AP Comp Sci, DECA, AP World, AP French, AP Calc AB or BC (undecided), English 10, AP Chem or AP Bio (at my school you need to take reg chem before taking AP, but you don’t need to for bio. I am taking chem and physics this year.)
Hoping to do Pre-Calc (doing AP Stats rn) and maybe find a research position. Also want to go to debate camp.
Probably STEM or Business, want to help people in someway though.
Just curious - has anyone found any research positions? If so, how?! Like @figuresk8school I dream of going to RSI.
@scenicstars Stats really isn’t that bad, imo its overhyped. Conceptually, I would say it is harder than Algebra 2 for me but people tend to lose a lot of points for not learning the exact syntax and formatting correctly.
Honors English 10, Honors Chemistry 1, AP Statistics, AP Calculus AB, Entrepreneurship and New Ventures/Health Education, Spanish 3, Honors World History
I’m taking Pre-Calculus.
I mean I dunno. I like to think I’m doing what’s good for my future. I want to study economics/business, go to law school, and get into politics.
Hey y’all! The place I applied to for a job called me back and said within a week I should know if I get an interview! I really hope I get the job. I’m wanting to buy a new laptop and save up for college.
@CavsFan2003 I hope you get the job! Thanks to everyone who replied. I’d like to ask for opinions on something. My school counselor just told me I should graduate a year early. My parents are on board and I think it’s a great idea. However, I would take fewer AP classes and have a lower weighted GPA and class rank, which could affect the admissions process.
My parents also broke the news that they can’t afford to send me to any college that costs more than $30,000 a year (tuition, room and board, books, etc) despite making more than $200,000 annually. Apparently, they’re in such a huge amount of debt that they’re barely keeping the lights on, but because of how much they make, I don’t qualify for financial aid. I’d have to get an enormous scholarship to go anywhere besides a couple of huge public schools in my home state. I won’t get a car until after I graduate college (again, probably a year early) if I even get one then, so I can’t get a job to make money for school. What do you all think I should do?
@bwhs2021 I’m sorry, that sucks. I really don’t have any clue on what you should do. If you live in a city, or something close, maybe you can get the bus to a job. If this is possible, I suggest you stay in high school all four years that way you can save the maximum money possible.
I know how you feel not really being able to afford college. Honestly though, there are so many colleges in the United States! I’m sure you can find 5-10 that you have a good chance at and they will provide decent enough aid so you can attend. Work extra hard so you can get some scholarships, even if they are small, because they add up!
Look into the Ohio State University. I know it seems to be associated with parties and such. However, their honors college and scholars program is excellent. Also they have a great pre med program, and their medical school is in the top 30 I believe. They have great scholarships for out of state students. If you keep your grades in I’m sure you can get two scholarships (can’t remember their names) that will be worth $16500(each year).
I’m really having a rough quarter. I’ve missed 5 days due to panic attacks and illness. The whole situation with my transferring and my mother, namely, has gotten worse, so I’ve been worrying about that. This is taking a toll on my grades.
Honors English 9- A+
Physical Education 1- C+
Honors Earth Science- A
Honors Algebra 2- B
Honors Biology 1- A-
Spanish 2- A
Theatre Arts 1- B+
My gym grade will go up very shortly, I’m just waiting for her to put in my makeup day grades. Consider that an A+, I guess. I know it’s not that bad but my grades have always been good and so it really stressed me out to disappoint my dad with lower grades. I’ve just been so stressed and my sleep and mental being has been effected. I’m pretty sure I’m depressed but I haven’t gone to see a psychiatrist. I just feel inferior and not good because of my performance this quarter. It’s only been a few weeks, though, so I know I shouldn’t stress because all of them I can get up. I wish I wasn’t so stressed, though.
I’m new to this thread as well. I’m kinda dying right now second semester because there’s like four assignments in the midquarter so my grades look like crap.
@CavsFan2003 I’m in the same boat with the parent situation… I guess if you talk these things out you feel better like right now as I was saying above, my grades are looking kinda crap but mostly because there are few things in the grade book and how overworked I feel. I find it cool that you’re not the only one in these places so we can figure out strats to make ourselves better in school. I bet by the semester we’ll be looking better, especially when the long weekend hits you can get some time to unwind perhaps.
AP Chem, Honors English, AP Enviro, AP World, AP Comp Sci A, Honors French III, and Honors Pre-Calc
What, if any, classes are you taking this summer?
Just some crash courses for my 10th grade courses
What do you all want to do in life and how are you using high school to help achieve this?
Go into the medical field, likely in either cardiology, neurology, or genetics. High School is just my 'launching pad' to get as much knowledge as I can from my classes in order to learn at a much faster pace in college to get to where I want in high school. The courses I'm taking also give me flexibility in worse case scenarios where I lose interest in medicine and go into tech or engineering (basically flexible for all STEM).
Apparently grade updates are a thing we do on this thread so I’ll post mine. I got my second quarter grades yesterday. They ended up pretty well except for math. It’s not my best subject.
Pre-AP World History Honors- 99% ( Highest my teacher has ever had)
Research Biology Honors- 98% (Second highest my teacher has ever had, highest was me last quarter)
Algebra 2/ Trigonometry Honors- 96%
English 9 Honors- 98%
Latin 3- 102% (Highest my teacher has ever had, tied with my grade last quarter)
Intro to Business and Marketing- 99%
Health and PE 9- 99%
4.6 weighted GPA, 4.0 unweighted, cumulative (including high school classes taken in middle school) 4.43 weighted, 4.0 unweighted
In unrelated news, if you live in the states, we are under yet another government shutdown.
This is a stressful month for me but I hope everyone else is having fun.
3D Design 1 - 99 A
Algebra 1 - 102 A (I’m pretty sure, he didn’t grade my quiz yet but I feel like I did well).
Art 1 - N/A didn’t put our projects in, yet.
History - 95 A
English 9 - 98 A
French 1 - 98 A
Physics - 89.81 A (yikes, I suck at physics lol).
@stanford200381 Congratulations! Those grades are really good!
My school works in semesters, and we don’t have percentage grades, and my first semester’s grades were:
Math - A* (Like an A+)
Biology - A
Chemistry - A
Physics - A
Economics - A
English - C (Yikes, we didn’t have a teacher for most of the semester)
Business Studies - C (The teacher is the worst grader I’ve encountered)
What ECs do you guys recommend joining? I haven’t joined any this year because I went to a few interests meetings and realized the clubs I was interested in were mostly full of upperclassmen and I felt like I would just be an outcast, but I plan to start joining clubs next year. I heard colleges look alot at National Honor Society, but I don’t know if I’m interested in that. I might join Literary Magazine or Art Club, but then I also want an EC that I know colleges will look at.
Also would joining track be a bad idea? I hate sweating, but only if I have to stay with that sweat on me all day (which is why I didn’t want to take PE bc our locker rooms don’t have showers). I’ve heard that the track meets are before school, but I will check with the coach, I really hope it’s after school…
@clo2021 Join ECs that match fields you’re generally interested in! imo freshman year should be used to try out ever club you think you MIGHT be interested in doing long term, then narrowing your list down to what really interests you… also if you join as a freshman you can have a nice leadership position (the thing that colleges look at) by sophomore or junior year. Don’t let being the youngest person stop you. (I’m the only underclassman on my 12-person Academic Olympics team, and one of like three freshmen on our 20-person Science Olympiad team, but I’m still winning stuff and having fun.)
Deffo do National Honor Society, it makes you seem like you know what you’re doing to colleges and participation narrows down to “go to meetings and do community service hours that you should already be doing”. Otherwise, just try things that you think look interesting - you don’t have to commit, just go to a few meetings. You look like you’re really into art and literature, and my ECs are mainly STEM-based so I can’t offer much advice as to specifics, but the two clubs you mentioned seem like good starting points. I can recommend that you try out Model UN and/or Speech and Debate if you like writing and presenting stuff (and if your school offers them) - I’m in MUN and it’s a super amazing experience, and I have plenty of friends who say the same about Speech!
& joining track isn’t a bad idea unless it’s going to directly stop you from doing well in school. I row crew 4-5x a week and it’s not messing me up, but I know plenty of people who made crew pretty much their whole life and are pulling straight Cs bc of it. If you end up not hating it, it’s definitely good to have a varsity sport under your belt. + you can always ask a current track team member how they feel about it, and how they deal with meets being in the morning?
tl;dr join what you think looks fun, is well run at your school, and could possibly get you a leadership position later on. Sports & volunteer work are also not a bad idea.
An A in physics? Nice! Not taking it this year, but i still can’t even fathom a possible A in that class, lmao. And how is economics going? We don’t have that class at our school (unfortunately), so I’m just kinda curious about it, lol.
My 1st sem grades were~
Geometry H: A
English H: A+
Spanish 2: A+
AP Human Geo: A+
Bio H: A+
@clo2021 I don’t think I can help you much because my school has barely any extracurriculars, but I’ll give it a try. Quiz Bowl, which I’m in, is really awesome. You look like a humanities geek, like me, and Quiz Bowl tends to be fairly good in the humanities. Your school’s literary magazine sounds like a good place to try for as well. I don’t know if this would interest you, but I’ve heard that debate clubs are fun. Anyway, good luck! Extracurricular activities are something that colleges definitely are interested in, and besides, they’re fun!
