Oh lol, sorry @Bobbybob444555 I assumed you were in class of 2021 since you were posting in this thread XD, and it’s fine I am taking geometry in 8th grade.
@Bobbybob444555 Yeah, I wasn’t planning on take geometry over the summer or doubling up sophomore year.
Idk why the class of 2020 thread is dead, and it’s ok @stanford200381 not taking calculus in hs, maybe your planned career path doesn’t even need calculus.
@Bobbybob444555 this thread is pretty dead too. My planned career path does need calculus so I really do need to take it in hs.
@stanford200381 you could take precalculus in 12th and take calc in college, nothing wrong with that.
@Bobbybob444555 Most people accepted to Stanford take calculus in hs.
@stanford200381 well, you can’t rely on being accepted to Stanford.
@Bobbybob444555 Obviously not, but I why wouldn’t i try my hardest at least?
What extracurriculars are you guys doing next year?
I’m planning on doing robotics team, key club, student council ( hopefully president or Vice President), student ambassador, junior varsity track, and volunteering at a hospital.
Enjoy your last remaining time in middle school before beginning your descent to hell.
@moosicnerd hs isn’t exactly a lot different from ms. Teachers don’t really care and I feel that has benefited me.
tip for you guys:
- don’t get hung up on going to top tier schools (ivies and whatnot)
- do your homework
- time management is essential
- don’t rely on ‘friends’ freshman year (most people become fake going into high school).
- don’t think a B or an A- is a bad grade
yeah that’s all i could think of for now, good luck in high school-- it’s one hell of a ride.
@studying4seoul not really, hs is better than ms. Teachers in hs don’t really care what you do in class. My advice: listen to lectures and get work done quick
@Bobbybob444555 I could disagree greatly. You haven’t seen it all- high school is more than the classes and the teachers. It is evident that you have not see the ‘fakeness’ people carry with them. High school is much more exhausting than middle school and in my opinion- worse. People are bullied a lot more in high school than in middle school. In middle school I was mentally healthy and then high school came along (especially sophomore year) I am at my lowest point (mental health wise). Once you see it firsthand you will change your mind.
D is going to Stanford next year. It is good of you to start now. Your group of friends is really important, your inner circle must be fellow students who have great study habits, do their homework, can communicate effectively and really focus on tests. All of D’s friends are headed to top 20 schools next year. Make sure you do not associate with any slackers. HS is no cakewalk compared to JHS, there will be many many nights of three or four hours of sleep. Junior year my D had zero period starting at 6:30 am to band and debate after school. Every weekend was devoted to long term projects or ECs.
It is never too early to look at the kind of questions on the SAT or ACT. Check out what clubs are available to join once in HS. Join NHS as quickly as you can and every other honor society you can. Plan to create a club and run it all four years. Read challenging books to become a better writer. If your starting this early then my guess is you will be in the top 5%. There are thousands of applicants like you that will apply to the top tier schools, what you write in the essays will make or break you like it did for my D essays for Stanford. D’s passion and hunger for learning was well written from the heart.
Get all A’s at the most challenging courses available at your HS because they will be comparing you to your fellow classmates. Check to see if your HS is highly competitive compared to other HS in the area. Go to the most demanding HS in your area if you have a choice. Do really well on the PSAT your junior year because NMF is riding on it and you get only one chance. Score really well in one sitting on the SAT or ACT, looks really good when you only need to take it once.
Check our the admitted profile of students at college web sites. That will give you a peek at who your up against when it is your time. Four years of HS will go by quickly. I know it sounds daunting but take it one day at a time and develop great time management skills and one day you will have a choice between choosing and IVY school or Stanford.
Good luck.
@studying4seoul I see what you’re coming from. There’s barely any violence or fighting in my school. It’s true there’s a ton of fake people in hs, but there’s nothing you can do about that. There’s bullying so that’s why you hang out with other people. Just like the ocean when fish are in groups to not be eaten.
@gr8pl8 I’m not Class of 2021 (2020 woot woot!) but this was great advice, thanks!
@gr8pl8 Yes this was great advice, thank you so much.
senior here! as i’m on my way out of high school and you guys are on your way in, i just wanted to give yall some advice:
-
find a good balance between academics, sleep, extracurriculars, and social life. the second and last parts are very important–please don’t neglect them in pursuit of a 4.0 and stellar ecs.
-
if you haven’t had to study in middle school (like i did), please try to start working on finding a way to study in high school that works for you!
-
it’s not too early to start thinking about college, but that doesn’t mean it’s healthy or good to obsess over making yourself into the perfect applicant. take the classes you like but challenge yourself. hang out with your friends but don’t neglect your work. do extracurriculars you like and try to stick with them (aim for a leadership position if you can!).
-
keep good habits freshman year. even if it’s easy and the classes are boring, don’t fall into bad habits of procrastinating and not taking notes in class!! from experience, i know it’s hard to break out of them especially as classes get harder.
this is really all the advice i have for now (and tbh it’s kinda repetitive), but i hope yall take it to heart.
edit: advice from a friend: “Advice to freshmeat: onli do stuff to get inta good college (aka only harvard)” -> sarcasm lol
-find some way to keep in touch with other kids on here! create a groupchat or something on a social media platform.
-when thinking about college don’t get hung up on a dream school. also try to apply to schools that you like (yes, try to find a ‘safety’ school that you like).
-reddit’s r/applyingtocollege is also a good resource but it’ll be mostly senior/junior dominated
(edit #2: sorry this is so long i got carried away)
The keeping in touch thing is actually a pretty good idea because maybe it come in handy in the future. Especially because there’s no profile pictures, it would be cool to know who you guys are. My instagram is @abs.kelsay if anyone is with me on this and wants to start a group chat
