Hi, I'm currently in a dilemma between UCSD and Stony Brook University.

I am a biology major, and I previously attended a community college at California.
I got accepted to Stony Brook University, but I do know of the TAG and IGETC program between UCSD and the CA community colleges.

Which has a better biology undergrad and does what school you come out from for undergrad really matter?

The downside of UCSD is that, I would have to fulfill some requirements that would take some time. I have finished most of the IGETC requirements and all I will be requiring is the sciences that the university requires. However, the community colleges in CA (especially the one I am attending and the community colleges that surrounds it) is full and it will be even lucky to get into the science classes because they are always most of the time closed/waitlisted. So it would actually take more time for me to fulfill all the requirements..

Stony brook, on the other hand, I have heard that this university is known for their sciences and it is in New York where all my friends state that there are more opportunities here in NY compared to CA.

Which is a better choice? UCSD or Stony? And does anyone know if one school has a higher rate of graduating and their grad school exam scores? Thank you.

Please can I get some feedback @_@

Unfortunately UCSD’s programs trump stony’s. I actually did something similar I transferred to Rutgers in NJ from a CCC. I’ve heard from a lot that if you are planning to go to grad school it won’t really matter just wherever is easier. The price is roughly the same for the two schools. I personally hate California and intended to live on the east coast coast for my career days so I decided to just transfer and get to know some of the professionals on the east coast to ease the transition. If you plan on doing medical school or grad school I’d say if you love ny and you will do better there (UCSD is really hard a couple of my friends go there). PM if you wanna chat I was in your same boat pretty much.

Knowing both of the schools relatively well, I’d say their programs are pretty comparable. Stony Brook is more known for the sciences though. Either school is a good choice.

So basically, if I want to head to a grad school, it would be better off going to an easier school? WHich in this case, I’m guessing it’s Stony?

You should look at it from a different angle when comparing peer schools.

Stony Brook is on Long Island, environment wise, LI is vastly different from SD. As a Californian, you may or may not be able to adjust to it. People wise, SB is in cut throat NY while SD is more laid back CA.

OTOH, You may not be able to grduate in two years at UCSD because the makeup classes you have to take and due to the budget cut, you make not be able to get in all the classes you want.

Acadamically, I’d say it is a toss off. Go visit and decide.

If it matters, Stony Brook has a high percentage of Asian students, per collegeboard.com

I am aware of the classes that I have to take and it’s availability because of the budget cuts… which is actually the reason that is holding me back from SD.

So it would all come to, which school has a more appealing environment to me?
Are the schools that similar in terms of academics and etc?
For instance, 3.0 from SD or SB, which would a grad school pick over?

I have visited both schools and I prefer SD because of the nice weather and the location the university is in. But if the schools are that much similar, might as well head to SB because of the tuition…

It’d be great if I got more feedback! Thank you :d
