@clo2021 Maybe I’m weird but I love Scantron tests lmao
@CavsFan2003 seconded.
@chrysalism @lumen3141 thanks y’all!
@wontonandrice yeah, I’m taking AP Psych this summer because it’s one of the easier APs although I wish I decided to self study for that one because I heard that it’s just a lot of memorization. I took Bio in 8th grade (like the regular class) but high school in the US doesn’t start til 9th so I didn’t get any credit- I was terrible at Bio, though, and I’m not sure if it was me or the teacher that was the problem. I was advised not to self study for AP Bio. Thoughts? Oh, and are you a fellow writer, too? And thanks haha I have to bring my grades up though
@FlameAlchemist yeah, I chickened out of submitting to Scholastic this year- I don’t think I’m eligible for YoungArts because I’m not a US citizen. Also, I’d tell you to come to Interlochen if it’s your dream school because they’re really good with financial aid but I realize that a lot of people on CC are super academically oriented and well rounded.
Question for y’all: I’m curious, is it worth mentioning a national music competition on a college application if you were a semifinalist?
@pointlessness I took AP Psych a month ago. You know what they say about memorization? I didn’t memorize anything, and the test was a breeze. Moral: you don’t need to memorize the text, just understand it well. I used a course on edX.org from UBC, it’s really helpful.
@AtomicMan576 Hm, interesting. I’m really excited to start AP Psychology because it interests me.
Hey you guys- just another quick question lol do you guys already know what to do with your lives (like college major wise) because my parents keep pressuring me to figure out what I’m going to do and I always stress out over it.
@pointelessness I’d like to self study AP Psych too in order to free up a period for AP Gov. Unfortunately, I’m already taking a summer school class. Is it worth it to take it perhaps during the school year? I’m a little worried as Pre Calc Honors and our Spanish 2 Accelerated class are notorious for being difficult.
Grades are due today, straight A+’s! Pretty excited.
@pointelessness personally I thought I knew what I wanted to do (pediatrician) since starting middle school, but after exploring more careers and interests it gave me a wider view than most of the traditionally “successful” jobs/majors an I found something that I knew I would love doing everyday. I think the best thing to do is to explore different career paths and majors as much as possible and not stress if you don’t find exactly what you’re expecting to. we are only freshman, and even lots of seniors go into college as an undecided major and don’t figure out what they want to major in until the end of freshman/sophomore year of college. so I would just say try everything & don’t stress too much.
I’ve done a few MUNs. I usually go in with a page of bullet points about what I’m supposed to represent and go from there. For your first time just learn the ropes and you don’t have to get super involved. I do suggest getting involved in resolution writing.
Does anyone who has successfully self studied or taken AP Psych know how much of a time dedication it is? I’m hoping to potentially balance it with my schedule next year. If possible, what resources did you use and how did you study? I’m hoping that if I choose to self study it I get at least a 4 or a 5 (preferably a 5).
Also, @FlameAlchemist and @pointelessness, how do you two really get good at writing? I tried a shot at the New York Times Editorial and pretty much failed. Also, it’s a little late for any more competitions now right? I think I’m decent at writing, because I’m one of the two students that got an A+ in our English class out of the whole Freshman class, but I don’t really know how to really set up a plot and engage the writer. In other words, I’m more of an aspiring writer with proficiency in English than an “actual” writer.
@wontonandrice edX.org has a course in AP Psych by UBC. I studied whenever I could for like five six months.
@AtomicMan576 So it’s quite a hefty dedication. About how long per day? Sorry if I’m being so pushy.
@FlameAlchemist I checked the YoungArts program you recommended, and it looks like they require an applicant to be 15. However, I’m only 14, and it’ll be nearly a semester into Sophomore Year before I turn 15. Thanks for recommending it to me though, I’ll ask to see if they can maybe make an exception ;).
@pointelessness Honestly, I’m sort of the opposite of well-rounded. My grades are lousy (by CC standards), and I’m so bad at sports that the Volleyball captain begged me not to join the team. At this point, my only chance in college admissions is a hook. I’m hoping to become a fairly accomplished writer by the end of high school (and I’m really, really hoping to publish a novel by then). My life dream is to become a famous writer, which explains why I’m not very well-rounded. Anyhow, as for Interlochen, I would go, but my parents won’t let me. They don’t want me to leave home for a boarding school (which really sucks because my Mom, and the rest of her family going way, way back, all attended Andover).
@wontonandrice Don’t worry too much about contests. They’re really subjective. For Scholastics, two of my stories made it to Nationals. The worse one won a gold medal, and the better won a silver. As for setting up a plot and engaging the reader, it really depends on what you’re writing. I’ve been writing novels for a while (which doesn’t meant that they’re any good), so I had a lot of trouble coming up with plot ideas for a short story. The best way to learn this stuff, however, is just to read a lot and write a lot. And don’t worry about not being an ‘actual’ writer! You might not be technically a professional writer until your work is published, but to my mind, any aspiring writer who keeps writing even if it’s hard for the sake of writing is an actual writer.
@FlameAlchemist Ok, two of them making it to Nationals is huge. If you don’t mind, could you pm me your works? I can barely write and yet I’m relying on it :(.
@FlameAlchemist Sorry for flooding your inbox! I checked the website again, and I missed the key word “or.” I can apply now, since I will be in 10th grade at December. Is the program more for experienced writers and accomplished ones or beginners without a lot of writing achievements?
Edit: nvm, looks like I don’t have much of a chance based on its description.
@wontonandrice I don’t know, ten to thirty minutes. Some days I didn’t work through it at all, some days I did like two hours.
Anyways, getting into the “writing” discussion that’s occurring right now, what genre do y’all write? I used to write epic fantasy, I stopped now lmao.
Unfortunately, I have to work on some of my projects for a while because I put them off for so long but later I will be going out for a celebration. :))
