High School Class of 2021

@wontonandrice what do you mean by major?
Also they don’t grade you by how fit you are, I only got a low grade in PE cause I skipped that class a lot but next year I’ll go to PE.

Sorry to interject here but so many things have happened lately and I need to rant.

The Where Will I Go To School Next Year Debacle

In April, my best friend committed suicide due to the stress of attending TJHSST. This…broke me. I have been depressed for years (chill I have a psychiatrist) and have PTSD from the horrors I experienced in elementary and middle school. The schools in my district all look exactly the same and being in one of the schools triggers my PTSD. After multiple panic attacks caused by minor issues at school, my psychiatrist finally decided that it was time for me to get out.

My parents and I looked into online options so I would not have to go to a brick-and-mortar school. In Virginia, it is literally not possible for anyone with a GPA over 3.0 to do online school. So we looked into private schools. They were all too expensive or way too religious. I then remembered the little, third-tier college that had reached out to me in January. I deferred back then, but decided to apply now. We’ll see what happens with that in late July/ early August after I take the ACT on July 14th (anyone else taking it then?)

The Schedule Debacle

With so many new graduation requirements and regulations, I ended up having no idea what I would take next year if I didn’t go to college early. After being told that I can’t take PE online this summer after paying $795 to do it, this is the schedule my counselor has formulated for me:

AP World History
Research Chemistry Honors
Mathematical Analysis Honors
Study Hall (Uggggggghhh why again?)
English 10 Honors
Latin 4 Honors
AP Biology
Health and PE/ Driver’s Ed 10 (this class is awful but I do get to learn how to drive)

Certainly after next year, I will drop out of high school, get my GED, and go to college. There’s no way they’ll make me stay right? Right? RIGHT?

Oh no, the counselor decides to make my 4 Year Plan as I sit there, watching her think she knows me. So, Junior Year, I guess:

AP US History
AP Chemistry
AP Calculus BC
Study Hall (god I hate this concept)
AP Language
Latin 5 Honors
AP Psychology
AP Macro/Microeconomics
Online AP Physics 1 and 2

And also Senior Year (good Lord why would she make this)

AP US and Comparative Government
AP Physics C
Multivariable Calculus
Study Hall (still completely idiotic)
AP Literature
AP Latin
AP Human Geography
AP Statistics

So obviously, that isn’t happening. I don’t have to go to med school anymore, so I can go to law school after my bachelor’s now. Why in the world would I want to take AP Physics C or Multivariable Calculus? I want to do Economics and International Affairs. Why would AP Physics 1 and 2 be necessary for that?

A couple good things happened I guess. I got chosen to be in the Young Women’s Leadership Program with Barbara Comstock and I might actually get to leave high school this year. Pretty cool.

I guess if you read nothing else, I’ll sum it up: I have no idea if I’m going to high school or college next year; if I do go to high school, my schedule is so painfully easy I can just skate like I did this year (All A+'s, except a 97 in math); my guidance counselor sucks; I’m taking the ACT in the middle of summer; I have no friends; and I learned how to use semicolons in studying for the ACT.

Any comments or advice would be great.

Non-native English speaker disclaimer. I apologize for any grammatical or spelling errors

@Potter3846 Sorry I meant college major. I think they’d want your interests to reflect your major in some way. Try not to skip it next year. If your lower grade in PE was because of a severe circumstance than I’d try to tell colleges when applying.

@bwhs2021
Wow, sorry for commenting after you posted. For some reason I didn’t see your post. The only thing I can really offer to be honest is my prayers. I know how useless it is, but I definitely don’t think I’m qualified enough to help. You seem to be very intelligent. I’m sure that you’ll be fine. Managing to maintain close to Straight A+'s (however easy you claim your high school is) is definitely no small feat considering your situation. I don’t know what I can do to help as a random stranger on the Internet. Pm me if you need anything.

@bwhs2021 that’s sucks. But even if they do make your 4 year plan for you, you could still drop out. I’m obviously not saying you should, but that’s not something that could stop you. You should also talk to her and say how you actually feel about that schedule, maybe it’s just my school but they let us choose our own schedule (even tho there’s not too many options)

@wontonandrice I still don’t know what I would like to major in in college but something definitely science related. I’m aiming to get into RSI. Which has been called the “golden ticket” for ivies so I guess we’ll see.

Update guys!!! I got accepted to the brown scholars program!!! I’m honestly so proud of myself cause this is one step closer to my goal. ;))

Edit: my bad I thought it was the summer program

Hi! There’s something called Florida Virtual Schools (accessible from all states). You do NOT have to enroll full-time, but rather as part of the FLVS Flex program. My step-brother just finished high school at 15 since he finished all his pre-reqs. Consult w/ your college counselor as to what yours are, so you can matriculate into a 4-year bachelor’s program right after. Best of luck!!! @bwhs2021

@clo2021 it’s literally a free program for minorities and they even pay us during the second year so how would they make money from that?? Also the get hundreds of applicants and only accept a total of 40 people…

Edit: I just read your edit never mind

@lumen3141 We contacted the Virginia Department of Education and they only accept Virtual Virginia as an accredited online institution. The only people who can enroll in Virtual Virginia full-time are those who have been improperly served by their home school and have a GPA of 3.0 at the highest. To be classified as home-schooled, you must register with a curriculum and grading procedure 18 months before you begin teaching your child. The bureaucratic red tape of Virginia makes my day every time.

:frowning:

Does Virtual Virginia have a “flex” program, in which it’s not full-time and you choose what classes you take. You could do this throughout the course of the next (and hopefully final) year of high school. Do you know how many credits you have now? Refer to the chart here (http://www.pen.k12.va.us/instruction/graduation/credit_accommodations.shtml). See what sciences, math(s), and whatever else you have to take. Dual enrollment over the summer also counts some. @bwhs2021

Any tips on writing an essay introducing yourself and describing your extracurriculars? I don’t want to me too generic, but I’m also not sure on how to really make it unique while describing all my extracurriculars.

@Prunetree It wasn’t too bad… I know I missed one question because I checked the answer right after I left my testing center. I literally chose the right answer then changed it seconds before the test ended!! Like how stupid is that?
Anyway how did it go for you?

@wontonandrice @FlameAlchemist would love to share work with you guys!

@Potter3846 your schedule is really impressive! Congratulations on your acceptance!

@bwhs2021 I’m sorry to hear that! I can’t be of any help, unfortunately, but if you ever need anyone to talk to I’m right here. You have a friend in me

@pointelessness thank you. I still don’t know what I’m going to do on the other days, what do you recommend?

@pointelessness I’m working on a short story right now! I’m definitely down. A little worried that it’s either melodramatic or not developed properly.

@pointelessness I’d totally be interested in sharing stories! Tell me if you want me to PM you my Scholastic ones. I’d also be really interested in reading some of your stories! My school has literally no other high school writers (it’s a K-12 school with around 100 students), so I’d be interested in communicating with some others.

I just found out that I was a finalist in an essay competition through the human rights organization in my state. I know I’m in the top 5 for high school students but I have to read my essay for the judges and answer questions. I never considered myself a good writer so this is super exciting.

May I also join in this … exchange? @FlameAlchemist @pointelessness

@Potter3846 I think you should just stop for a minute and see what you actually want to do with that time. If you free it up, will you be productive?

@wontonandrice @FlameAlchemist @AtomicMan576 is group PM a thing on CC?

@birdbear Congratulations!! Even if I don’t know you, I’m so proud.
