What can anyone tell me about the NIH Summer Internship Program? Do you need to have participated in medical research? Does your research need to be published? What other summer programs are similar to this one? Is there anyone who has done it that you know?

Olive-Tree, trust me. A friend of mine who went to NIH told me that it is a very RIGGED process. If you have connections within the system, you WILL get in, and if you don't, it will be very difficult.

If you're going to be a junior next year, then try RSI. That one is a lot better in terms of being fair. It actually tries to measures your merit rather than how many people your parents knows.

There's also local internships that you can look around. There's a link somewhere in this thread that has informations on them posted.

However, as I said above w/ really poor grammar, you can look around CC or ask around your neighborhood for internships. Even if your community doesn't offer those opportunities, you can always volunteer or work on a science fair project.

NIH says you should email professors...does this mean you just look up and email the investigative scientists in the research branches? The ones with staff?
