@AtomicMan576 I used to write a fanfic about Dragon Ball back in sixth grade that garnered only about 100 or so followers. It was very cringeworthy, and terrible to be honest. I started writing some fantasy, but I think realistic fiction will be the way to go for me.
Does anyone here usually enter with art instead of writing. That’s what I was planning to do for the next contest in September.
@wontonandrice LOL same. I wrote a Sherlock fanfiction and got like 8000 views and 250 likes. It’s so bad I can’t even bear to read it.
@clo2021 By contest are you referring to the Scholastic Arts one I’ve heard so much about? I never heard of it until now, but I think that, given the competition and requirements, I’d enter with one of my drawings too.
@AtomicMan576 haha i used to write fanfiction as well - only ever published one or two, though, and they were actually pretty decent. i think only one of them is still online, and it’s an Adventure Zone fic. i still read a ton of it, though (btw quick poll, assuming you guys also still read fanfic, what site do you use? i’m an AO3 gal all the way).
while writing isn’t a hook of mine per se, i have written a bit of scifi in the past, and it’s always been a dream of mine to publish a science fiction novel
@chrysalism AO3 is the best website by far to write and read fanfic on.
@wontonandrice take what during the school year?
@destinedforND thanks for your advice! I take it it that your dream school is Notre Dame?
@wontonandrice Haha, I’m not sure. I came to arts school writing fiction, but now I’m more of a poetry person. I think I’ll send some of my work to Scholastic this coming year.
@FlameAlchemist Haha, my grades are also pretty terrible by CC standards (which are SO high, by the way). Congratulations on your achievements in writing! I’m sorry they won’t let you go off to boarding school. May I ask why?
Oooh, and I was wondering. What are y’all’s dream schools? Mine’s Princeton, lmao. I’ll never get in.
@pointelessness AP Psych.
Art School and Boarding School? Holy crap, my parents could never afford those. My cousin did go to Andover, so there’s that lol.
Anyone planning on taking the IB junior year?
(or taking MYP now, for that matter.)
@wontonandrice I think it is, because I’m taking second semester AP Psych in the fall! We can be AP Psych buddies lolol. Also, Interlochen is an arts boarding school that is VERY VERY VERY (I can’t stress this enough) generous with financial aid.
what do u guys think of the Bio Sat?
@wontonandrice Just so you know, I’m making the age limit by a day or so. I was freaking out earlier because I thought I wouldn’t get to do it, but luckily I can. You just have to be fifteen before December first, and my fifteenth birthday is in late , late November. And yeah, I’ll totally PM you my works! They’re also online on the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards Galleries if you want to check them out there later.
@pointelessness My parents mostly won’t let me go because they don’t want me to leave home that early, which is something I can sort of get, even if I think it’s horrendously unfair. My Mom also said that while boarding school for her was amazing, it ruined the college experience for her, as college was easier than Andover had been.
As for what I write, pretty much any kind of fiction (except romance/erotica). I tend to focus in my novels on science fiction and fantasy, and in my short stories on realistic. The reason I focus on realistic in short stories is because I tend to go all out in world-building for my Epic Fantasies and Sci-fi books, which you can’t really do in a short story. I’m currently in the middle of an Epic Fantasy novel about a band of seven heroes (destined to become known as the notorious villains who destroy magic and everything that comes with it forever) who reluctantly set out on a quest to save a bunch of wimpy royal children from a mysterious being known as the Elf King. It should tell you something about my stories when the least messed up of my seven heroes is the depressed alcoholic minstrel with a guilt complex.
@FlameAlchemist Please PM me some of your works. I really want to see how I can improve my writing.
Nice idea for fantasy fiction, sounds like a pretty cool plot. I remember writing some, but I don’t enjoy the world building aspect that’s sorta mandatory for a good fantasy novel, so I kind of lost interest
Hi all! So for an AP exam, I forgot to bubble in answers on my answer sheet. I filed an incident report, but I’m still scared that it won’t be graded. I know i did good enough to get a 4 or a 5 if they graded the answers from the workbook, but if not, it’s a 3 or a 2. I’m so scared. But I was told I could cancel the exam if I wanted to. What do you think? Should I cancel?
Another thing, For next year’s schedule, I have a dilemma. In my school, theres a program called AICE - Advanced international Cambridge Examination, and there’s honors classes. There is only one AP class, which I took this year. So I’m not into the Aice classes, but If I take honors my rank would go down seeing as I’m ranked 1 out of 700. My guidance counselor told me that I couldn’t take AP courses because they would put a ‘strain’ on me since I am also dual enrolling, but I was told by my teacher that I should take AP stats online because universities like to see progression, and guidance put 4 Aice classes on my schedule that I didn’t ask for. The thing is, the school has already ran out of classes for me to take, so AICE is the only thing that can fill my schedule unless I take double block medical, which is not allowed until 11th grade. I’m so confused right now because AICE is useless out of state, and AP is gone in my school, no IB either, and guidance said no online classes. I can’t graduate next year because I wouldnt be able to keep my rank and I need to complete a half year of P.E… What should I do?
@Nkemdirim I suggest not worrying about keeping your rank when dealing with this, it is an important factor that needs to be considered but you don’t have to be #1.
@FlameAlchemist Also, I think the YoungArts says “or”. That works for me! I’m definitely a Sophomore in early December.
hey guys this is my (possible) schedule for next year. I’m aiming high (possibly the ivies) so please tell me is my schedule is rigorous enough.
Full year:
Physical education
Algebra 2
Honors English (the only honors class my school offers)
Ap World history
Chemistry (so I can take Ap chem as a junior)
First semester
TEAL (a computer science course)
Mulitimedia ( I just think it’ll be fun to take this)
Second semester
Principles of creative writing
Digital photography (I think this will be fun too)
Extra curriculars ig??
Advanced science research program at my school that starts at 7:30 am everyday. Really hard to get in but I know someone from the admissions committee that said she’s in my favor Is a 3 year program that gives 12 college credits (in total) and 6 high school credits ( in total)
Brown Scholars program at the American museum of natural history (another research program). After school on Monday’s and Wednesday’s. Also very competitive but my interview went very well. I’ll hear back from them by the second week of June.
I can take college courses at the local community college on weekends. ( I’ll get credits for it) I’ve already been accepted I’m just deciding whether or not to go.
I’ll have Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays free after school with that time I could…
Volunteer at a hospital or animal shelter
Or
Join the schools robotics team (they are really good like… national competitions good.)
Or
Go to a SALTZ internship it’s in Tuesday’s and Thursday’s idek if I’ll get accepted or if I would want to go…
Or
Look into other programs
Or
Just have that time free
I got a 96+ on all my classes this year (except for PE where I got a 76)
I was thinking about self studying courses but I read an article saying many colleges may think you’re doing that just to sway them. Plus all the classes that are easy to self study (such as AP psych) tip colleges don’t even offer credits for. (Idk tho, I haven’t decided)
This summer I’m going to Korea but next summer I’m hoping to go to a good summer program (such as COSMOS) tell me about my schedule and give me advice!! Thanks ( and sorry it’s so long).
@Potter3846 Considering the classes available, I’d say rigorous enough.
If PE counts into your GPA then you might want to bring it up a little next year.
@wontonandrice it does, and I definitely will. What do you think I should do for the extracurriculars.
@Potter3846 I’m not sure what your major is, and I’m not as knowledgeable on extracurriculars as the others here. Personally, I’d get a measure of how well you can balance yourself. I also think that with a C already, you’d need to have incredible ECs, or try for a 4.0 GPA for the next three years. It may sound intimidating, but you can definitely do it. Push yourself to the limits, but don’t go too far. Since PE counts into your GPA, maybe add in a little morning jog or push up set into your summer day. As for extracurriculars, I’d just say pursue what interests you.
