I’m wondering if I should do Academic Team for 9th Grade. I might actually get Varsity cause only like 3 other 8th graders did it with me last year (+ 6 7th graders) and then the other feeder school didn’t have an Academic Team. It was fun (when I didnt have to take things into my own hands {yikes}, and we did okay (7-9 record) and I know a member or two. I’m just weighing the pros & cons.

Lol, I re-read that post and it sounded stupid. I think I’ll try out for the team again

Yeah, you should! I might do Academic Decathlon but I’m not really sure yet. It’s a pretty big commitment. I think I’d have to take a seventh hour to do it.

what’s a seventh hour?

It’s like an extra class period if you need to fit more classes into your schedule. It meets once a week for four hours. We also have zero hour which serves the same purpose except it meets every day for an hour before school.

ugh, I wish my school had that!!!

Yeah, it’s pretty cool. I’m probably going to take advantage of it over the next few years. The marching band kids take seventh hours.

How long is your school year? Ours shrunk to 175 this year

We have exactly 180 days.

Is that legal?
and I think mine is 180

Mhmm, it has something to do with budget cuts, and they might have been adjusted for winter closings

Is winter closing like winter break?

No. For recent years we’ve had school day closings due to bad weather. And then occasionally we are told to make up those days during winter break

I checked. It’s 177 days, and then the hours are changing a bit

Oh, that makes sense. It never snows where I live so I’ve never experienced a school day closing.

It shouldn’t snow where I live…but the weather’s been messed up recently

Oh yeah, I remember hearing about severe weather in Atlanta in winter 2011.

Lol. So they ended up opening school over “Winter Beeak” (February) but saying it wasn’t mandatory to go. The school was 1/2 full. And a lot of the teacher’s didn’t show up

Well some* not a lot.
They said “If you made plans for the break. You don’t have to come”

You have winter break in February?!
