Hey Psych MAJORS! Psych 101..Spring or Summer?

I have heard from a peer advisor that Psych 101 is alot better during the summer with shiota compared to spring with wickens teaching...

but do others that have taken it either spring (with wickens) or summer (with shiota) feel this way too? reviews for wickens are polar opposites on ratemyprof and people either seem to love him or despise him so i dont WANT to take it over summer b/c of summer tuition costs but will consider it if its really worth it i guess....

also, which decade(s) did you enjoy taking? i plan to take psych 101, a decade, two electives (or even two decades for elective credit or one decade + one elective) and PH 150A. Does this look manageable? any tips/suggestions???

THANK YOUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU <3

ermmm…I don’t want to post this here, but I’ll send you my reason for why I think you should take it during the summer if you can… :/.

For electives… I recommend Psych 122 (Learning and Memory) - very interesting material and great prof, Psych 117 (human neuorpsychology) definitely was fascinating - taught by a neurologist, so you cover all diff kinds of pathology and clinical symptoms.

I don’t know about what decades might be better, the more popular profs aren’t teaching next semester I guess.

thanks snoangel! 117 and 122 sound great but both are offered now and not in spring :(

and yeah i hear ya about none of the popular profs teaching next sem. im thinking 130 and 140 look pretty cool tho for dcades in spring. ill probably try to squeeze in 110 (bio) and 120 (clinical) in fall i guess…

did u pm me yet about the summer for 101, btw-i didnt get a notification?

oh lol-just got it. nvm!!!

Actually check the schedule again for Spring 2011 - psych 117 and psych 122 are taught in the spring (not fall)…

oh oops, yeah youre right, lol i was looking at the wrong column. and ive heard good things about both shimamura and knight…hmmmm

Yeah Shimamura and Knight are both really amazing… especially if you’re into neuroscience (which I really am…). Knight is pretty fast-paced, but the lecture material is really fascinating so it’ll keep you on edge. Shimamura has a very relaxed and cool nature, so his lectures are also always very interesting.

is shimamura hard?

what about keltner? I hear a lot of different stuff about him, most is bad but the good say that he’s really good

or whiteny, or a seminar, or mendoza-denton?

shimamura is supposed to be really mellow. ive personally only heard good stuff about Keltner. he has ok ratings on RMP-are you thinking of taking him for Human Emotion?

yup yup

(in the butt)

Keltner’s emotion class is good, relatively easy and interesting. I think the main reason ppl have a problem with him, is that he sometimes comes out some-what fake… lol. I dunno… his expressions or voice seem exaggerated I guess.

But the material itself is interesting, so it shouldn’t be a problem. Get to think about how you can read others’ emotions, and the reading isn’t bad. I’d suggest that one too.

how about mendoza-denton? ever had or heard anything about him?

If Shiota is teaching 101 in the summer, DO IT. I took 101 over the summer with her and it was intense, but she was a great professor. I ended up getting an A. I was surprised how much I was able to learn and retain in those 8 weeks.
