High school class of 2016

Did we? I didn’t see anything about that. Unless you’re talking about the Peachtree City thing.

Yeah. Cause i said id probably end up playing her school in Academic Bowl

Oh, gotcha.

@Swinter I go to an Independent girls’ school - gets some government funding but has certain autonomy in running the school. It’s cheaper than the International/religious private schools around, though still far more expensive than the normal public school - but everybody’s on some form of government merit scholarship so we end up paying around the public price. The school’s also really selective - here everybody sits national exams after Grade 6 (and also the O levels and A levels) - so I guess it’s somewhat like a selective/gifted public school? It’s weird.

Currently we’re having a week-long term break, and after the break we go back to school to face our final projects, batch of tests, and then our 2 weeks+ of End-of-Years. And then we get our end-year break and finally go into Grade 9 next January.

A levels? You don’t go to school in the US, do you?

Nope, I don’t. I was there when I was really young though, but now I live in Asia.

That sounds really cool. Are you an American citizen? Or are you a citizen of a different country?

I’m an American citizen, but I’m Chinese, and live in another Asian country that’s not China (but everybody I meet who’s not in Asia thinks the country is in China haha)

The country I live in is multiracial, and it’s compulsory for us to learn our ‘mother tongue’ starting Kindergarten all the way till A levels. And most in my school opt to pick up a Foreign (usually European, but you can take another Asian one) starting 7th Grade.

… It’s really different here, and my explanations sound so complicated xD

Do you guys learn a foreign language? How hard is it to pick one up if you start taking it only in High School?

I’m taking French right now. I don’t think it’s too hard (probably because I speak another language already) but come back in a few months, haha. So far I know the alphabet, numbers up to 100, greetings, asking people’s name, age, etc. I’m learning how to conjugate verbs right now.

That’s so cool that you live in a different country! Is your dad like a diplomat or something?

I think taking French is so cool! I didn’t take a 3rd foreign language because I’m not really good at languages - I’m only average to above-average in my Chinese class. Also, in our school system from 4th Grade to 7th Grade all Chinese kids have to take conversational Malay and vice versa (those taking other 2nd langs have a choice). Anyway, I was completely horrible at that class and I’ve forgotten tons of what I’ve learnt from that class even though it’s only been a year since I’ve last taken it. And because I’ve not been that great at past attempts in learning foreign languages I decided not to do a European lang in Grade 7 - but that makes other languages that I’ve not tried before look all the more attractive!:stuck_out_tongue: I wish I had the determination to take French for my 3rd language haha but in retrospect I think I would’ve dropped out - my friends in 3rd language have a 3-hour straight block of extra classes every week, and tons of extra homework and projects ><

Anyway so French is your 3rd language? What other language do you speak?:P

Nope, I come from a really normal family haha. It’s just that my parents both happened to find pretty good jobs here so we settled here:P

I speak Vietnamese. I think it’s pretty cool to learn French because Vietnam was a colony of France for a long time and I’m always finding all these Vietnamese words influenced by French.

Oh, that’s still pretty cool. So do you live in Malaysia?

Haha that’s cool! I find languages like these very exotic  Are you Vietnamese?

And nope, I don’t live in Malaysia but I do live in the region. And it’s also a former British-colony. And the language we speak on the streets here is in a way influenced by English - it’s a combination of Chinese, as well as Hokkien/Cantonese dialects, plus a mix of Malay, and some English here and there. So I guess you could say we are very … multilingual? xD I’m kind of giving away the country I’m from haha:P

Hi ! I am Viet ,too
It is just great to know '16ers on CC . My school starts on Sep 5th .New school , new friend…I feel worried. My schedule for this year :

@BurningIce yeah I am Vietnamese. So you’re from Singapore? That was my first guess, I just said Malaysia 'cause you mentioned something about Chinese kids learning Malay.

@IMTB98 Welcome to the thread! You’re the first Vietnamese 16er I’ve met on here. You know what that means, right? That means we’re automatically best friends now. Nice schedule, by the way. What’s C.D. Science?

@IMTB98 Hey fellow 16er! (And fellow Asian too!) :D

@Swinter Yup I’m from Singapore:P But our official languages are English, Chinese, Malay and Tamil with the first three being the most common, so our schools encourage us to learn all of three:P

:) It is Coordinated Science .My school requires students to take 2 years of Coordinated Science (1&2)

Sounds cool. So does Coordinated Science include a little of everything?

:) thank for the warm welcome…Are you guys interested in joining in any club at your school ?

@Swinter I think so. I think it is about analyzing problems , lab , …

@IMTB98 Yeah, I’ve been in school since July 23 so I’ve already joined a couple of clubs. Debate, school newspaper, key club, and theater (sorta. my friend is in it and she’s dragging me along).
