 4 semesters will make it impossible for me to see my friends at home (however, apparently everyone seems to want to stay at college anyway instead of come home). On a scale of 1-10, 10 being the hardest, how would you rate the 10 week semesters? Also, Drexel is my top pick, but im applying to the competitive 6 year accelerated pt program: what are my chances of being accepted to the program and do you think I could recieve any scholarship money? I have a 4.35 w gpa, 3.8 UW, 8 APs and the rest are honors, 1910 SAT, NHS, a lot of ec and leadership(Key club vp, 4 year varsity swimmer and captain), and 400 hours community service, 100 of which are pt related. Do you know anyone in the pt program?

People you shouldn’t ask about high school friends → This guy. I didn’t really care about the people I met in high school, but WITH THAT BEING SAID. It is not impossible to come home. I don’t know where you’re coming from, but I’m from a small suburb right outside of DC and I make it home between every 3-7 weeks depending on my course load/activities/ROTC/pep band. Cool things about Drexel - you do not have be in school all year round. But even when you are, most of your friends will be at DU. I know that’s hard to hear, especially as you’re trying to soak up as much time with your besties before college, but I promise you that you will make friendships with so many people in college that you’ll WANT to be at Drexel all four terms. Regardless. You can go home. And you can see your friends. And if you co-op near your home (which is possible even if you’re not in the tri-state area) you can still get that social time in.

Ten-week terms. My friends and I, and some other people on campus call it, affectionately, “the ten-week tussle”. It’s tough. I take a twenty credit courseload pretty much every term so by the times finals roll around I am absolutely and totally spent. That also being said, I love the ten week terms because I get to take three different sets of classes a year! I never get bored with the material! Numerically, I’d rate terms at about a 7.5 or 8 for me - depending on the classes, and extra curricular obligations. Ultimately though, the level of difficulty of your term will be mostly on you. And I hate to sound like a parent/teacher/annoying individual, but that’s where time management comes in to play. It is impossible, and I mean impossible (unless you take 16 credits in LeBow) to be successful at DU without managing your time appropriately. There’s just too much. Do not, however, let that deter you. It is an absolutely worthwhile experience and I enjoy putting in a lot of work in my classes because I get a lot out of it.

I’d say you’re on track to get a hefty (dean’s/presidential) scholarship from DU. But don’t take my word for it. As I’ve said before, I don’t work for admissions, or SRC so take what I have to say with a grain of salt. You are highly competitive, however. PT…I assume you mean like, kinesiology. In which case I don’t know that I can help you there as I don’t know anyone studying it.

Shameless plug: Drexel has a pretty active Circle K group - I did Key club in high school. So if you’re coming, be sure to look into that! Best of luck! Feel free to send me a message on here if you have any more questions!

How do athletes train and compete during their co-op? Do you stay in the same dorm for the year during your co-op?
