High Point University - Surrounding Area, Safety, Crime

Undoubtedly, the High Point University campus is pristine and picturesque. I have, however, seen several posts that have raised unanswered questions about the surrounding area and general safety concerns. Yes, I know that all urban areas have crime and you need to take reasonable precautions, etc., etc. I also know there is a big difference between Appleton, Wisconsin (Lawrence) and the South Side of Chicago (U of Chicago) in terms of statistical crime rates and the ability to take a walk off campus at night, regardless of how cautious one is.

Is crime, particularly violent crime, a concern in the area surrounding HPU? Can one walk freely off the campus? Has crime ever spilled on to campus? Have students been the victims of violent crimes on or off campus?

I ask this question as one who is uninformed with no predisposition in asking the question. Just trying to get a handle on general safety issues associated with attending this university.

Here is 2003 data about High Point crime: [High Point Crime Statistics (NC) - CityRating.com/url

And here is data (unknown year) about on-campus crime: [url=<a href=“College Navigator - Search Results”>College Navigator - High Point University]College Navigator - High Point University](<a href=“High Point Crime Statistics: North Carolina (NC) - CityRating.com”>High Point Crime Statistics: North Carolina (NC) - CityRating.com)

If you call the High Point police dept. They will send you info by area around the school. In fact every small town police dept I contacted when daughter was looking at colleges emailed stats/ maps/etc. It is important though that most of info I received was based on number of calls that police responded to for a year.
