I am currently enrolled in a High School of Business (HSB) program at my school, and have a few questions regarding it for college applications.
First, I'll begin by explaining a bit more about the HSB. It's a program offered at about 40 highschools in the nation (mine was the first in the state, I think one of the first 15 in the country). It allows students to take college level courses throughout highschool, and upon graduation they recieve an extra diploma from the HSB. With each of these classes, you must take a final test provided by the HSB organization. If you reach an average of a certain score over all of the tests, you recieve the "Graduating with Distinction" certification. The courses that one must complete are: Principles of Business/Economics (year long), Principles of Finance (semester), Principles of Marketing (year long), Principles of Management (semester), and Business Strategies (semester). Along with these, a business internship must also be completed.

I have gotten really involved with these classes, and think that they give me a great leg-up when I enter first year college classes (there has also been talk about rewarding college credit for these courses at the state schools here-12 credits for the classes, and you enter into intermediate courses).
My concern is that colleges have no idea what this program is. I think that its an awesome program that provides the basics of business knowledge, but has it spread enough for colleges to notice it on my application?
Have any of you heard of this program previously, and how do you think it will affect my application?

Thanks in advance

Never heard of HSB, but it sounds awesome!

If you elaborate on this in your additional info section (or you ask your counselor to do so in his or her letter of rec), adcoms will better understand you level of involvement in this program.

I wish my school had this; I would totally be down!

I’m really lookin for some input here, guys. Could this really help my chances of admission to really good schools? Do you think they know about it? My GPA is well below average for great schools, and am looking for any edge I can get. Would they be willing to take a chance on a kid with potential?

This won’t be an edge for top colleges. There are lots of magnet programs out there. Apply to schools your stats suggest you can get into. Getting into top colleges is about fulfilled potential, there are way more qualified applicants than they can accept, so they’re unfortunately not in the business of looking at potential.

Where do you want to go? What are your stats?

Stats:
GPA: 4.1/3.6
ACT: 33 (33M, 33E, 33R, 32S)
SAT: Retaking, looking at a 2200
AP: Lang(taking test soon). Possibly taking more AP this summer.
Mostly honors/advanced courses.
4.44/4.0 GPA in business courses
DECA: Vice President, district, state, international competitor
FBLA: disteic and state competitor
Baseball (not playing now due to shoulder surgery)
Started business through class

I know my stats aren’t great (especially the GPA) but I have a large upward trend. My GPA by semester went like this:
Freshman:3.286/3.429, 3.571/3.833
Sophomore:3.429/4.0, 3.571/4.143
Junior:3.857/4.429, 3.833/4.5
Senior (projected):3.833/4.5, 3.833/4.5

I will also recieve the “With Distinction” diploma from the HSB.
I am not sure where I want to go. I would like to know chances for top schools (probably not very good) and maybe some suggestions for other schools I should look at.

Do you have a class rank?

No, school doesn’t rank. It’s district policy, I just asked my GC today

bummmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmp

The colleges do know about your program. Your enthusiasm is great. If you can keep your As and keep your enthusiasm, you’ll be able to write great essays.

You should get really involved in your internship. I mean, go above and beyond and create a great personal statement out of it.

You are on the right path. Good luck.
