High School Honors Science Program at Michigan State ( HSHSP )

Usually how many alternates are there? And what’s the chance an alternate has at making it? Any information is greatly appreciated

@johndoe5102 were you chosen as an alternate as well?

@hk9928 yes I am an alternate

The latest is probably the 24th, as those who were accepted must confirm by that date

Is anyone who got accepted still considering whether or not to attend?

Hi, I got accepted as well and am planning to attend! Though, I was debating between this program and another one since my acceptance.

Are they still sending admission statements?

How many people usually get into this program? How is this program ranked among the other like RSI, UF SSTP, Garcia, etc?

@Apelila From what I’ve heard and read, RSI, UF SSTP, and Garcia are all more prestigious. I’m sure HSHSP is great too tho

@hydropane I would think the other way, since UF SSTP is more expensive than MSU HSHSP.

Apelila, were you accepted to hshsp and are currently deciding?

I do not see much activity happening here. Did anyone else get in? The Facebook group only has 5 members.

What’s the name of the Facebook group? My S is accepted and attending.

@curious2learn MSU HSHSP 2015

just accepted from the waitlist!

@maria93101 can you post the link? I can’t seem to find it by typing on facebook. @ivywannabe2020 congrats!

https://www.***.com/groups/351511481719818/ type “facebook” where the *** are.

Better post this before I leave CC forever. To college!

To anyone who is looking at this program for future years, I managed to collect data from 25 out of the 28 participants in the 2014 HSHSP. Here’s some rough data based on what we all submitted at the time of our applications:

Average UW GPA: 3.974
16 4.0s, lowest was 3.85

Average ACT: 33.93
Only 15/25 people took the ACT
4 36s, 6 35s

Average PSAT: 225.69
23/25 people took the PSAT
1 240

Average SAT: 2287.27
22/25 people took the SAT
2 2400s, 3 2390s

SAT2:
19/25 took SAT2s, including a cumulative:
14 Math 2
2 Math 1
10 Chemistry
6 Physics
7 Bio M
2 Bio E

Average Number of AP/IB Classes including junior year: 6

12/25 had participated in research before HSHSP, so roughly half.

State Breakdown:
8 MI
4 CA
4 NY
2 IN
2 FL
2 MD
and the rest were the only ones from their states (CT, VA, MA, AR, IL, NJ).
There were 3 schools that were represented twice (accounting for 6 of the 28 students) but everyone else was the only one from their high school.

Gender Breakdown:
Split exactly halfway, 14 M / 14 F.
I think they do this on purpose, plus it just works out easier with the dorms and everything.

I hope this helps anyone applying in future years! This isn’t meant to intimidate anybody, merely to show that it is a pretty competitive program. Remember, there is no cutoff in terms of test scores. If you feel like this would be a great opportunity for you, go ahead and apply! Dr. Richmond is a real person, not a machine, so your applications will all be given a fair chance. You never know what will happen until you actually go ahead and “run the experiment”. With that cheesy science metaphor out of the way, peace out.

Good luck!

Thank you @jonthom99 Do you have similar statistics for colleges where 2014 HSHSPers ended up?

Anyone applying this year?
