High School GPA for Engineering

What kind of gpa is good for the engineering program?
Weighted,unweighted,100 scale, anything you got. I know they work on many factors, including the classes themselves, but this is just a big gap in my understanding for applying. I'm already an automatic admit from texas, it's just about the engineering college.

stats:
Texas
SAT: 710 math,720 CR,560 writing. I'll be retesting later
GPA:3.57(4.0) or 4.67 or 91%
class rank 23 percentile

Off topic, but how important is it you take Calculus I before the program? I'll probably take it at a nearby college the summer after senior year.

woohoo,first post on the site

If you stay in the top 25% (just focus for one more semester because you’re barely safe) and apply early, you’ll get in as an Academic Admit (no reason to retake really).

The only specific thing the engineering program requires is a 550 Math score.

I personally forgot all about taking the SAT, so I was finally accepted the day the scores were sent out which was AFTER my major filled up in October.

Their Engineering Honors program requires you to be in the top 10% ([Engineering Scholars Program - Honors | Certificate Programs | Academics | College of Engineering](http://engineering.tamu.edu/academics/certificates/eh)).

Their University Honors program judges mostly on the essays you write for their essay prompts (http://honors.tamu.edu/Honors/Applying.html</a>).

I personally did not apply because the University Honors program requires you to live in more expensive dorms your first year. Also if you really wanted to get the Honors Fellow recognition, you could later apply as a continuing student.

Apparently, A&M got a new and tougher math exam creator, so some would agree that taking math (and even physics) at a CC would be the smarter choice.

Of course, you may be less prepared for the rigors of A&M’s engineering program by not taking their weed-out courses.

You will be required to take the Math Placement Test regardless of whether you already have any math credits or not.

Thank you, that was insightful. I hate essays and language,so I probably won’t get into the Honors program, but who knows. Oh,and this might be helpful:
Planned Senior Year:
Eng 4 AP
Stats AP or French 4 AP or intro to Engineering reg or something else (still deciding)
pre-Calculus pre AP or Calculus AP(taking reg pre-cal over summer)
Comp Sci 2 AP
Engineering internship
Gov AP/Econ AP
Physics AP

Is calculus tested on the Math Placement exam? I might end up taking pre-cal and calculus twice each just to make sure I REALLY get it.

Also, what about GPA? Am I in a good place?shaky?safe?

Your GPA doesn’t really matter as long as you’re in the Top 25%.

As DumbArse (lol) said, A&M got a harder math exam creator this year. I have firsthand experience with this since I took Calc 1 last Fall. I’d definitely recommend that you take Calculus at your High School/CC before you take it here, just so you come in with some prior knowledge. It’s not an impossible class here, but it’d definitely be difficult without some prior knowledge.

Here are past exams:
[MATH 151 Common Exam Archive, Department of Mathematics, Texas A&M University](MATH 151 Common Exam Archive, Department of Mathematics, Texas A&M University)

Ignore all the exams except for the Fall 2012 ones, since those are by a different exam creator that no longer writes the exams, and are a lot easier than the new ones.

I kind of just assumed the engineering college was into purging like general admittance. So, if I’m accepted to the college, the engineering college will probably take me too? I always hear how competitive the engineering program is and ow fast it fills up-but I guess that is just because they work on first come first serve rule?

What I’m asking is, should I not worry that much about the getting into the engineering program if I am an automatic admit and submit early? Since I meat the SAT pre-requisites. I sort of thought it was a second hurdle to cross after already being accepted. Then maybe I can focus on grades and stop freaking out until summer.

Ohh yeah I forgot that just because you’re an automatic admit doesn’t mean that you’ll get the college of your choice…hm.

Honestly, I think you’re fine though. Your math and reading score on the SAT are above average, and yeah if you apply early you should definitely be in.

No need to worry about the SAT your Math and CR scores are strong and TAMU doesn’t even look at the writing section. As long as you stay an auto admit and you apply early you will get your major. Early applications are critical for popular majors.

It definitely helps to take Calc prior to starting the program. This will help both with the calc class and with physics.

https://mathplacement.tamu.edu/precal-cas/</a></p>

You’re currently shaky to be in the 23% and with only one semester to go.
Senior year grades don’t matter. They ask you to provide your senior schedule just for kicks.

As someone who is taking half-days (classes end at 10:23) for her senior year, I recommend the following:

-There is no need to spend time/money on summer classes if you simply spend more effort in your future pre-calc/calc classes. You could even do [TAMU Personalized Precalculus Program](http://nsfstep.math.tamu.edu/) and/ or [MATH 151 Suggested Homework, Department of Mathematics, Texas A&M University](MATH 151 Suggested Homework, Department of Mathematics, Texas A&M University) while taking Calc.

-But yes, take AP Calc and AP Phys C unless the teachers/classes suck. I would recommend self-studying for AP Phys C: E&M if your school doesn’t offer it too JUST to avoid taking it at A&M.

-If you detest writing as much as I do, there is no need to take AP Eng. You could just spend more time at A&M’s writing center to improve your writing skills if you need to. With a CR score of 720, there is not need to worry about your reading skills.

-AP Stats/AP French credits may not satisfy any of your required courses. If you’re not going to minor in French, those credits might just help to get up to 60 credits (junior classification). Just look up your degree plan and use http://biomed.tamu.edu/academics/undergraduate/documents/AP-IB/AP.pdf</a> as a guide. Self-study any other exams that might make your future uni course load lighter.

-I personally used <a href=“Texas A&M University - Transfer Course Equivalency System”>Howdy Security Block; and took CC classes that would transfer/could be transferred.

-AP Comp Sci may prepare you for a required Comp Sci course? But for some reason, I doubt it.

-Engineering internships at this stage may not benefit you much compared to internships provided by A&M, but it will be something extra to put on your resume if you plan to work as an engineer.

-AP Gov credits fulfill the POLS 206 requirement, and AP Econ credits fulfill the Social and Behavioral Scinces requirement according to [Texas A&M University 09-10 Undergraduate Catalog](http://catalog.tamu.edu/09-10_UG_Catalog/gen_info/university_core_curriculum/specific_requirements.htm).

-You could take the POLS 207 test ([Data and Research Services - Departmental Credit by Exam](http://dars.tamu.edu/Testing/Departmental-Credit-by-Examination)). You could also take the DANTES Art of the Western World test ([Texas A&M University 09-10 Undergraduate Catalog](http://catalog.tamu.edu/09-10_UG_Catalog/gen_info/admissions/course_credit/dantes.htm)) by studying [Amazon.com: Buying Choices: ART OF THE WESTERN WORLD From Ancient Greece to Post Modernism](http://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/B000X6OPX4/ref=sr_1_2_up_1_main_olp?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1357182092&sr=1-2&condition=used) well.

-If you seriously want to stress out, go crazy about doing calc and physics problems in textbooks. Personally, I’m just like why… when you could simply chill now and put more energy into your upper-level courses at A&M later. Of course, this is coming from someone who neither has an impressive HS nor college record and sleeps most of the day.

If SAT is done with, then Class Rank will become my only remaining focus, think I can stay in top 25%(although it’d be incredibly depressing if I found out otherwise)

I know senior grades don’t matter, that’s why my courses are all AP and difficult. It’s okay to get C’s now. I can start actually learning. All the classes(except AP Phys) sound fun to me, and are useful.

Taking PreCal in the summer as a pre-requisite to AP Calculus and AP Stats. If I decide to take neither, it will still make PreAp Pre-Calculus easier. Also I’ll have a stronger math foundation. You do raise a good point about the programs, I’ll look into them.

My school does offer it. I can take either Pre-Cal or Calc I senior year. And Calc I or Calc II in CC the summer after. Not sure yet. I don’t want to skim the basics. Senior year I could take AP Physics OR Chem, and while chem could potentially give me more credits, I heard it’s HELL.

I have to take writing, Texas forces 4 years of it. Plus, since grades don’t matter, might as well take the harder one so I improve on my weak point.

I “want” to take French because I already took 3 years of it, and I want to take stats because I heard it’s easy. Not too attached to either class. I thought they would be useful personally. Still not sure which kind of engineering I want to do, probably Electrical. Couldn’t find the degree plan. Thanks for the transfer link.

I just really like Comp Sci. It’s useful is any field I’d go into and just relaxing. Still debating if to go into that engineering.

The internship is yeah, to look pretty. Internships are easy grades and actually learning, not “studying” so far as I’ve heard. Got a lot of questions about engineering, so sounds like a good idea.

Gov and Econ are also required courses in highschool, might as well get the credits out of the way! I didn’t know any of this stuff about POLS, so serious thanks for that. I need more time.

I’m not ********ting when I say I seriously love math, and I hate to be inadequate. Just don’t want to walk in first year and completely fall flat. Plus, harder Math Placement Test.
Although, the more detailed I’m getting into A&M the more depressing it’s going to be if I don’t get in.

Oh, and HUGE thank you for the links.

So are you in A&M Engineering? Any other advice about college, applying, gpa, admission, extra curriculars, essays, classes, the universe, etc you got?

Yes, use myedu.com to plan your schedule before your registration (so you’re prepared when it’s your turn to register and know what classes to get before they fill up), and to scope out the good/bad professors.

So you like links huh

Also if your school offers dual credit classes in English, or history and possibly other subjects if you get a B (80) in those classes you can fulfill some of your requirements without having to worry about the AP test.

Although the B won’t count to your GPA, I read that it will probably show up as “TB” instead of “TA” on your official TAMU transcript though.

On AIS, I saw these majors: CECL - Computer Engr-Computer Science Track, CEEL - Computer Engr-Electrical Engr Track, CPSL - Computer Science, ELEL - Electrical Engineering

Oh derp, my GPA weighted is actually 4.72, if that matters somehow. Also just found out 1430/1600 is 97 percentile

dangerous ego boost

Tried looking through links, but it started spiraling into a dangerous wikiwalk, so I’ll save them for later(also they are scary and intimidatingly blue). I was under the impression the duel credit went to your College GPA. If i’m probably going to get into engineering, I want to focus on actually being better prepared for the rigor than skipping the pre-requisites. Duel credit also seems like a waste of high school hours, with bus time and blank days.

Regardless of how you accomplish it with AP’s or DC classes getting the classes our of the way that are not specifically engineering can lighten your load in the beginning for you to have more time to focus on the rigorous classes that are specifically engineering focused. Unless those classes are a cakewalk for you and an easy GPA boost you will very likely do better without having to worry about them during your freshman year.

Yes, thing like English, Political Science, etc…get them out of the way for sure.

It’s annoying how college classes are represented by a few letters, difficult to figure out what class is what

Core A&M credits:.
COMM-if I get 4’s on 2 years of english AP

MATH - depends on placement exam

SCI -if I get a 3 in physics B

HUMM-european history maybe…?

S SCI -DONE with human geo, excess with econ

ART - in 2-d design, but probably won’t get a good AP score

POLS -3 done with AP gov. Could get another 3 with Comparative government…?

HIST-if I get a 4 in APUSH,which I won’t, haven’t read most of textbook

DIVERSITY-…nothing

Likely won’t have Humanities, Art, Political Science,History, and Diversity credits complete. Probably more.

I have one spare credit senior year
can take a class this summer at college(next summer can’t cuz Calc)
decisions decisions…

potential AP’s:
Art History(usually not available/Art)
Comparative Government(not 100% exists/POLS)
European History(Humanities)

oh, and “Kinesiology”, which I suspect is a fancy way of saying GYM. No way around that one. My school doesn’t have Comparative Government. I also have the option technically to retake a history(WHAP or APUSH) if I really want the credit. So my final credit is between APUSH,WHAP,and AP Euro. Since I’ve taken the first two already(made a 3 in whap, going to make a 2 in apush probably) I could feasibly self study as well, maybe for both, and not even take Euro. The DSST sounds too good to be true, but might as well try it.
