I just wanted to clear this up: do you take AP scores into consideration?
How much does it affect the objective portion of the application? Do you use AP scores other than for college placement? Maybe as a way to gauge the inflation/deflation/consistency of an applicants school system?

I think they’re the same as the SAT Writing scores. They look at them - it’s not like they can “unsee” them when looking at your application. All parts of your application are “considered” since the admissions offers are human.

But even so, why does it matter? Just get the highest scores you can on your exams. That’s all you can do.

Hey So REDIVORYS -

I mean, we see them, and in that sense we consider them. But I rarely note a student’s AP scores in my evaluation. When I do, it’s because:

they scored lower on their AP than their grade in the class would suggest

they scored higher on the AP than their grade in the class would suggest

they have an insane number of 5s (think: at least 10)

etc

At which point I’ll note it. But MStocksl is correct - really, just get the highest scores you can, don’t stress out about stuff that’s beyond your control.

Hey Chris, you often mention that you “make note” of something in an application. What does that exactly mean? Are you the “first time reader”, taking notes on an application which is then passed on, or do you mean a mental note as in “oh, that’s impressive” but not written down.

MITChris - What do you think about AP scores that one has gotten from AP exams after self-studying (no course) in junior year? To be more specific, 5s in AP Calc BC and both the AP Physics C subjects.

The former.

Those are good things.

MITChris I didnt take any AP or IB courses in my school because my school didnt offer those. Will be a disadvantage in my application?

Thank you
