Sorry to totally hijack this forum but I'm really upset here. I was rejected in the first batch at UCSB. Anyways, I really feel like I am a qualified applicant, and I see a lot of posters with lower stats getting accepted into the same major which begs the question...why?

All I get is:

"Your application for admission to UC Santa Barbara for Fall 2012 has been carefully considered. We regret that we are not able to offer you admission at this time. Admission for Fall 2012 was very competitive and we were unable to accept many qualified applicants."

Can I call and ask for clarification? Could they have made a mistake calculating my GPA? I had a ~3.8 but some F's for non-transferable courses. Could that have accidentally mixed in with my other UC classes?

Are you sure the classes weren’t transferable? You saw a counselor about them and everything? That’s the only treason I could think of…Did you attend a four year prior to cc?

Yes they weren’t transferable. It was a lower-level math class but the # was the same as a higher-level math class. Another was a writing class that was not UC transferable. Counselor confirmed this. No I did not attend a four year. I’m a California resident, low income, high GPA, non-impacted major…seriously??? ? I had all A’s Fall quarter too!

Some poster said to call. Who the eff do I call?

If comfortable, i suggest you post your major and all classes and grades entered into UCAPPLY. Then, we can see if you had accidentally mis-entered something. OR if you had not fulfilled required/recommended courses

UCSB really takes the English and Math requirement extremely seriously. I know someone that was rejected for missing the second semester of English last year at UCSB, despite a 3.7 GPA. She ended up getting into UCI and UCD, but UCSB automatically rejected her.

I think that’s something you probably overlooked. Everyone seems to talk about pre-reqs and GPA, but the Math and English requirement are even more important in that they are necessary to even be eligible to transfer to any UC, even Merced. The UCs typically like to see that completed early and don’t like to have to speculate on whether or not you’ll be eligible if they happen to accept you. Also I think it hurt you even more that you used an AP course to satisfy your English requirement. From the UCs perspective, they basically had no academic history to see how you performed in college-level English and Math classes, so of course that raised some concerns.

In hindsight, if you spent last semester doing your major pre-reqs, I think it would’ve behooved you to have taken your Math and English requirements then and finished up whatever pre-reqs you had this Spring.

edit:
If you want to know why you were rejected. Call UCSB admissions at (805) 893-2881 and ask to speak to an admissions officer about why you were rejected. They’ll pull up your application and be able to answer any questions that you have directly. Also as far as planning out courses to ensure you get accepted, you can always call admissions and they’ll help you out before you even apply.

well that would have been good to know BEFORE November. I would have applied to UCI and UCD. I just did what my counselor told me to do. I had to hold back on a lot of classes because of my math disability (spending 5 hours a day) and unfortunately none of my local colleges offer the pre-reqs for my major.

I can call now? They aren’t being assaulted with appeals and rejection complaints?

If I finish all my classes now 100%, then appeal by June, will they let me in?

^There’s no harm in trying now, although a receptionist might tell you to call back in a few weeks if they’re too busy going over applications. I edited my previous post and included the phone number to admissions.

An appeal is unlikely. Usually you have to file your appeal in May and provide some type of new unprecedented information that wasn’t apparent when you filled out your application. You would’ve had a better chance of an appeal if you had taken winter courses and the grades had just become available or if you forgot to list previous courses that fulfilled requirements that they were unaware of. Typically by June the appeal deadline has passed and there’s nothing you can do.

my spring semester ends on the week of May 20th, the appeal process ends on June 15th. I’ll have all my grades back by then. Will they consider my new grades? If I pass all the classes I am currently enrolled in will they consider that and admit me?! UCSB is not Cal. I just don’t understand. My major was totally non-impacted. I just feel so upset right now, honestly. I have no place to go to for Fall. I’m just screwed.

Did you explicitly state that UCSB is your first and only choice in your personal statements? I don’t how likely this is, but maybe they thought you were overqualified and would probably be going to another school. This might be something to discuss in your appeal.
