High School Class of 2018

@ak2018 okay. at my school sophomores take world history and pe/health.

Yeah @Phantomlink

@ak2018
In IED you learn about the engineering design process and you also learn how to make 3D digital models (usually in Inventor).
POE is an exploration of different types of engineering, it’s really different from IED because there is way less emphasis on the design process and more emphasis on the laws of physics and the mechanics of engineering. You learn about thermodynamics, simple machines (calculating mechanical advantage), circuits, and energy. (at least that’s what my class has covered so far. The concepts can be pretty confusing (more confusing than IED), but the labs (where you build simple machines and electrical systems) usually make the concepts way clearer.

@ak2018 In IED (Intro), in my class at least, we talked about product improvement, lots of different drawing types. Some projects we did were making a puzzle cube on the computer in Inventor and in person. We also made a train in Inventor based on some measurements. We took a toy car and made it on the computer. Those were the main things are it was a really great class! Also the college credit test it’s that hard if you pay attention in class. Good luck!

Thank you so much @IAmNotCreativ and @singingwriting ! Based on @IAmNotCreativ 's post, I leaning more towards taking POE. POE sounds like the kind of Engineering class I would want. I rather be learning about Engineering concepts rather than learning at a computer using Inventor. Don’t get me wrong IED sounds like a great class, but it just sounds like I would like POE better. Thanks again! Also @IAmNotCreativ , does IED include Engineering concepts like thermodynamics and other stuff like that?

@singingwriting Wait, you can get earn college credit for IED and POE? I honestly didn’t know that.

@ak2018 Most schools are certified to give college credit for PLTW classes. It costs like a hundred dollars to get a transcript from a local college. You’d have to ask for sure though.

Oh well that’s cool. Thanks @singingwriting Also does IED include Engineering concepts like thermodynamics and other stuff like that like @IAmNotCreativ said?

@ak2018
We’re currently learning thermodynamics in my class.

My Pre-Calc teacher keeps talking about college and preparing for college in class (since most of my class is seniors with a few juniors and me) and I’m just sitting in class like :-/ all the time.

@frazzledazzle Same with my pre-calc class! I am one of 2 sophomores in my hour.

@frazzledazzle Yeah my Pre Calc teacher likes to lay the pressure on us, even though the entire class but 1 is sophmores. He constantly talks about his crazy intelligent former students that were accepted at MIT, UChicago, Stanford, CalTech… That class makes me feel inadequate

@singingwriting I am the only sophomore and it makes me feel awkward.

@Madeline25 That’s rough. At P/T Conferences last week, I mentioned how I wanted to go to Caltech to my teacher. He suggested that I take AP Stats senior year, along with Calc BC. Now I’m questioning what classes I want to take in the future. I had everything planned perfectly, and he added an extra variable. eyyyyyyy

@Madeline25 If you think taking two math classes for you, do it. Caltech is a really hard school to get into and it might be best to take AP Stats as an elective to set yourself apart. Oh and I see what you did there! :))

@IAmNotCreativ Did you learn about that in IED?

Hi guys, I’m currently a sophomore, and scrolling through this thread, I came across a lot of your schedules and classes you guys are taking this year. I was wondering if anyone would be willing to tell me how rigorous my schedule is, and if you guys think it’s a schedule that would be decent enough for me to potentially get into an ivy or a top college.
Algebra 2 AB Honors
English 10 Honors
Chemistry Honors
Spanish 3 Honors
Geometry Honors
Global history 2 Honors
So compared to the classes a majority of you on here listed, mine seems almost too easy, since I haven’t taken any APs. For what it’s worth, I am a URM and I’m planning on taking 3 AP’s next year (Lang, Bio and APUSH), and a few more senior year.
Thoughts/suggestions?

@ak2018
You don’t learn thermodynamics in IED.
IED taught the methodology of engineering (how to keep an engineering notebook, how to draw sketches and dimension properly, how to model objects digitally (how to use Inventor), the engineering design process, and how to brainstorm.

@IAmNotCreativ Thanks. That doesn’t sound like the engineering class I would want, so I’ll take POE. I’ll however take IED later. Since my school allows this.

@ak2018
Glad I could help. >:D<

@ak2018 It’s actually me who said that. My math teacher suggested I take it, and I really want to. I might be able to take Astronomy at my local university next year (fingers-crossed), so I would be able to fit that in senior year. I like to make puns. :-??
