High School Honors Science Program at Michigan State ( HSHSP )

A bunch of us who attended HSHSP last summer are on CC, and I know many would be willing to answer any questions applicants for next year may have.

I would be more than happy to talk about my experiences if desired.

Will they be taking as many from California for the summer of 2014?

Chris, there’s no per-state quota for HSHSP. They may take the same number from CA, or they may take more/less.

Can anyone post the range of gpa, act, sat, psat of this year’s group (to the best of your knowledge)? Just curious, my little brother wants to apply next year

From what I heard, majority had 32+ act (or 2200+ sat) and a lot had perfect/almost perfect scores. However, Dr. Richmond definitely does not disregard your application if your scores are on the low end. There were people who did not have competitive scores and still got in because they had a passion for science (which is more important). Anyone who is seriously interested in an amazing research and camp experience should apply.
I believe StudiousMaximus will have an actual answer to your question, though.

Would 32/2200 be considered “on the low end”? Seems low for a camp that has less than 10% acceptance

Yay Alyssa is still on here :D

StudiousMaximus actually collected a lot of data, so he should be able to answer your question more accurately. But from what I recall seeing on the spreadsheet, most of the participants had a 34 ACT (and equivalent SAT) or above. There were exceptions, but it had nothing to do with their intelligence. One of the girls who had a lower SAT score ended up producing a very Siemens-worthy project.

Once I get around to compiling and analyzing the data, I’ll post it here. I believe I was able to collect objective stats from at least 25 of the 30 participants, so it’s a good sample.

Geography seems to have no bearing on the way people get picked. They picked two students from Miami who live 15 min apart.

^ And three students from Long Island who are also very close (two of them 9 miles apart)

I keep forgetting they all live so close

Hey guys  Quick question: For the application’s reading list, how far back are we supposed to go? Like…am I supposed to list all the books I’ve read since 9th grade, or even more (or less)? Thanks for any help possible!

You are only supposed to include books and magazines you have read during the past year (not since 9th grade). Don’t worry about your list being too short or too long. I don’t think the reading list is a huge factor. You should focus on the essays.

hey guys…
im thinking about applying to hshsp as well as bu rise… i got a 35 on my act but my sat and psat scores arent too hot… am i required to send those? i feel like sending them would lower my chances of getting in…

I spent 6 weeks last summer working/researching at a lab at MSU (life sciences building). I learnt all the basic lab techniques like western blot, assays, and etc. The lab was really impressed with me and they invited me to come back this year, and the lab head said that I could work on my own on a serious research project with his guidance. The lab head also said that I should apply for HSHSP so that my research would have more structure, but I expressed doubt if I would get in. He said that he really knew Mr. Richmond well and that if he told Mr. Richmond that he wanted me in his lab, Mr. Richmond would accept me provided that I have good grades and scores. But, I am still scared about acceptance. Would my lab head’s recommendation really have weight? I have a 4.0 UW currently, a 2300 SAT (retaking in Jan), 233 PSAT, and 34 ACT (feb of sophomore yr). I am not retaking the ACT until March, so that score will not change. So, do I have a really good chance?

@neurogirl: Well, you have good grades and scores, so it looks good! If your lab mentor can really get you in, you’re golden.

@alekya97 You only have to send one score (ACT, SAT, or PSAT), but you can send multiple if you want.

My brother is applying as well. He wants to know if there is any advantage to submitting early/later.

@SpoolMan: There is no advantage to submitting early. I submitted about 5 minutes before the deadline and was admitted. And I don’t see how there could be an advantage to applying later. As long as you submit before the deadline, you should be fine.

^Even someone who applied significantly after the deadline was admitted last year. I wouldn’t risk it, though.

Could any past participants talk about their experiences with the program, as well as admission tips?
