I’m a senior right now with lots of impressive academic background but at the same time there are so many things I wish I would’ve taken advantage of my freshman year

-JOIN CLUBS-

Mos importantly, don’t just join them, lead them… Be creative, start something new

-Take callenging classes & classes you really are interested in-

This is easily forgotten in highschool, but unless you are at a private/prep school, high school is the last time that you are receiving free education. TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THAT. Cannot stress it enough

-A - 's dont cut it-

As a freshman and middle schooler I just assumed A’s were As reguardless of the -/+ following it. You will soon realize how detrimental an A- can be to your GPA, strive not just for A’s but A+. i was content just staying “B free” freshman year, but you should really try to keep that GPA above a 4!

Good luck freshman! Enjoy highschool, it sounds cliche but it really does fly by. Don’t stress school too much that you don’t live those 4 years. It’s 4 years of youth yet maturity that you can’t get on any other level! :)

I regret trying so hard during the beginning in easy classes that didn’t require as much effort as I put in. Beside that, no regrets. I participated in a sport that I did well in. Did Beta Club and Student Council, it was a good school year but I’m glad it’s over because I hated being booed at the pep rallies by the upperclassmen.

@sg12909 The best way I can describe them is that it is a class for kids who are considered “Gifted and Talented” – meaning that the curriculum is taught faster and in a more in-depth manner. I suppose it functions the same way as a Honors course? PAP English I and the AP class are classes that anyone can sign up for, but for GT Global Studies you have to be considered “GT”. AP HG is the only AP class available as a freshman at my school.

I see. Does it adjust your GPA like Honors and APs do? Also, where are you located? My state (Nevada) doesn’t have them.

I am not sure that it adjusts your GPA – but it is coded as “GT” on transcripts. I live in Texas.

Wannabe valectorian here.

I really wanna be Val, just so I can give the speech at the end of the my high school career. But I’m really into swimming, and want to continue it throughot high school. (3, 2 hour sessions a week)

I also have a passionate love for music which seems to be diminishing. From what I’ve gathered it seems like Marching Band takes up lots of time the first quarter. Should I keep my hopes alive? O abandon them?

LOL, the class of 2017 doesn’t even post here…

When do you all get your schedules? We get ours during the freshman orientation which is in mid-August, I think.

I agree with most of the Class of 2016ers on here. You’ll find out that freshman are the ones that try the hardest in their classes…

@foodlover that seems like it would be expected. We will be going to a new school, a different environment, and will want to exceed.

^Good Luck.

You’ll get a better insight about life, become way ‘deeper’ than the kid you used to be and realize that you have infinite control over an infinite set of choices.

Also, advice:

Make friends with upper classmen. They will take you in as one of their own and make your freshman year awesome. If you are not crying at graduation, then you are doing it wrong!

NEVER PROCRASTINATE!!! I can’t tell you how important that will be!

Don’t be annoying or overly social. At my orientation, I was like that and it was not a smart idea. Don’t be dumb!

To go back to my previous point, make sure whatever you choose to do, you will ** never ** regret it. Ever.

Good luck…Freshies! [God, it felt good to say that at last!]

We get out schedules at our registration/schedule pickup on August 15th and then we have our “Fish Camp” on August 23rd with school starting the 26th.

Ask upperclassmen to make sure you are taking the highest possible classes @Delly98. Sometimes they might have loopholes that they’ll tell you about, such as taking Algebra II and Geometry at the same time, something I highly recommend you do

Im class of 2017, and im taking Debate and Journalism… hopefully I can manage that and all advanced classes. But everybody says don’t stress about college, but then again so many people say to plan because those four years go by fast. So many students at the high school connected to my old school said they had to go to community college because they didnt make good grades in freshmen year, and then have to transfer sophmore year to college they want.

^Read a lot of college books.

For example, A is for Admissions by Michele Hernandez should be a great introduction!

And does highschool really go by that fast?

Yes.

I was so stunned when my freshman year ended. I actually thought it had been 2 months, tops.

However, it depends on how much you like your school.
I know I hate my school’s intense workload, but love the other aspects

There aren’t any loopholes at my school – our requirements are structured in a way that is impossible for me to take double math classes. While the highest is certainly PAP Algebra II as a freshman, only 3 people from my school will be taking it next year. PAP Geometry is still considered “GT” or “accelerated”. And considering that I do not want to follow a STEM career I’m not too worried.

^You’d take Algebra II where you have an elective, so your Painting [or whatever elective you chose] class would become Algebra II. Taking the course usually lets you leapfrog into other, non STEM courses. It just shows the ability to do STEM courses. I did it, even though I am a SS guy, and it let me take college European History and Economics [both at college level].

Also, what is PAP? And I’m assuming GT is Gifted and Talented?

I think PAP is an equivalent to Honors classes. It stands for Pre-AP – I’m not exactly sure how it relates to Honors and what not PAP is the highest level offered in STEM courses until about senior year or junior … can’t remember off the top of my head. We don’t have Honors at my high school. And yes, GT is Gifted and Talented.
