High School Class of 2021

Sure sounds good to me, I requested you. @AbsKelsay

hey guys. Figured it might be helpful to get involved in this thread bcs I need a place to stress about the next four years of my life… Does anybody else feel like they need to plan out every class and elective and club that they will be a part of for the next four years? Maybe I’m crazy. I’m going to a competitive boarding school next year and am kinda terrified because I never studied once in middle school… Guess I’ll have to adjust.

On Friday I bought an SAT book out of sheer curiosity, and I have no idea how I’m gonna get even a mediocre score. I did really well on the SSAT (boarding school admissions exam - the SAT for high school) but the SAT seems way harder. I honestly have no clue how I’ll get to the point where I can take that test successfully within the next 20+ years. After reading this I’m realizing that I have a lot more anxiety than I previously thought… huh.

@“Nico.campbell” you need to relax, after taking algebra 2 the math section seems pretty easy. For the other portion, you just have to read and practice.

@“Nico.campbell” No need to stress out, we have 3 years to learn the material on the SAT. You have to remember we are only 8th graders we haven’t even taken hs classes and if we have only a few. Just work hard and you will do fine.

I know I need to chill :)) I’m not necessarily stressing about it I’m just not sure how I’m gonna get to that point in the next three years. We’ll see B-) . Thanks guys

I’m taking algebra 2 as a freshman and the math section looks really easy. There’s some questions on geometry but they’re pretty simple.

^ Same. Luckily Algebra’s pretty easy, but I struggled with Geometry…

Wow, everyone has been giving such great advice!

But I have this extended question…I should probably make my own thread for it, but I’ll ask here anyway.
My main EC is Science Olympiad, and the school that I’m going to is #1 in it, in the state, is is constantly placing top 10 in the nation. The problem is, it’s going to be very time consuming if I manage to get on the team, and I might not have time for other clubs. Also I’m quite worried about ECs in general because I literally have 0 ECs and major accomplishments outside of Science Olympiad (besides maybe art), while my peers have played in Carnegie hall, going to internships at the National Institute of Health and top universities, playing competitive sports, is in a high school level drum corps, while also playing instruments AND doing ALL of the ECs that I’m doing…while probably performing better in school. I just feel generally inferior, and I’m not very used to it since I was always that “top” student in elementary school, and middle school, but now in 8th grade I just feel like I’m not doing enough…point being, what should I even do as ECs…?

@raventhemage You have your summers, right? Can you maybe get a job or internship over the summer? personally, I think if you are really involved in scioly and can get a leadership position sometime, that can help you a lot! when filling out college apps, i found that ecs came in handy the most when writing essays and such.

but besides that, art is a nice skill you can put on there!! it’ll round out your application a little more. i think your best bet is either to ease up a little on classes and lighten your workload so you can fit in another ec, or try to find ecs you can do over the summer or for a short time per week. (the common app asks how much time per week you spend on an ec so they’ll know you put lots of effort into scioly!)

Hey guys, I really need your help/advice. So I really wanted to join the robotics team next year but just found out that meetings are 5-10pm the problem is that I’m also in track which usually doesn’t end until 4:45pm. I’m not willing to give up track but I really want to join the robotics team but this would leave no time for studying, homework, or a life outside of school and extracurriculars. What should I do? How do you guys manage time, I wouldn’t even be able to do other extracurriculars like HPAC, Key club, volunteering, and etc.

Honestly, just drop robotics club because while it sounds like fun now, you would be too busy with school and track to enjoy it. You’re better off sticking with track but I’m sort of biased because I’m in track too lol

@stanford200381

Let’s start by asking, which one do you think you’ll love to do more? If you enjoy robotics and are interested in it more than track, do robotics (I know robotics teams such as VEX and FIRST can often be very competitive, since the two high schools in my district have very good teams in both). If you enjoy track more than robotics, do track, since being in varsity sports and being captains also has a huge benefit.

However, I know it’s not that simple. You might enjoy both around equally and you are not willing to give one of them up. Best case scenario is that you do both and end up with other good ECs like the ones you mentioned, as well as doing well in school, but if you get home at 10 everyday…well that seems like a far shot. I don’t doubt that robotics club meets everyday, since competitive teams do often meet everyday for extended periods of time.

If you were to do both, it seems like you’d get home at 10, maybe get 3-4 hours of homework, so that means you’d get to sleep at around 2am (including things like eating, showering, etc.) This schedule is terrible and won’t work out, so let’s see what we can accomplish.

A possibility is that one day you go to track and the other day you go to robotics club, but this is not always possible since attendance is key to success in either one, OR you could just go to half of robotics club, since it’s five hours long, and get home early.

As for general time management, not really relating to robotics vs track, I do have a few tips and pointers.

  1. Write down all of your assignments in a to-do order, this has helped me because I just feel satisfied with crossing something else, and it’s good to see how much work I still have to do that day. Sometimes I even assign “rewards” for completing something, like if I finish this worksheet I get a cookie…
  2. Don’t waste your time. This seems like common sense, but the amount of time spent on checking your phone, replying to texts, posting on instagram, etc. is substantial. Try using ColdTurkey or an equivalent on your computer.
  3. When you have time, take advantage of it. Many people in my school don’t use their study hall, and just play games instead, but study hall is actually a phenomenal opportunity to get work done before you get home. Also if you have a long bus ride you could also get a worksheet or two done there.
    That’s all I can think of for now.

@Faultystart

Thank you so much for the advice! I’m already doing summer school for the entire summer (taking Biology H) and looking for a volunteer position at either my local zoo or natural history museum (I probably won’t get in though…), and possibly just every week at an animal shelter or soup kitchen if I can’t get into those.

I do hope to become captain of the science olympiad team during sometime in junior or senior year, and I’m really hoping I can make the team freshmen year, since I know it’s possible if you work really hard, but… I guess I just feel like I need more variation in my extracurriculars.

At this point I don’t even have a question asking anyone, but just putting a statement out there.

@raventhemage Thank you! Yes our schools FIRST robotics club is very competitive so they are required to do the full 5 hours, I’ve been in track for two years and I love running so I’ll Just have to forget about robotics club. I supposed it’s not that big of a deal since my school has us take robotics classes sinces it’s STEM based.

what are y’all planning to do over the summer?

I’m going to volunteer at the children’s museum here but other than that I don’t really know. I’m probably just gonna hang out and work on some coding projects on my own

@pldmua2003 I’m just volunteering at the hospital, preparing for next years courses, and going to Florida.

Wow I’m not doing anything except traveling. I’m planning some things to do next summmer: probably community college courses and/or a community service organization type thing. I figure that this is my last summer to do nothing for the next couple of years.

I believe I already answered this earlier up in this thread, but I’m going to do Biology H in summer school, volunteer at either the natural history museum or the zoo (or maybe the animal shelter), but that’s going to be determined when they mail back my application results for the natural history museum… at the end of August I’ll be visiting my grandparents in China. Yeah, that’s about it.

@Nico.campbell same here, I’m a freshman. I was going to take an English course at a CC but then found out I was traveling.

When does school end for everyone? My last day is May 31st.
