High School Class of 2021

@chrysalism Great job!

@lumen3141 Of course not! I tried a few Chem questions, and with basic-AP knowledge (I don’t take the class, I did some Chem on KhanAcademy), I was able to answer all the stoichiometry questions.

Bio was too hard for me, though, lol.

My life is in shambles

Okay, maybe not, but I’m still so disorganized and just rustled. After everything w/ my Mom, I can’t get myself to focus on school work. To add on to this, my school is getting rid of Honors classes, which means I’m going to be switching schools again.

My grades are dropping.

Honors English 9- 100
Physical Education- 100
Honors Earth Science- 92
Honors Algebra 2- 88 gasp
Honors Biology 1- 96
Spanish 2- 97
Theatre Arts- 88 gasp

That 92 is a B+!!! And the 88s aren’t B+, they’re just Bs. My Earth Science grades should go up after she fixes one of my assignments, but I have NO clue how to get Algebra 2 up. I’m hoping my Theatre grade will go up. Ugh, I’m so stressed.

@lumen3141 I took Algebra I as a sixth grader and progressed on from there. My middle school had most of the advanced kids take it in 7th; I was just a nerdlord and started early. Currently enrolled in Dual Enrollment Precalc/Trig; it’s basically a rehash of Alg II plus matrices, not that hard tbh.

That’s cool! Were you at FIMUN? (Just asking bc there’s probably at least two conferences going on at the same time somewhere in the US.) Yeah, I was in ECLAC - just because that’s literally the only ECLAC I’ve seen that wasn’t a Spanish speaking committee and I wanted the chance to see what it was like. It ended up being a combination GA/Crisis that included directives and communiques, which was super interesting.

And, no, Science Olympiad is for everyone (although depending on your school you might have to compete with other people to get on the team). I’m won two awards at my regional competition as a freshman, and am running for an officer position next year. It’s actually better to specialize in one specific science, because you can pick and choose the events that best suit you. If you like Bio, you’re gonna want to check out Disease Detectives, Microbe Mission, Ecology, Anatomy/Physiology, and/or the classification one that switches yearly between Herpetology/Oology/Invasive Species, as well as maybe the build events. (Obviously not all of them!! Limit yourself to two or three, otherwise you’re gonna want to kys with all the prep work!!) There’s a full list of Division C events on the SOINC website. Fully recommend it, it’s a lot of fun!

@FlameAlchemist thanks!!! <3

@CavsFan2003 You’re still doing okay, don’t worry. Your family situation is in no way your fault, and the fact that your grades are still that high while you’re dealing with everything is a feat in and of itself. Colleges only look at yearly grades, and as long as you don’t completely check out quarter four you’ll most likely end up with A’s (or, worst case scenario, B+'s) in your classes. We’re all super proud of you and are here if you need anything!!

So I’m a member of the class of 21 as well! I’m curious as to how you all study, because right now I have an A- in my math class (Geometry Honors). If anyone does care, my grades and schedule S1 were:

Theology- A+

Modern World History- A+

Band-A+

Spanish 1 Honors - A

English 1 Honors- A

Biology Honors- A+ (known for following the AP curriculum)

Geometry Honors- A+

Furthermore, I’m taking an online Algebra 2 course to advance to PreCalc next year, and a Health Ed course. High school feels hard to me right now, especially when I had mostly 100+s in middle school. My grades are really low right now and disappointing to me, so I’m wondering if you all have any study advice.

Thanks in advance!

I was @ MDC MUN :frowning:
I was in ECLAC in 6th grade and have been in GA since.

Thank you for the info on the Science Olympiad! My current school is 25 mi from my house so I’m transferring to another one next year (hopefully, find out March 15).

Yeah I took Alg 1 in 7th grade

Spanish 4 Honors - A
AP World History - A
Pre-IB/AP English I Honors Gifted - A
Pre-IB Chemistry - B
Algebra 2 Honors Gifted - B
AP Human Geography - A

I also took Psych 1 on FLVS, earning a 94%
The school I go to next year (hopefully) has 8 periods, consisting of lots of electives to complete Pre-IB requisites and tends to bump up unweighted GPAs.
My grades are subpar since I’ve been absent a lot because I’ve constantly been sick due to sleep deprivation and strain of going to my super far school (25 mi) every morning.

Weighted GPA: 4.67
Unweighted GPA: 3.81

Activities:
MUN (started off early so although it’s a common EC i’m fairly strong in it)
Science National Honors Society
Muslim Student Union
Key Club
HOSA (haven’t done or will do any competitions in it, I think)
Volunteer every week @ a children’s hospital

Next year, I have a bunch of EC’s plan at the new school, I’m only really worried about math

My GPA isn’t ideal so my math teacher suggests that I take math studies next year in place of Pre-Calc. I’ve gotten a 5 on the Algebra I EOC, and essentially need my foundations strengthened and need to recap all of Alg. 2. With proper math tutoring over the summer, I’m hoping to take DE Pre-Calc during sophomore year.

(Hoping to take pre-med track and double major in Biology and Comparative Government or International Affairs, HOPEFULLY at Columbia University)

Thoughts?

97/100 on my first physics test! So happy, I have a 95% in there now.

@lumen3141 It’s fine. My school is around 25 miles away as well. I just sleep in the car to catch up.

@stanford200381 Awesome! What was the test about?

Not to brag, but I just got a 50/50 on my physics test!

I kinda feel like this thread shouldn’t turn into a physics score flexing contest, but great job guys!

@yaaasss Haha. Well, I really didn’t have anything to do then, and the thread was silent for some time…

lmk lol

If anyone has any advice, it would be very much appreciated.

I have a 85% B. My art teacher is a very hard and subjective grader. It will be a miracle if I get an A. My friends brother has a 92% A in my teachers class; however, he does not try. I’m not trying to be mean, but my work is better then his so I should be atleast getting an A in that class. Unfortunately, since I did not have her in elementary school I get B’s while the people who did have her in elementary schools get A’s, even if there work is not as good.

I can accept a B if I earned it, but I didn’t. In my school you have to take all honors and get A’s to be valedictorian. It’s important that I be one of our valedictorians. My school has never had an African American valedictorian. It’s important to me and my family that I become a valedictorian. At my school you’re lucky if a black kid takes an honors class, so a black kid being valedictorian is news breaking. If I get a B in art this will ruin my chances. I don’t know what to do; no matter how hard I try it seems I most likely will not get an A. She just doesn’t like me.

I’m not even bad at art. I’m in the art club and my teacher last year wanted to put one of my projects in an art competition. I absolutely love art, and I’m good at it.

@stanford200381 Good on you for aiming to break stereotypes! I would think that if you would talk to a counselor or another art teacher and explain your situation they may be able to help if the teacher is bringing other factors than the quality of your art into your grade. Good luck!

I already posted this but didn’t get a single response from anyone. Y’all are free to tell me if I’m not welcome here or if I don’t meet CC’s “standards”.

Hi everyone. I haven’t been on here in forever. Anyways, I need some serious advice. I’ve been dealing with social anxiety for a while and it’s really never gotten in the way of school and academics. But recently, I’ve been so stressed that i’m having panic attacks in the morning before school and in class too. I’ve talked to my parents about it but they just think that i’m shy and don’t have an anxiety disorder. I want to switch to online school next year to be able to focus more on school, but I don’t know how to tell them this without them getting mad at me for “pretending” to have a mental illness. Thanks in advance for any advice.

@FuturePICUNurse I’m not 100% if this will work / is within your means, but do you think you’d be down for / can convince for your parents to go to therapy? Then you can continue to go to school if that appeases your parents and the therapy may help lessen the anxiety? If that isn’t plausible, maybe you can tell your parents about a potential plunge in grades because of the panic attacks you have in class? That could convince them, I’d imagine. I hope things work out for you!

@FuturePICUNurse In my limited knowledge, I agree with @scenicstars. Therapy may also be easier for your parents to manage. Good luck!

Hey guys, I’m very excited to join this thread! There’s a lot of bright and intelligent people here!

I need advice, is my schedule next year too much?

Symphonic Winds(top band)
French 2
English 10/11X*
AP Physics
AP Calc AB
Design & Digital Art 2
PE 10

*X courses are at a faster pace compared to the regular course(English 10). They combine half of the 10th and all of the 11th grade curriculum into a year long course.

Activities I think I’m doing:
-Soccer
-Track
-Key Club
-STLF
-Pep Band
-Jazz Band(1 or 2, but most likely 2. There are three jazz bands and Jazz 1 is the best)
-Pit Orchestra
-NHS
-FCA(Fellowship of Christian Athletes)
-Piano(45 min lessons every week)

Current GPA: 3.96(It’ll most likely go up to 4.0 by the end of the semester), and I’m currently taking the most rigorous courses offered to me.

I also would love to volunteer at a hospital starting this summer, or next year. But, I don’t know if I have any time. I would also like to apply for a job, but I probably won’t have enough time, unless I drop a few things.

I hope to go into the medical field in the future. I find everything in it very interesting. I’m using high school as an opportunity explore that field a bit, through research programs, volunteering, and courses at my school. Although, I don’t have enough room in my schedule to take those kinds of courses. Do you guys have any alternatives?

@scenicstars @yaaasss Unfortunately, my parents would never be on board with me going to therapy or getting anxiety medication. They don’t really even believe in mental illnesses. They have accused me of faking it for attention multiple times. I honestly don’t know what to do. I’m just kinda stuck feeling like this until I turn 18 and can make my own medical decisions, I guess.
