High School Class of 2021

@scenicstars I’ll tell you, that A was hard work. I just did Physics on a more advanced level, like AP-level, and so the class is easy for me.

In my school, you take the same subject for two year, so this year we’re focusing on Micro and next year Macro. It’s pretty easy if you listen in class. Econ is pretty interesting, I just took it for fun though.

Welcome all new members to our board! We’re very happy to have you all here!

Have a good day!

Life update:

  • All my grades are above 95 yeet. My WGPA is like 4.8 (our county weights both honors and AP as 5.0)
  • Our Science Olympiad team didn't go to states (it's only existed for like a year, so not that big of a surprise) but I got 2nd, 3rd and 6th in my events, having studied for a grand total of 3 hours (for the ones I got 2nd and 3rd in - I went into the one I got 6th in completely blind), so I'm really happy about that! Was one of 2 people on the team to get two medals, and I think if I actually study like a normal person next year I can freakin' wreck.
  • I have contacts now!! Granted, I could only get the 2 week ones because my vision is so bad, but STILL
  • Gonna try out for All-National Choir, which I only just learned is a thing. Wish me luck :)
  • I hate my chem teacher with a passion and now there's a petition to get her fired so that's A+

Completely unrelated but can someone recommend me a good sci-fi or supernatural TV show? my favorite show (Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency) got cancelled back in December and I’m still not over it haha - I need a new thing to obsess about.

also yeah @ all the new members of this thread welcome & glad you’re here!!!

@chrysalism So, looking for sci-fi and supernatural? I think I’ve got you covered. Think. Strong think. I’ve heard Supernatural is good (it’s actually called Supernatural). Also, if you’re looking for movies, Blade Runner and Blade Runner 2049 are both good. The Prestige, another movie, is a little more fantasy-ish, but it’s still really good. Other TV shows . . . My friend likes Westworld. I’ve never seen it, but I’ve heard good things. This might be fantasy, but Dr. Strange and Mr. Norel is supposed to be good. The Magicians, another fantasy show, is definitely good, though you should read the books it’s based on first. Well, this one is really mainstream, and not really sci-fi, but you might like Stranger Things.
If you’re OK with anime, I know a couple good ones. Some good science fiction ones are Psycho-Pass, Neon Genesis Evangelion, Code Geass (Futuristic mecha, so I don’t know if it counts), Shinsekai Yori, and some others I can’t remember off the top of my head. Some supernatural ones are Black Butler, D. Gray Man, Soul Eater, Owari no Seraph and (sort of supernatural) Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood. There are some others, but I can’t come up with them at the moment. Good luck!
Hello, new people!

anyone else in IB MYP?

@Spider21 I’m not in the MYP, but my school offers the DP from junior year. In freshman and sophomore years we have to take IGCSE.

What classes are you taking in the MYP? My brother may take it next year (he’s in seventh grade) so I’m just asking.

@FlameAlchemist ooh I’ve seen quite a few of those!! I’m the biggest Stranger Things fan, and I loved both of the Blade Runner movies & Doctor Strange. Also, yeah, definitely into anime - I actually need to finish Evangelion bc my friends keep begging me to (+ my boyfriend is starting up a homebrew tabletop campaign based on it, which sounds awesome.)

I’ve heard good things about Westworld and The Magicians (& a lot of those anime) - will have to check those out, thank you!! I’ve also had Wynonna Earp and Orphan Black recommended to me, so those too.

BTW - if anyone is looking for a new show Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency is quite literally the best thing I’ve ever watched. 10/10 will not disappoint.

Crazy that you guys have your schedules planned three years out…

I’m a senior, and I’ve been working on college apps. When I get all my results back I’ll let you know my stats and where I get into. I understand worrying about college, but people are not lying when they tell you that if you just do what you love and learn to portray what you love to others, you will be fine. Do extracurriculars you like, and take classes you like. There will obviously be some classes you take just for your college application and some you take just for the sake of class rank, but try to do what you can to make the experience enjoyable. And never trade school in for your mental health. If you need to drop a class because it stresses you out, do not be afraid to do so.

At the end of the day, college admissions are really random and you could do EVERYTHING just for them and it would make no difference. So it’s better to enjoy high school, with college in mind.

@yaaasss how are you in French 5?

Wow. It’s so cool that you guys have your schedules planned out! My school doesn’t really have any electives, so I can’t pick my schedule. Enter small town blues.

We received our scheduling sheet yesterday.
What I’ve been recommended/signed up for so far:

Honors English 10 (she has not signed off yet, but most likely will).
Honors American World History 2
Honors Geometry
Honors Algebra 2
Honors Biology
Oral communications
Computer science 2 (debating)

This is one of the hardest schedule my school has for a sophomore. The only way this could be more challenging is if you take honors Biology and Honors Chemistry; however, since I’m taking algebra 2 and geometry, I will not be taking Honors Chemistry.

That would be too difficult considering honors history 2, honors geometry, and honors biology are known to be very hard in my school. Honors bio is almost equivalent to AP bio here.

My schedule looks super easy, compared to all of yours.

@stanford200381 that’s still pretty rigorous, I’m taking 5 honors and it’s pretty difficult and pretty scared to sign up for 3 APs and 2 Honors, not sure how I’ll withstand it. People are right when they say focus on having a life and extracurricular but I’m an awkward person without many friends and no activities. It’s just who I am and since I don’t need the extra time I’m taking a super rigorous schedule. I guess it just depends on whether or not you want a life XD

@symmbowL I went to a french immersion elementary school and am on an accelerated track. Also you may want to lighten up your load and bury yourself in an activity you like. I believe colleges like to see a balance.

On a side note: I’m having a bit of a crisis. My parents want me to only focus on one or two activities and currently, I am heavily involved in Debate and Speech (I consider them one activity), Robotics and DECA

I think I can be really successful in Debate and Speech (like nationally ranked) but it doesn’t really fit my narrative for my classes, which is STEM. Please give me any advice you have.
^Does one narrative make or break a college app?

@yaaasss Honestly, if I were you, I’d do whichever one you want to do. After all, colleges tend to notice if you’re doing something only for the application. If you can be nationally ranked in Debate and Speech, that would be awesome! If you like both activities, however, that is a real problem. In a case like that, I’d give it a lot of thought and talk to your teachers. A STEM career is really tough to get into unless you’re very successful, so don’t limit your high school time to that unless you really love STEM.
A narrative can make a college app, but only if that narrative is something you are truly passionate about, a spike that really matters to you. Or even a spike that you’re really successful in. Choose what feels right to you. Good luck!

Just got my first award in Model UN and I’m stoked!! I think I might be able to gavel (1st place) @ my next conference, considering I’ll be dualing with my boyfriend (he’s better at public speaking, I’m better at researching and writing, it’s a “with our powers combined” sorta thing).

@yaaasss Do what you’re most interested in. Allocate your time towards things you like and can see yourself wanting to be active in, not things you don’t like as much but are doing to shape your narrative.

Here’s my schedule plans because everyone seems to be posting theirs:

Sophomore: AP BC Calc, AP US History, AP Biology, H Anatomy & Physiology, H English II, H Chinese III, Choir
Junior: DE Calc 3/DiffEq, AP Government, AP Macroeconomics, AP Lang, AP Chemistry, H Chinese IV, Choir
Senior: AP Stats (or whatever math comes after Calc3), AP Music Theory, AP Lit, AP Physics I, AP Chinese, Choir

How are you taking AP Calc BC as a sophomore? I was at the conference this weekend too! Were you in GA?

do you have to be a genius to participate in the science olympiad? i’m great at bio but not so much chem.
