High School Research Internships/Programs

What can anyone tell me about NIH's high school summer internship program? Is it competitive? Is research needed to get accepted? Is housing provided? Also, what are some other programs that offer research experience, besides RSI?

Thank you

If you're just looking to do research without a stipend, you won't have much difficulty finding an opportunity. What I did when I was looking for a position was to e-mail several professors from a nearby state university in my field of interest to see if they would be willing to take me on, explained why I wanted to work in that field and what I had to offer.

NIH is very competitive. They provide a stipend but no housing. You can use your stipend for the housing.

NIH is a strange system for summer interns. You submit your app but it doesn't mean anyone will read it. They keep a database of it and individual labs will search for key words, and read some entries that pop up. Also, they take a lot more college students. If you want to better your chances, better start contacting tons of labs asap.

I posted a thread about HSHSP a while back ago. You might want to do a search for it, PM me if you have any questions.
