My grades are crap right now, I have a 95 in French. Like how??
@stanford200381 aw cmon man, thats just pushing it.
Grades came out, overjoyed that I have a 96.2 in Latin.
Your grades are above average man, don’t let the standards of this forum replace the standards of the world.
@Bohseon It’s not that, it’s just that my grades are lower than last quarter. I seem to be getting low grades in the easy classes, but I have really high grades in the ones that are supposed to be hard.
Hey everyone!
I’ve really been going through a rough time. On Monday I have to start at a new school due to a family emergency. My dad took custody of me so now I live with him. It’s pretty hard. I’m going from a small school of 500 to a city school of 2000. It’s so scary.
The only good thing I’m dealing with right now are my grades.
English 9- 97
Spanish 2- 100
Algebra 2 Advanced- 113
Environmental Science- 106
Theatre Arts- 100
Biology 1- 96
Luckily, they’re putting me in all Honors classes, which is a plus. I’m just so worried. It’s a totally different environment and I’m scared I’m going to struggle to make friends. I do get more opportunities now, which is cool, but I miss my old school.
I’m not going to be able to take my 2 period English as I usually do, so for the rest of the semester, they’re either putting me in a fluff class or a study hall because there’s only 2 weeks left.
Also, the new school corporation is thinking of making me take the semester finals for the new school, which I think is complete bogus because my other school obviously has a different curriculum. I’ll see how it goes on Monday.
Yo, genuine condolences and legit hope that stuff gets better for you. Be yourself when in a new environment, that always helps!
Thank you @Bohseon! Today’s my first day so I’m a little nervous. My schedule’s done a bit of revising but otherwise it’s similar.
Honors English 9
Spanish 2
Honors Algebra 2
Earth and Space Science
Theatre Arts
Honors Biology 1
I’m excited for the opportunities here but God it’s so scary.
@CavsFan2003 Best of luck to you! I’m sure you’ll do great, I hope that everything is okay and gets better!
A month from today first semester will be over. I can’t believe how fast it’s going!
4 days left until Christmas break… just barely holding on lol
Luckily, the new school is just keeping my old grades from my old school. It’s finals week, but I don’t have to take the finals! I’m hoping this week is just easy- Thursday is the last day.
I’m trying out for the musical because it’s a good way to make friends. I don’t care if I don’t get a part, I’ll work crew if I don’t.
Indoor track conditioning starts very soon, too. I’m really not adapting well to the new environment, but I’ve got to power through… at least I get 2 weeks of break!
This semester has certainly gone fast, jeez. Most of my final grades are in (semester ends this Friday because our schedule was already weird and Hurricane Irma made it even weirder), and they’re all over 95. After my two finals tomorrow I’m pretty much done for 2017. Aside from my Academic Olympics/Science Olympiad/MUN/All-State Choir prep, I should have a pretty relaxing winter break
Speaking of which: Academic Olympics is somehow a thing in my life now. Tried out for the team thinking I wouldn’t get it - they said there were only three spots for the 20+ people trying out and that they weren’t going to take freshmen or sophomores except as alternates, but I guess the club president and the teacher sponsor really liked me and now I’m officially on the team? (As a real member, not an alternate. Aside from my one sophomore friend who got chosen as an alternate, it’s mostly seniors and a few juniors. I’m the team baby. It’s great, y’all.)
Hope everyone is having a good end of semester. @CavsFan2003 good luck at your new school, it sounds like you’ll do great there!
Thanks @chrysalism! Good job on making the team!!
Uhh my teacher gave me a 33/42 on our test. It should be higher though because she entered this grade but didn’t grade my extended response. Our online testing portal says “extended response scores pending” and I know she didn’t grade it because when I finished my test it said 33/42 since it only grades the multiple choice. This is why I hate taking test online!
Yesterday I signed up for the June 2018 SAT. Obviously it’s early to take the SAT but I actually need to take it for a 2-year residential high school I’m applying to.
Today I took a practice test and scored a 1260- 610 Math and 650 Reading + Writing. I’m pleased with the score, cause it’s only practice. I feel like if I practice steadily (not too much) for 7 months, I might be able to get into the 1400 range. Or I won’t, I won’t be mad if I score 1200s-1300s.
Hey everyone! I’m feeling a little bad because it’s sort of apparent that I’m late to this forum. I’m sort of annoyed with school right now. I’m a small town kid–like REALLY small town. I go to a private K-12 school, with barely 100 students in it. There are no Honors courses or AP classes at all, and we can’t do dual enrollment until 10th grade. There are close to no electives, as in 1 or 2, and 2 days of gym per week are required if you don’t play sports. There are close to no extracurriculars. Sports tend to get canceled constantly, and the administration is pretty stubborn about new things. I tried to get a debate team started up a couple months ago, but they wouldn’t budge. I’m trying to convince my parents to let me try for a boarding school like Interlochen, Andover, Exeter, etc., because they really appeal to me, and my Mom, Aunt, and other relatives attended them. My parents really like my school and are very conservative, and so they won’t let me even try for it.
There are a couple good teachers, but some of them are down right terrible. Specifically our literature teacher, which is a real pity, as literature is my favorite subject. I also don’t have any organized activities to do outside of school, as we are in a really tiny town, and my parents are too busy with work to drive me anywhere. My GPA is a 3.87, which has disappointed me a lot. I’m trying for some contests though, specifically the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards. I’m stressing over that. I spent 7th and 8th grade in a middle school charity organization, but I’m not in the high school one due to being the captain of the Quiz Bowl team (and because the high school charity group doesn’t get anything done, from what I’ve heard). The Quiz Bowl team is, at the moment, the one school thing I’m really devoted to, so I’m putting a lot of my effort into it.
I’m a fairly good actor, but not a good singer. We alternate between a play one year and a musical the next. We’re doing a musical this year, so I’m pretty much out, but next year I might have a chance.
Sorry about the rant, but the truth is, I’m really worried. Without any AP classes or any of the amazing things you all are doing, I’m scared colleges won’t even take a chance on me. I hate my school. I’m going to try to look at it from my parent’s perspective, and I’m going to apply for some summer programs, but I don’t think I’ll get in. And anyway, if I get into ones like Interlochen, my parents, understandably, won’t pay the money. After all, Interlochen programs go into the 10K of dollars–and that’s withstanding how hard they are to get into. Anyway, sorry about the long, confusing comment. Do you guys have any suggestions on what I can do?
@FlameAlchemist
Don’t worry, you’re in no way late to this thread - there’s only 7 or 8 active posters on it, lmao.
That’s a shame. The good thing is that colleges only judge you based on the maximum course rigor you could take at your school - so if you took a few Dual Enrollment classes bc that’s the highest level you could take at your school, admissions officers have to look at your application the same as that of someone who took all AP’s because that was the highest level their school offered. You could take summer courses or self study APs, but you don’t have to.
If you can’t start anything at your school (although the debate team seems like a good idea, you should try again), you should focus your efforts on showing initiative outside of school. If literature/writing is one of your passions, keep doing writing contests and maybe try to get published - magazines such as Teen Ink might be a good start - and if your school has some sort of newspaper you should try and join that. If you like to act, maybe your town has some sort of community theatre program? (That might be off the table if your parents can’t drive you, but idk.) You could always try starting a business or something. It sucks when your school doesn’t offer many opportunities - I know that feel, I used to go to a dinky K-8 private school where some grades had less than 10 kids - but that doesn’t mean there’s nothing you can do.
Many boarding schools/summer programs offer decent financial aid - for example, as someone who’s attended DukeTIP multiple years, I know many people who got free rides or very close to one.
You could try studying for the SAT or ACT? I took the ACT as an 8th grader, got a good score on it, and it’s been a massive help with scheduling and summer programs ever since.
Best of luck to you. Also, no idea if you’re still into FMA, but I love your username - Mustang was always my favorite character
@CavsFan2003 good luck on your SAT! That’s awesome, if you study you’ll do amazing!!
Thanks!!
@FlameAlchemist Don’t feel bad about being in a small school without opportunities. My old school was considerably bigger than yours but it was still very small and we didn’t have much to do. You really have to go out of your way to get stuff when you live somewhere like that.
Colleges will see that you aren’t able to take APs and stuff, and they’ll judge you based on what you have. If you can take Dual Enrollment classes then totally do that but don’t feel bad if you can’t, AOs see your circumstances and stuff. As for lack of extracurriculars, I’d just say you should go out and do stuff on your own. You said you like to write and stuff, so definitely pursue writing competitions and try and get published! Chrysalism had a great idea- TeenInk is a good place to start if you want to get published in a magazine.
Also, I understand the whole boarding school situation, even if mine’s a little different than yours. I was allowed to apply to a boarding school named Culver Academies, about 1hr30min away from where I currently live. I was actually admitted and everything, but they gave me $0 in financial aid when I needed $46k. Be careful about that- most boarding schools are incredibly expensive and won’t give financial aid if you need a full ride. The same thing happened to my friend.
Just do what you can in your situation and then try and convince your parents of the boarding school thing. Good luck!
@chrysalism and @CavsFan2003 Thanks for the reply! Yeah, contests sound like a good idea. Summer camps only work out if we get a lot of financial aid because my family’s pretty big. Still, I’m working on it and I’m hoping it’ll go OK. Teen Ink sounds like a really good place to get published! I took a look at it, and it sounds awesome. As for boarding schools, that subject’s closed hard and fast. Mom and Dad told me that even if I got a full ride (which wouldn’t happen–Mom and Dad could manage some of it–it’d be tough, but they could), they still wouldn’t let me go. They don’t want me leaving home yet, which I guess is sort of fair. It just doesn’t feel like that, if you know what I mean.
By the way, CavsFan2003, I went to a summer camp at Culver when I was a little kid. It was around 2 days long, and I was like nine. It was a long drive. It didn’t end up being a great experience–some mean counselors and what not. I don’t know if that’s a reflection on the Academy or anything, so don’t take my comment as proof. Community theater won’t work out as my parents are way too busy to drive me. Besides, my school’s a private Christian one, so it’s not connected to any city programs.
Oh yeah, and chrysalism, I am VERY into FMAB! It’s one of my all-time favorite animes (which is saying a lot, because I’m REALLY into anime)!!! Roy Mustang is my favorite anime character of all time!!! That scene with Lust. . . . Just ultimate awesomeness!!! Anyway, after my fan rant, thanks a ton for the advice! I’m still trying with boarding school, but honestly Dad glares at me the second I start to enter a conversation even resembling it, so. . . Yeah. I’m outta luck. The stuff you guys said about colleges and APs was really reassuring, because honestly, I was stressing.
Good luck on your SAT, CavsFan2003!
Hey guys. Sorry I haven’t posted in a while I usually just read your posts. I currently have all As or A pluses. My problem is that I’m failing gym. My gym teacher is really strict and lowers everyone’s grade for virtually no reason. I joined the debate club in my team and am thinking about joining track. I have no running experience at all but I’m tall so the coach recommended it. I’m not sure I’m going to join though.
@Potter3846 Same. My gym teacher makes us do a whole research project, and take tests and everything. It’s crazy annoying. She’s pretty nice otherwise, though, so you probably have things worse. Good luck!
@FlameAlchemist I currently have a 54% in his class and he doesn’t offer extra credit. This is a real damper on my transcript since everything else is in the high 90s. He said that there’s nothing he could do. In the second semester my grades are going to reset and I can raise my grade a lot but still this really stressed me out.
