Hi I am a Sophomore and would like to discuss my future.

Hi, I am interested in learning what are my current chances for mid tier CS colleges. Not the top 10 I won’t get in there for sure. But I think I may have changes at schools like NYU or Perdue. Here are my current GPA Standings

Weighted : 3.8421 Unweighted: 3.6316

Granted I try to improve my Gpa by a point or 2 what are my chances ( I plan to study well and take both the ACT and SAT and score 1300+ and 33+ on SAT, ACT)

My grades are a mix of A’s and B’s so what chances do I have?

*purdue. also you haven’t taken the ACT yet so you can’t “plan” to get a score.

Purdue is pretty much a reach for CS for everyone. Although the university’s overall admit rate is high, this is one of those schools (along with UIUC) that have much lower acceptance rates for STEM majors. It fools a lot of students on these boards into thinking it’s a match. However, IT at Purdue is a different department and is a little easier to get into (if you’re open to that), but keep in mind it is not so easy to switch majors over different departments once you’re in.

Illinois Institute of Technology is possibly a match or a likely.

You’re ahead of yourself, however. You have time to improve your GPA. Without test scores, it’s still too early to chance you. Work on getting that GPA up to 3.8 UW and you’ll be on the right track, though.

@Groundwork2022 What about University of Minnesota would that be a reach?

I think the University of Minnesota would be a match. They weigh test scores and GPA more heavily than other factors, and your GPA is in the higher percentiles. Are you in-state? That might help because only 12% or so of their students come from OOS. I like that they have rolling admissions. You could apply early and have that acceptance in hand while you try for Purdue and NYU.

Keep Purdue on your list. You have time to get your GPA into that 3.8 UW range.

When the time comes, consider Rensselaer and Case Western if your scores are good. You’ve got a lot of time ahead. It’s very hard to chance when you’re still a sophomore. It never hurts to do the research early. High school doesn’t get any lighter in the homework as you move up. I applaud you for planning ahead.

Cost could play a role, too. Purdue and UMN are public universities—so if you aren’t from those states, you probably would pay out of state tuition.

Too early to tell. Just do your best to improve stats my dude.
