High school class of 2016

@IMTB98 We’ve got compulsory basic courses in Physics, Chemistry and Biology in Grades 7-8, and also one called Integrated Science. It’s got a couple of modules - one where you read scientific literature and design your own project and write an 8 page report, another called CSI , and another one where you do ‘creative problem solving’ (e.g. building a super strong bridge using a certain type of material), and you also learn analysis (like graphs, and lab skills), etc. Something like that? It’s really fun! :D

On the clubs side, because I go to a Grades 7-10 school I’ve pretty much already fixed the extracurriculars that I’m going to participate actively in. I’m in Math club, Current Affairs club, World Scholars’ Cup, Model United Nations, School Newsletter, Student Congress / Student Leader, and I play the piano, tutor underprivileged kids, and also do ad-hoc volunteer stuff (like fundraisers!) with my friends.

The thing here is that our school limits the number of core (more serious/time-consuming) extracurriculars we can take. All these are selective, and competitive (i.e. you can’t train in a sport without being competitive, meaning winning national titles). Most people take 1 core, and you need to request to take 2. I used to take 3 (had to meet with our Director and everything), but I’ve since dropped the basketball team because my childhood asthma recurred. I really wish my school could open up more (non-competitive) sports teams that though. In the school I went to Grades 1-6, where the teams were less-selective/training less tough, I was in the swimming/basketball teams, and I do miss those, they were fun!:P

Next year, in 9th Grade, I’m hoping that I’ll get into this science research program with the local university, and may do an internship (or maybe in 10th Grade). I’ll also be concentrating more on my current ECs and get leadership positions / more awards / better participation / more fun! out of them.

I started taking French in seventh grade, and I’m finally starting level 2! It wasn’t that hard, because I also speak another language. It’s more like math, to me with the grammar, verbs, nouns and how you arrange them.

I think I’m going to get lost in my school tomorrow since it’s the first day of school!!!

You probably will get lost, but don’t worry, there will be people there to help. Usually the upperclassmen who worked the orientation will be wearing a shirt or something and you can ask them for help.

Hey gais ;D
I just had my first day of high school yesterday. It was… eh.

I go to a pretty challenging private all-girl’s Catholic school:
Algebra II Honors
Chemistry Honors (I was one of the 3 freshmen from my incoming class to enroll in this class. the science department was trying to conduct an experiment, and apparently i’m one of their guinea pigs XD Normally juniors/sophomores take this class.)
English 1 Honors
Latin 1 Honors
Global History (I was so angry that I was placed into the standard class. Originally I was supposed to be in Global History Honors, but since I got into Chem H there were complicated time conflicts… yeah.)
Theology 1 (no honors available for this class, and like I said I go to a Catholic school)
Physical Education (required)
Health (required)

No APs this year, just trying to relax  Next year I’m probably going to take AP Chem and/or AP Calc AB.

Other Stuff (I don’t feel like organizing my list…)

 • Chinese lessons, 10 years
 • Piano, 7 years, Flute, 4 years (I don’t play either instrument seriously though, I just show up to my lessons and practice for fun xD )
 • Peer Leader at this summer program… taught kids English and Mathematics for 3 hours (summer before freshmen year)
 • Merit Scholar for my school, basically you get a really good scholarship based on entrance exam scores (placed 99th percentile, top 1%)
 • Semifinalist for Broadcom MASTERS National Science Fair, 8th grade; 2nd place at state science fair (colleges don’t care about middle school awards, meh)

Clubs/stuff I plan on doing in high school:

 • My dad is helping me by pulling a few strings to get me a molecular biology mentor at his former employer Harvard Med, so research XD
 • Science competitions :stuck_out_tongue:
 • Maybe create an Environmental Club? It sounds fun, and I’m sure lots of people will be interested in it.
 • Volunteer at the science museum
 • Volunteer at hospital
 • Instrumental Ensemble, flute
 • Anime club… is anyone an anime nerd here?
 • Literary Magazine (we don’t have a newspaper) at my school. The admissions tried to recruit me after reading my essay but meh.
 • Intramural tennis, I’ve been playing tennis since 7th grade at a beginner’s level. But hey, it’s all fun right? XD
 • Bunch of other random clubs, see what I like first then narrow it down :stuck_out_tongue:
 • Self-study Japanese and Korean, if I have time  Ever since I was a kid I’ve been fascinated by both cultures.

Race: Asian
Gender: Female

Hi fellow 16ers!

I Googled “class of 16”, saw this website, and felt compelled to sign up. :)

Hi! Welcome to the thread, Catsby and fallenangel!

@fallenangel after I read your post I felt compelled to google “class of 16”

I felt the urge to do that too

Great minds think alike.

Welcome Catsby! :D

I joined Teen Court and Student Council today! I think I’m going to join Drama and Leo club too. (Leo is a leadership club. ) I’m really starting to feel like a high-schooler, haha.

What clubs/sports are you guys joining?

I’m on the golf team and I’m in marching band already. I’m hopefully going to join the academic team, model UN, and maybe mock trial. I’m also hoping to start the process of starting a club, even though it won’t be started until next year.

Hey! Welcome Catsby and fallenangel! Our thread’s alive again :D

Anyway how’s the workload/life in high school? We start 9th Grade in January here, and I’m pretty apprehensive. It’s known as the toughest year and tons of kids get <6 hours of sleep per night (which I’m not sure I can handle).

Also, speaking of schedules - We do the O levels at my school, and the courses you select now would be two-year courses, and you can’t take a course at the A levels that you haven’t already taken at the O levels. The schedule I’d like to take would involve English Lang, English Lit, Chinese, Math, Physics, Chemistry, History, Philosophy, Research Studies, Physical Ed. But I’m worried about not taking Biology at all from Grade 9-12. Really wish we followed a modular system and you get to take all the subjects and everything. And we don’t track either, but then again the school itself is pretty selective.

Hey guys, first day of freshman year was today. It really was not bad, I think I was more nervous entering 8th grade than 9th. Definitely not how its portrayed in the movies and tv. Wait what is mock trial?

First day of school on Friday! Well actually I’m just moving into my dormitory and getting acquainted. Even so. I need your luck.

Good luck, 00! I’m sure you’ll have an awesome time. :)

Hi , guys , today is my first day of school…It was great . Teachers are really nice and helpful…But one thing makes me upset and disappointed…I really love soccer and i want to try-out for it .Today , my new friend told me that she already made team (soccer) last week ( before school ).In my athletic form , i choose variety of sport ,but the only thing i really want to do is soccer. I am willing to do everything to get it . I am rather trying it out and being kicked out than doing nothing.
What do you guys think ? Try-out for soccer next year ? Is it important to be in the team when we are freshmen (the coaches may choose who is familiar with the teamates next year)

IMTB - Maybe you can talk to the coach about it?

I wish my school had Model UN. It seems so interesting!

My school has Model UN but it’s soo inactive. They didn’t even have a booth at club fair so I couldn’t sign up for it.

My school allows you to sign up for Model UN activities - but there’s no club for it! What usually goes on in a MUN club? Trainings for MUN?
