all right folks im still torn on appealing. spring semester is coming to a close and my semester GPA will probably be hovering a little over 3.2-3.3 with the 20+ units. my cumulative GPA will be 3.6 when taking into account my last semester. so bye bye 3.8.

I have to go hunt for my high school transcript which could take a few days.

UC reps keep telling different stories. I was under the impression appeals wouldn’t be processed till July-August but now I hear people are getting their appeals accepted already. how many spaces are actually available? UC says it isn’t first come first serve but then they also said math/english could be IP for spring.

I guess I’m more interested in my chances since I have no reason not to appeal.

does anyone have an idea how many spaces are available for waitlisted/appealing applicants? i believe ~6,000 were admitted for fall and ~1,500 enrolled? does UCSB anticipate a certain yield of enrollment and base their spaces according to that math? there can’t be 4500 spaces available…

I was quite upset. I am surprised how quickly they processed and approved my appeal. I wonder what the acceptance rate was and how many applicants there were…

Congrats! It’s always exciting to see an appeal get in.

I honestly think that you deserved a chance, because 3.8 is a competitive GPA, and your health issues definitely added to your personal story (holistic review, etc. etc.).

May I ask you what your ethnicity is and what EC’s you did?

ethnicity? lol, uhh…mostly white I would say. I assumed UCSB can’t admit people based on ethnicity anyways. i didn’t have a lot of ECs during CC, most of the ECs i listed were from HS. Not sure if they considered that in the appeal process.

now i’m trying to find a place to live. UCSB housing deadline is closed and they don’t have any places available. if anyone has recommendations feel free to PM me. i’ve ruled out icon (too expensive) and bartlein (horrible reviews.)

I’m surprised UCSB didn’t take you the first time around. Again, your GPA is extremely competitive, especially for UCSB. However, I can definitely see the lack of EC’s hurting you, which could potentially be the reason for your rejection the first-time around.

OFA said I wasn’t admitted because I didn’t finish my math/english. I completed the classes during the spring, certified IGETC, and then they accept my appeal. From what I gather, and this is just the frequent discussions with admissions representatives, UCSB puts more weight on GPA for transfers than everything else.

@blapblap: Welcome to the wonderful world of college admissions. It’s a crapshoot. You can’t gauge what the admin committee is looking for when they are building a new class. When I applied back in 2007, I was accepted to UCLA, UCB, Davis, UCSC and a number of privates back east, but not UCSB (although that didn’t stop them from sending me an erroneous acceptance email, along with everyone on their application list). Go figure.

One of the main reasons that people with high GPA’s get denied is because all they do is school and don’t work or are not involed in anything. This is not true in all cases, but tends to hold true for the majority of them.
