High School Honors Science Program at Michigan State ( HSHSP )

yeah haha good luck to you guys too

@Suchwowmuchcool‌ you’ll definitely find out within a week (probably today or tomorrow)

Well, probably not today bc it’s 6:07 here in the wonderful Central Time Zone.

Best of luck to all of us who are waiting.

Somewhere on the website I read that everyone will know by May 1st … If that’s that’s the case I think I’ll die of suspense before then.

Good luck to everyone who is waiting! I’m sure most everyone who applies is very qualified and there just aren’t enough slots. So if you’re rejected, don’t feel bad at all!

Haven’t recieved mine either

any more decisions guys? i didn’t get anything yet…

Wow really? No news today?

I didn’t get anything either so I guess not :frowning: darn. This breaks the “one group per day” for decisions…guess we just have to wait now

Accepted today! Still debating whether I should go, but leaning towards attending.
Hope to see you all there!

I got rejected.
If you want stats, here you go:
4.0 uw gpa (took no ap classes freshman year, two sophomore year, and five right now)
2320 SAT
36 ACT
No research, no SAT subject two tests…wish I had known about the nature of the criteria they have for kids so I could have started earlier.
Have one AP science test to my name, Bio, a 5
Science Olympiad states…meh…
Good luck to anyone else still hoping!

@suchwowmuchcool wow, your stats, number wise at least are really good!!! Even if you didn’t get hshsp, i’m sure you’ll do well in college admissions.

I’m really nervous now though because I have kiiiiind of similar stats to you. My SAT score is pretty bad, but i have a 35 on ACT. (36 english, 36 math, 35 science, and 32 reading)… 3.98 UW gpa. 2 aps last year with 5’s in each, and 6 this year. I also have no research experience.

What time did you get your email?

I’m just going to post the FB link since I won’t be able to answer PMs over the next week: <a href=“MSU HSHSP 2014 | Facebook”>https://www.facebook.com/groups/HSHSP2014/

@sechukie I got it around 3 o’ clock. And thanks for the compliment, I actually applied to another more local one that I think I have a decent shot at. Good luck and hope you get in!

@sechukie‌ don’t worry too much about stats; mine were also similar to @Suchwowmuchcool‌’s. It seems that the essays matter much more as long as you have 2300+/35+

35 ACT should be fine, and you’ve taken more APs than me (I’m in 5 this year and haven’t taken any others before) and I have no research experience

@aops100, thanks! Thats really reassuring… haha in the way that I can still hope a little bit.

Quick question though: in the app, when we had to write essays about what we were interested in/why we wanted to go to hshsp/how we would contribute (it was the 400-600 word essay), did you focus on the how you would contribute part a lot?

I reread mine, and i literally have only 2 sentences answering that part. I’m asking because my friend who just looked over my essays said that it’s really important to focus on answering every part of the question completely… So I think my essays are going to lead to my downfall! haha

@sechukie‌, I don’t know if you have to answer each part of the question in depth, but I thought the contribution part was pretty important. I don’t know if a lot of people did this, but I sort of talked about my accomplishments in an indirect way. I wrote about my science-related extracurriculars, which are mostly competitions of some sort, and how I accomplished so much in those. I then wrote about how the knowledge and skills I gained from the extracurriculars will help me for HSHSP.

I thought this summary of accomplishments may have helped me because it shows how I am accomplished and would do good research at HSHSP. If you have the accomplishments or your science extracurriculars mentioned somewhere, I don’t think it really matters that you only had two sentences pertaining directly to your potential contributions. Good luck!

@four3tris‌ I’m going to go check if I did include any additional accomplishments! i realized after applying for all my programs that I didn’t mention extracurriculars and awards unless they were asked…which may have been a mistake. I’ll see though! Thanks so much for your help:) i’m sure youll do great at hshsp

@sechukie I mostly talked about why I would be a good fit for HSHSP instead of focusing on exactly what I would do. I said some general but heartfelt stuff, like how HSHSP would affect both me in developing as a young scientist and a person as well as it benefiting my “community, and, ultimately the human race.”

So, yeah, I never really talked about my “potential contributions” at all, more my reasons for wanting to attend. Didn’t mention any, and I mean any extracurriculars, which was a risky move for sure. I’m pretty sure the only reason I got in was cause of my second essay, the book one. Calvin and Hobbes FTW!

Hope this helps!

@jonthom99‌ i’m sure that second essay made you stand you then!!! I wrote about Freakonomics, which basically opened my eyes to the most absurd connections between ideas in our world, and influenced my way of thinking so that I wasn’t afraid to explore new possibilities. (Or at least something cheesy along the lines of that!)

but really, thanks so much guys  you all seem like amazing people and i’d be thrilled to meet you all if i got in! At most 3 more weeks of waiting…aahh!!!

No problem! I hope your wait is over soon!
