High School Class of 2017

Be careful making friends with the upperclassmen. Most of them don’t like you. If you see them daily in a club, sport, or etc…go for it. Just approach the situation with precaution.

^Yeah, don’t go after them, let them come after you.

It helps if you have classes or EC’s with them

@oboe I’m a swimmer too  what’s your main stroke?

You guys give terrible advice.

Ahem.

Make friends with everyone, including the teachers.

Enjoy high school like I am.

Any questions?

What in the world is the class of 2017 doing here?!
-Class of 2015

My main group of friends were upperclassmen, which kind of sucked when they left.

More than half the people who post here aren’t class of '17… WHERE ARE MY '17ers?!

I plan to make friends with the upperclassmen who are in the clubs that I will join and in the sport that I’m involved with (volleyball). I won’t be one of those annoying freshman who try to befriend everyone I see!

There is no way to avoid that. It will happen no matter how hard you try, unless you are super introverted. Just be cool enough that they don’t care that you are so outgoing :D

I’m really excited for high school. But scared too . Im going to boarding school so ill know zero people there besides my mentor. :frowning: this thread has actually really helped my nerves…

Don’t be scared! You’ll make new friends :)

It’s gonna be kinda tough for me since I’m going from an online school to a public high where I don’t know anyone, but I’m still looking forwards to it.

Class of 2015. I have to say, I wish I knew about this site when I was in 8th grade, I think it’s so cool to have a thread like this to post in throughout your entire HS experience.

As for tips for going into high school, the #1 thing I think is to not slack off. I’d always heard that freshman year really doesn’t matter so I never studied or took extra credit opportunities and as a result I got 2 Bs that year, which put my class rank at 15ish out of 157. This year though I made straight As and I’m now at 7/157, but I really regret not taking freshman year seriously. It should be the year you have the easiest classes, so make sure to do your best so that your GPA is fine when jr or sr year you’re struggling just to keep a B or C in something.

Also, I wouldn’t put too much stress on yourself as far as class difficulty goes, but still do well in them obviously. I took the highest level courses offered to freshmen, which really I think was the perfect amount of work for a freshman. I’ve heard of freshmen taking multiple APs, which I think is crazy. My school doesn’t allow you to take APs until junior year and the only dual enrollment classes offered to underclassmen are precalc which you can’t take until 10th grade at the earliest and introduction to engineering and design which you can take 9th or 10th. I’m fortunate enough though, that because of the many dual enrollment classes my school offers to jrs/srs, I’ll be able to graduate HS with an associate’s degree and only have to pay for 2 or 3 classes max (assuming I get 4s or 5s on all the AP exams I will be taking)

This was my freshman year schedule:

1st semester
PE/Health 9
Spanish II
H Algebra II (This BTW is the 2nd best class I’ve ever taken, chemistry being the best, the teacher was awesome and challenged us the perfect amount and my classmates were just amazing. I’d do anything to get that sense of community in another class.)
H Earth Science

2nd semester
H English 9
Geometry (my school doesn’t offer H geometry, I would have taken though if they had because at least at my school geometry was painfully easy)
Spanish III
H World history and geography I

So yeah, most importantly though make sure to have fun. Get involved in as many school clubs as you can and just make a very diverse group of friends, you will not regret it. Freshman year is a time where the workload and homework is extremely doable so you should have tons of free time, take advantage of it while you can! Good luck!

Thanks^! I’m really going to try not to slack off. I don’t think I will, but you never know. Hopefully I can make it a great year!

I’m going into high school with all the people I went to middle school with, so I know everyone! I’m not nervous at all.

Next year I’m scheduled to take AP World History, AP Chemistry, and AP Chinese, as well as a bunch of Honors courses. I’m happy with my course load, but my parents want me to take a freshman English course at our state university (because I have high SAT and ACT scores). I’m 14 and don’t want to go to college just yet, but I’m open to taking an AP English course. What do you guys think?

Also, I live in one of the worst school districts and am going to go to a public high school (non magnet).

@Elaina I was dedicated the summer before freshman year, but I slacked off as always. I’m hoping with my online class this summer that it will help me not procrastinate, but as we speak I still have an essay due tonight that I haven’t started.

@sg that seems like a lot for a freshmen, even without the English course. Don’t let your parents have you do something you don’t want to do or aren’t ready for!

I would take an honors English course because it seems like a lot already, but if you think you can handle another ap class… Go ahead :)

@secoja8 I procrastinate with essays the most, but I really try not to. I have gotten better!

2013 is already half over… O.o

^ sad face. Yet another reason why I should get started on my summer homework…

Anyways, I just finished my freshman year, and if I have any advice for you guys it would to be get involved in as much stuff as possible. Your classes won’t be super hard, so you should try all the extracurriculars that appeal to you. By doing this, you can pick what you want to focus on for the rest of high school. Unless you already know what to do, in which case you should devote yourself to that. Just make sure that you don’t have so many EC’s that you’re overwhelmed, but not so few that you’re always bored and have nothing to do. Good luck you guys, and if you’re not part of the class of 2017 then just remember: freshmen are friends, not food.

@safeandsound that’s really great advice! Thank you.

I wish school would just start already… Summer is getting boring!

Hey rising Freshmen. Take this from another rising freshman (in college).
FRESHMAN YEAR COUNTS!
Many of us continue to make the mistake that Freshman year is all about “Omgaosh High School! I is gonna hang with seniors!” Just no.

Some Things I want to list:
1.) Do not even try to slack off. Freshman year lay the foundation of your high school career. I’m talking about GPA. You want a decent starting GPA of at least 3.0. Any lower and it will start to drag you down (I know well enough that if I performed better during Freshman/Sophomore years, I would had gotten into better school and gotten into the school I’m going to with ease.)
2.) This might be a little controversial but don’t make too many close friends.
3.) Don’t expect to keep friendship all four years. People… change. Everything shifts to fit what they want. You may no longer have your best friend from middle school. Nor will your new best friend stick with you all four years. Just not happening. I seen many students, former friends just walk past each other the hallway and no glance, no “hi”, nothing; Just treated like a random stranger (until maybe senior events and graduation).
—Also I can tell you now that since I graduated only a month ago, friendship just instantly dropped, mainly because I’ll never see them again (in person).
4.) Don’t like this site control you. What people do and how they do it on here is irrelevant. This site was made to help your entry into college, not submit you by giving you the impression of “I need 10 APs to get into one college!”. Just no. Do what YOU want as long as it is within reason.
5.) **Study at least 15 minutes for each classes a day instead of all night the night before. ** You will feel more prepare for a test if you divide your studying for several minutes a day rather than 4 hours the night before.
6.) Use the power of the Internet/Apps. Yes there may be facebook and twitter and the likes but there are studying potential out there. If you need to know how to do that hard Algebra problem just google it and look for all the steps. And then try it yourself (without the answer). Youtube can be very helpful for many subject.
7.) High school may be the worst 4 years of your life. By comparison College is the best four years. But just pull through and you’ll do find and have no regret.
8.) Have fun! And don’t forsake sleep.

I would post more but this was made hours ago.
