So I don’t know if it’s just me being especially grumpy, but tell me if any of you feel this way at all.
I get really irritated when the following occurs:
random person: oh, of coarse she go the highest score
2: gets A on test random person:Lucky
Random person: cough try hard
Right so there is no “of course” about getting good grades. You study and normally that’s it! Done! Grade achieved! Maybe there is less effort for some people in achieving that grade like in my case math, but I still have to try! There is also no luck involved! And yes of coarse I “try hard” in every class! Is that a Problem? The fact that I like having pride in my work and doing quality work every day? School is our job whether people like it or not and slacking doesn’t help anyone! And, at least in my mind, everyone is smart! For some people, concepts might come easier, but if we all put in the same amount of effort and care we’d all be the same!
Sorry for the rant. It’s just this year people have been getting especially on my nerves about luck+grades.
@sewin2music
I could not agree more on your statement that “everyone is smart”. If we all apply ourselves, we all should have decent grades. Like you said some people have to try harder then someone else, but put the work in and you will see results. That also includes listening in class. In my case, about half of my biology class complains about their grades and when I get a A’s or something they think I am doing some kind of magic trick. I, honestly, barely study for that class and have an exceptional grade, and all I do is actually listen and take notes when needed.
I have got all three comments more than twice this year each. I’m not sure to take those as a compliment or not so I’m just like “umm, Thanks”. I often try to encourage/help people studying or what not and some accept while the ones that don’t really want to put the work in, keep complaining. But, I know there are exceptions to this (we don’t really know their back story so I try not to be so harsh on them). Okay I will also stop ranting now…
@sewin2music I’m the kind of person that would say “oh, of course she/he got the highest score”. I think that they, or at least I do, are kind of congratulating you. There is usually one girl/boy that always scores the highest out of everyone and depending on the way they say it, it could actually be a compliment. Like if you always get the highest score, then everyone will expect that you will always get the highest score on every test. Sorry if this doesn’t make any sense.
@ak2018 I don’t like getting the highest score every test because when I get a lower grade I get ridiculed by someone, and it so awful. That is why I don’t usually boast about my grades, just my thought. ~O) ~O) time for an all nighter. Anyone with me?
Also, I took my Geometry EOC test today and I got a 390/600 and I needed a 400 to pass. I was so close and I could’ve passed if I actually didn’t guess on the last few questions. Oh well.
Edit: I just realized I only needed one more question to pass! :((
@ak2018 Does your geometry allow retakes or anything like that? Not passing because of one question is the worst thing ever. It is probably a 10 on the grade pain scale from 0-10 with 10 being the worst. Lol.
I have some Alg. II homework, but I might get to bed soon here and start on that during second period tomorrow or something. Procrastination at its finest.
@tonyk16 Exactly! I try to help people at lunch when that ask for help but the always get distracted! Its so frustrating!!! And then people in my Ap Euro class during group work are always complaining about how they have a C or D in the class. And then I end up doing their work for them ! X-X
@ak2018 I’m ok with when it comes out as a compliment but even then, I don’t like the attention. I always feel like a deer in headlights or embarrassed or something. I don’t even know why!
@ak2018 The expectaions nearly kill me! Like today, we did Jeopardy in chem to study and the teacher was like looking for a smart person for an example and I was like don’t look at me?! Aren’t we all smart?! Then When it was actually my turn to answer the ?'s i was kind of shaky. I guess part of that is stage fright but the majority was what people would say when I messed up…It was Isotope not ion…oops.
The teachers make it worse though. They pick a nice example and either forget to cover up the name or tell the whole class “look how much better this person’s work looks than everyone else’s” What are they thinking!!! All those death glares… Again sorry for the rant. Thanks for replying though! It helps knowing other people feel the same way…
@mamaba I have a friend who is finding out if he got accepted to MIT or not tomorrow. Another friend and I are going to surprise him with brownies at Science Bowl if he makes it in.
@tonyk16 That’s true! Same for me. Third week of January. I would have joined you on the all-nighter, but I hate coffee and have a concert today. I’m probably going to pull one the 31st to the 1st (or the 30th to the 31st).
@Hamlong Good luck!!
@sewin2music I agree with your rant! A lot of people in my grade were like that to me in elementary school (4th and 5th grade) when I was getting better grades than everyone else. One girl was even following me around during a work time thing in library class to mooch the answers off of me. Nowadays, in my history class I am basically the only one who does the work when we play Jeopardy because most of the other people in my class don’t care about school. : /
@tonyk16 Yeah they do allow retakes, but I believe I won’t be able to take it until the end of the year. But as I have said before, it doesn’t matter. I have passed Geometry and all that will happen is that my high school transcript will that that Geometry will be an unverified credit. That will not affect me at all during college admissions. I might take it again, but I really don’t have to.
@sewin2music I see what you mean and I understand. We are all smart, but some of us are just willing to do more work. I don’t usually have stage fright when I’m called on.
@frazzledazzle I fell asleep anyways. A friend and I are going to be trying to stay up all night, no sleep at all, go to school and our sports practices and see what happens. We failed once when we both fell asleep, but we will be trying it again before mid-terms. It’s going to be great.
@tonyk16 I really wouldn’t recommend doing that. Believe me, I’ve tried it before and I was so tired the next day. I’m probably going to have to do it again tonight as I have a lot of work to do tonight. “Due tomorrow, do tomorrow” is the new problem-free philosophy lol
@sewin2music In my school typically the word tri hard has a positive and negative connotation. The positive being you’re such a tri hard how’d you study for this test so efficiently(positive) and tri hard why’d you participate so much in regular English we can get A’s without even trying(negative)
@sewin2music in our honors/AP classes raising your hand is seen as good and if the teacher compliments your work the kids actually give you respect, this is probablly the result of me going to an extrememly competetive highly grade-deflating school where the most respected kids are the ones that get into high to mid tier UC’s
@ak2018 If I end up completing that challenge I will probably die from falling over the second floor track and snapping my back on a gymnastics bar.
Due tomorrow, Do tomorrow is the best solution ever. Been practicing this “philosophy” for ages now and it has really made me become a person that can thrive under pressure. Ten page essay due next period, that’s why there is five minute intervals between classes, duh. #stressjunkie
@BucketsUCSC That’s exactly the type of class i’d like to be in! I tried IB for a little while last year because I thought that would be what the classes were like, but it turned out to be a munch of people complaining about a) there’s too much work so i’m not going to do it b) I’m only here because of my parents c) the very rare person who gets me and my work ethic so then I quit…I probably should have stayed but I was too fed up. take no offence, I’m sure IB is different depending on the school
@tonyk16 I tried last night (I had a concert and a ton of homework), but I fell asleep at 12:30.
@ak2018 That philosophy is amazing! I am repping it very well right now. I have a worksheet for AP Bio due in 5 mods, and French due in 12 mods. Doing my Bio during lunch (lunch is for doing homework, right?) and French during band (we don’t do anything the day after the concert).
