High School Summer Internships?

I've been searching for internships for high school students around my area that are related to my interests in advertising and publishing. I have found none. However, I have found agencies that I wish to contact through email and see if they are willing to take up a high school student who doesn't mind not being paid.

Is this advisable? And how should I introduce myself and go about asking for an internship?

Anyone can help?

I’m in the field in NYC but I’m sure its not much different in TX.

You need to stand out and be a little pushy. But you should know, asking to work for free is a pretty darn good deal for your “employer”, so speak up.

I would first research the top 8 firms in your locale, google the heck out of them, find the CEO or other top dogs, research the heck out of them and then your are prepared. Next, I’d prepare a customized resume for EACH firm.

Then call, email and call and email…until you get one to talk to you. Call early, call late, sign up to connect with them on LinkedIn. Sign up to groups they follow.

Did I saw call and email, and then call and email? PERSISTENCE is either rejected or respected. If the latter you will get an interview, if the former, you don’t want to be there anyway!

Ask for in informational interview, study their clients, bring in some packages or print ads and have an opinion.

Its a fine line between stalking and being persistent. Until you get the internship, I’d err on the side of the former!

Good luck!

Thanks so much for the advice brie99!
I have a question though. How should I got about making this customized resume?

I’d also like to know. I’m in a similar position: I want to work with a non-profit this summer (although I suspect it’s already too late :P), but it doesn’t seem as if there are any high school internships in my area. I know of literally no one at all who has had or is pursuing one, and people generally look at me like I’m crazy when I say I’m searching for one.

Anyways, about the resume - I know some high school students have particularly relevant activities (or at least ones that are superficially related), but I don’t think I do. Or rather, I can’t think of anything in specific that would qualify me to an intern at, say, United Way, a local food pantry, a corporate charitable foundation, etc. I am not even sure what a qualification would be.

Are most people “non-qualified” when they apply for their first internship? How should a high-schooler’s resume be written, given that we do not have the “big” resume items that undergrads generally do?

i know this is almost a year old, but i’m bumping this, i have the same question.
