High School Summer Internships in Bay Area, CA

What are some good high school internships (that I can get with or without applying) for a rising high school senior this summer in the Bay?

I'd be fine with any political, community service, business, or medical internship... the only problem is that most application deadlines have already passed.

Is there any program that is still accepting?

My suggestions:

1) Email as many political campaigns/offices as you can in your area to try and find one that will take an unpaid internship.

2) Ask local hospitals if you can volunteer there.

3) Email local start-up companies asking for an unpaid internship.

HitMan’s suggestions are very very valid. At this point, if you’re interested in an internship, you’ve got to take the initiative to look for ones that suit you. Best of luck!

It wouldn’t be awkward just randomly emailing companies or professors? I would assume that they would think I’m just too inexperienced or that they’re too busy…

^ it’s not too awkward because its email and most of the time people don’t even respond (at least my experience so far) :(

Basic outline for a letter:

Dear name of COO or professor or HR guy,

My name is [name] and insert info about company or professor and why you would want to work there. [BASIC highlights of resume. Good awards help here] example: I have a 3.7 UW GPA and a strong interest in politics. I co founded politics club at my school and I worked with a candidate for class president to develop a election strategy, which allowed her to win the presidency. I also won the national young politicians award for service.

oooh thanks for the advice!

Also: Connections, connections, connections.

Ask your parents to ask around. Most of my friends and my cool summer internships in high school (NASA ARC, Amgen, etc) came from asking parents/parents friends/friends parents etc if they knew anyone who could use free intern labor. Most of my friends were pretty science oriented but I feel this would also be the best way at going into business type fields as well, although I second focusing on smaller start ups (apple’s probably not taking in high school kids).

Keep in mind, you often wont be doing amazing things right away. I worked in a atmospheric chem lab at NASA and spent a pretty decent amount of time photocopying, cleaning glassware, organizing papers, and so on before I got to do really do some cool science work.

Also, consider volunteer organizations in which you’re interested and just email them saying you’re interested in their organization and want to help out.

Thanks so much for all the advice guys! I’ll keep you posted if I find anything good :)
