yikes that was really long sorry yall
@pointelessness Welcome to the thread!!
I got approved to be one of the student leaders who work for the freshman orientation. That’s kinda cool!
@CavsFan2003 That’s really cool! Congratulations!
P.S. - Anyone have tips for a bad freshman year? My GPA is a 3.763 and I know that isn’t as great as everyone else’s.
Also, does anyone know how I can change my profile picture?
Hey guys I’m back lol. Totally spaced out about the “multiple accounts” rule. I wish they would let you delete your account or at least change the username. For clarification, I had this account and @ilovebiomed but skieurope deleted @ilovebiomed so I guess I’m just gonna use this one now.
@pointelessness you have to go to your profile page and click on the text below it to change your picture
You guys are done with school? I still have an entire week of school after this one before finals.
@destinedforND thanks!
@birdbear Yeah, we finished classes on the 22nd.
@chrysalism definitely gonna try publishing a book! How did you get so much info on ecs too? Just curious, because you seem to be much more knowledgable and aware than I am about opportunities.
A+s in all my classes but English, where I was 0.3% away :(. Thought this semester would be bad, but it wasn’t as bad as I thought, clutched an A+ in a couple of my classes with 100s on my finals.
@pointlessness
I’d self study some APs, not aware of any real great resources though. I use Bozeman Science and he seems great for AP Biology so there’s that? Khan’s a great resource for AP Calc. Your ECs right now are already a good deal better than mine so there’s that lol.
Hi guys! It’s been a while since I posted here. I’m transferring my school in sophmore year and going to a school that sends kids to the ives every year. They also have a great advanced science research program that I may be able to go to so that’s exciting. All my grades are in the 90s but I have a 80 in gym. I have a lot of options for my schedule and have no idea what to choose
My finals start June 11 and we end on the third week of June. We were suppose to end earlier like first-second week but we had many snow days.
@pointelessness Welcome to the thread! So, I noticed you mentioned Interlochen and creative writing! I’m a fellow class of 2021 kid, and I just wanted you to know, in case you’re interested, that there’s a big community of writers here on CC. Especially on the contest threads (like Scholastic Art and Writing Awards, Young Arts, etc). Speaking of which, I’d really recommend Scholastic Arts and Writing Awards. I participated in it this year, and it was a ton of fun. I’m entering YoungArts this year (and just barely making the age limit, heh heh), though since it’s my first time, I can’t make a pronouncement on it. Anyhow, it’s really cool that you’re from Interlochen! They’re totally my dream school!
@wontonandrice I also noticed you mentioned creative writing. I’m pretty sure you’ve been on the thread for a while, so I probably should have talked to you earlier (it’s a long story, involving wifi troubles and power outages), but I’m here now. Well, all I can say is that there’s a big writing community, and you should enter Scholastic Art and Writing Awards! Anyway, it’s great to meet a bunch of fellow writers!
@clo2021 That’s late!
I just finished this week. Had so many finals. I was twitching for the last 2 weeks because of them. So glad school is out, I might’ve pulled my hair out if I wasn’t.
Had my biology final 8th hour today, teacher got it in by 6 pm as promised (my favorite teacher & subject, holy cow). I planned on studying and cramming just a bit last night but ended up falling asleep almost right away… good news is that I pulled a 94% on the final! Not bad for only 20 minutes of studying if I do say so myself. 4 more finals tomorrow and then I am home free
Any of you gone for any MUNs? My first one’s on the 15th, and so does anyone have any tips?
Chemistry is the WORST.
Be sure to know all the points and motions. Don’t be intimidated by those who speak eloquently and use lots of adjectives, often times the chairs will know they aren’t providing much substance. Bring a research binder with specific facts and have a pre-written speech for the Speaker’s List. If there are crisis committees, know parliamentary procedure. Good luck! @AtomicMan576
@AtomicMan576 oh boy model un is my LIFE here we go (i apologize in advance for the mini rant)
everything lumen said is awesome. make sure your research binder is up to par - you don’t need it to be massive, but have solutions that have worked in your country/other places as well as statistics you can use in your speeches. speaking of, before committee starts, try and come up with specific solutions on your own for each topic! chairs like when you show leadership in your bloc (working group that writes a resolution together) and have written a good chunk of your resolution, which is a lot easier to do when the bloc is relying on your core solutions (also, there’s something called author’s panel near the end which is a) where a few people from every bloc present their resolution to the entire committee and b) something you should be a part of if you want the chair to see you as a leader, and your bloc will pretty much have to put you on the author’s panel if your solutions are important and you’re the only one who can explain them in great detail).
some other stuff: don’t let people push you around or take advantage of you, and if people ask don’t say that you’re new or a freshman because that gives them an excuse to take advantage of you. if you have substantial points to make, try and be engaged/have your placard up to speak most of the time. having a neat acronym to refer to your resolution by is cool, if you can think of a good one. unless the chair is super stuck up you probably don’t have to say “point of personal privilege” to go to the restroom. if you’re in an unmoderated caucus + a few people are dominating the conversation + you see somebody who wants to speak but keeps getting drowned out, get everyone’s attention and tell them to let the person speak - it’s a good way to make friends and it looks hella diplomatic. the website Best Delegate has a ton of helpful guides for people new to model un that saved me when i first started.
good luck! mun is confusing when you first start but it’s really fun! what committee/country are you assigned to?
@wontonandrice thanks! i’ve just read a lot of books on college admissions, and i go to a decently competitive high school where people interested in writing have done all of those things. also, google is your friend in finding new ecs contests/competitions to participate in.
Most of my finals aren’t exams so that good. My English, History, and Tech finals are projects that are due on the day of the final exam for that subject. PE final is the mile run under 10 minutes which is easy. We did the Spanish final early so I don’t have to worry about that. I only have exams in Math and Bio
Also, I don’t know about you guys but I hate bubble sheets/scantrons with a passion. I’d rather take a test on a computer or be able to write my answers on a line or circle the letter for multiple choice. Having to precisely fill in that little bubble irks me, especially those scantrons with the rectangle bubbles. It’s been a pet peeve of mines since I was in elementary school, just like wooden #2 pencils.
@clo2021 Oh my god, yes! I swear it takes me 5 minutes out of my test trying to fill in those darn bubbles! Scantron tests make me paranoid, my palms are sweating right now and it’s already summer for me lol.
