I am looking into High Point University, as an Interior Design major. Can anyone tell me, current or past students and/or their parents, if High Point University takes advantage of the incredible furniture industry, in regards to their interior design program? I have heard some pretty good things about the HP program, I am just looking for some personal insight. I dont graduate HS for another year.

I have some friends who were interior design majors at HPU and from what I understand, the students work very closely with the furniture market, often participating in internships. I wish I could be of more help. Sorry and good luck to you!

Yes they do! The furniture market comes to town twice a year and all the interior design majors go work there to get experience. The companies are always here though, so even when market is gone, the students can get internships and work with real designers. HPU’s back yard is literally furniture companies so the students take advantage of it all the time. One of my friends just finished an awesome internship with a big name designer (wish I could remember his name…) but it was an awesome experience for her.

About a year ago, DesignIntelligence journal ranked the program top 10 in the country, so its very competitive. When you come visit (or come back for a visit), ask to talk with one of the Int.D professors. Professors love to talk with passionate students, and based on your posts, you seem pretty excited about HPU!

Hi orangecountykid,

My daughter graduated from HPU and is now working with a major fabric design company. She interned there for a summer thanks to a connection she made while working at the market. HPU’s program is highly respected within the industry and the proximity to the home furnishings industry makes this a no-brainer. You should come and visit and definitely make time to speak with the professors. It will really help a lot in your decision.

Good luck to you!

The High Point Furniture market works great with the University Programs for Interior Design and International Home Furnishings, but are not limited to those programs. I know many business majors that also work closely with the Market and help project sales. Many students that have internships with the Market have them for there remaining time here at High Point University, which is a great experience to have!
