High School Class of 2013

You should probably make one so if people want to they can posts their decisions and whatnot :)

Brown and gerogetown have pages for 2017 already

And that’s junior year…wow.

Anyone else want to apply to a school ED just so they can get the whole process over with in like December? It’s temping.

Yep, I want to get it over with so I’m applying early action to UM

Why not do early decision? Can’t take the pressure of a binding contract? :stuck_out_tongue: Nah but I’ve heard ED gives you a much better chance to semi-selective colleges. That’s why I’m debating doing it to my #1 or #2 choice. I’m assuming UM is University of Miami?

I still have tests on Monday and Wednesday.

I dont want to do ED in case they don’t give me enough money! With EA I can at least see how much I’ll get and see if its manageable. So no i can’t take the pressure lol Seeing a bill for over $104,000+ is not my cup of tea.

Yes, University of Miami

So my final schedule looks like:

Gym
AP Biology
Advisory
Japanese 4
AP Calculus AB
Journalism
AP Comparative Government
Economics

On Tuesdays and Thursdays: American Foreign Policy at the local college. At first I was upset because I get out at 3 and the class starts at 4:40, but I have a club on Thursdays until 4 so that’ll work out nicely and Tuesdays… I might have another club, hopefully.

You already have finalized schedules? Lucky, I won’t know until about a week before school during regitration

Well those are the classes I signed up for. And since there’s no one in my school, every class is only offered one period. And I sat with my principal and guidance counselor and we conceptualized scheduling for a while.

Haha, we got bumped to the 4th page.

So, what are things that you guys make sure to do/ask when you go on a college visit?

/strolls in

Well, when my family goes on a college visit…my dad makes a beeline for security, and my mom goes straight for the food/dorms. I always make sure to do my research so I don’t ask stupid questions like “Do you have X major?” Avoid questions like that, it makes you look sloppy.

Good things to ask would be like; “What % of freshman classes are under X students?” "What percentage of students end up in forced triple dorms?

We also like to ask about meal options (where you can eat, when, what other options are there since i’m extremely picky), hit the financial aid desk and get all the information there, even though it’s the same thing, and spend at least 30 minutes talking to campus police to get an idea of what the crime is like and any other safety concerns/services are offered.

So basically, we go knowing most of the spiel, but ask about little things that aren’t mentioned, that aren’t stupid and whiny.

I met with the admissions officer and the head of the East Asian Studies department, in addition to the campus tour and information session. I just chatted with the two people about the school.

Ask really specific questions that can’t be found on the website; make sure that you do your research. The evening before each visit, I would spend a good hour or more just (re)learning everything I could.

Also, if you know you only want to major in 1 thing, ask if there are tours/you can visit a classroom and talk to the dean or professors. I visited UMD and they had a tour of the nursing labs and it was awesome. We talked to the assistant dean and she was very honest and up-front regarding admissions and requirements, and then we had a student tour of the labs. The students were also honest, but it was clear that they really loved the program and had nothing but good things to say about it. We also happened to walk in on a studying session in a lab room so it was cool to see some girls practicing for a final.

Also, take some time to walk around by yourself after the guided spiel. I wished my brother hadn’t been a pain, otherwise we would’ve wandered the campus. But we did drive all the way around it and got a feel for what people were up to.

Alright, I’m not gonna provide too much information but would love some feedback.

By the end of senior year, I will have taken 8 AP’s:
AP World (5)
AP US (Probably 5)
AP Euro
AP Calc BC
AP Spanish
AP English 12
AP Statistics (Probably 4/5)
AP Biology (Probably 5)

I received an SAT score of 2360. I essentially have a 4.0 GPA, more like 3.95 probably.
A few clubs, however no real leadership position.

In terms of community service, I don’t have much. However, I will most likely be doing some sort of cancer research this summer and will be helping at a senior center. In addition, I do have kind of have a reason for my lack of volunteer work, besides my time is dedicated to something else.

Assuming at the least decent recommendations and decent essays, what colleges do you guys think I should be looking at?

Seriously?

Also, chance forum is thattaway.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ up up up & away.

I hope you all don’t catch senioritis next year.

They’re good at suggesting colleges.

@Elleya

How was UMD? I’m going down to visit in a couple weeks.

@yankees: I liked it! I’m sure you’ve heard that it’s a “concrete fortress”, but even though I went on a cold and rainy Saturday, I didn’t really feel very intimidated by it. I think the architecture is funky and unique, actually.

…err, anyways.

The food was pretty good, the admissions people kinda prattled on but had a lot of useful information. The tours are the best part, so if you can, go on a tour of your interested major. Freshman dorms really suck, but that was probably the worst thing we saw, and it’s not a deal-breaker because freshman dorms are supposed to suck. We didn’t make it to the financial aid meeting, but they had a table that had a sample FAFSA and other Financial Aid 101 (something you probably know by now if you’re on CC).

We also didn’t make it to the Corsair Shop, which was depressing. I wanted a sweatshirt.

I can’t speak for many of the people, but the students I met were friendly. We were on a student-guided tour of the nursing labs at UMD and they were very knowledgeable.

…I actually just posted about this up above. :P

Also, the town of North Dartmouth is nice. It’s not far from the campus (1~2mi?), and they have a shuttle. They have just about every store I can think of in the mall area that you would ever want. Lots of parking as well if you want a car, but i’ve heard the spots are expensive.

From the pictures I’ve seen, it looks really nice. It has a good combination of the traditional “campus feel” and modern buildings/architecture.

As of now I’m just doing the information session and regular campus tour, but if they have a tour of my major too I’ll definitely do that. And yeah, I’ve yet to see a school with nice freshman dorms so that’s not really a big deal. I’m worried that because I’m going during the summer it will be much different from during the school year, less kids, no sports going on, etc. One of the things that attracted me was that UMD always seemed to have lots of school spirit, and I probably won’t see that when I visit.

I really like how close it is to Washington. I think it’s like 30 minutes or something? But it’s good that there’s a nice town nearby with stores and stuff. Was the town mostly college kids from the school? Or was it just a normal town? I’m assuming it’s a pretty residential campus and most kids don’t commute, which I really like. But I guess these are the questions I need to ask when I visit.

Anyways, I’m glad you liked it. I gotta start preparing more questions for them haha.
