High school internships for Econ/finance?

Hi, I'm a junior in high school and I'm a prospective economics or finance (maybe both) major. I really want to get some experience, or even a glimpse at the business field before I head off to college. I briefly discussed this with my guidance counselor, and he said that its not likely that there are any internships for an inexperienced high schooler...I was thinking of asking some local banks just in case though, or even going downtown to see if any smaller firms might have something for me to do. Also, my school doesn't offer AP Econ, and I can't fit the regular Econ into my schedule for the rest of high school. I was also thinking about going to a youth business camp next summer. What are your thoughts? Where could I possibly look for an unpaid internship? Do you think it's worth a shot? Thanks!

Bump. Sorry for the impatience

If your school doesn’t offer AP Microeconomics / Macroeconomics, I think you could/should still register for either or both of the tests. I took both and they are by far THE easiest AP courses ever (other than like AP Psych). Seriously, you could just buy the Barron’s book, and self study for about a month and a half and still pull a 4 or 5 even if you’ve never taken an Economics course before. If you really do like Economics or Finance, understanding the topics covered will be a breeze.

Coming back to your question, I don’t think anyone here can help you find an internship based on your location, but what I think you should do is, try to find a small firm or even a small retail store (you don’t have to intern at a bank to learn about Economics, and working in a small business offers a lot of insight into how monetary funds are managed etc).

I’ve never been to a business camp before so I can’t speak for how beneficial it would be, but I think an Internship is much greater than a camp in terms of learning experience because if you can find the right job, you can learn a lot.

Thank you for the info. I know of a few small companies around here I might try. Any tips on how to ask them…? I don’t really have any connections so it may be awkward. Should I call them, email, or go in person?
