Can some of you nice cadets discuss in very general terms, the difference between your high school GPA and your GPA (or whatever they are calling it there) at AFA?

For instance, maybe your friend or roommate was a 4.0 student in a standard public high school, but now struggles to maintain a 3.0, or even a 2.0? Have any of you or your friends or roommates experienced this? Maybe your friend has a HIGHER GPA here.

I know that the AFA kids often come home from a semester at USNA or WP with a higher GPA. Do any of you have first hand knowledge of this (Eagle comes to mind here)?

Finally, do you have suggestions for maintaining a high GPA (other than the obvious) for 4*s who might be nonplussed by their Prog reports?

yep, i had a solid 3.9 in high school, and right now i think i'm sittin around a 3 even. it's just harder. you dont have the time to give everything your absolute best because there's so much to do.. tons more academics, military stuff, training, and being a 4degree. Most of my friends are the same way.. I've heard from uppers in my squad that the academics at WP and Navy are alot easier, and they tend to get higher GPAs if they go on exchange semesters (if they actually try and dont blow it off)

uh....few cases where its higher. Many valedictorians and 4.0 people in high school fail out of here and many go on academic probation. Remember, most people come here with above a 3.5 in high school. The average graduating GPA is around a 3.0.

For me, my high school GPA (unweighted) is only a tiny bit higher than my USAFA GPA.

concerning academics at navy at least (no idea on west point), i wouldn't say the academics are way easier. cadets often hear of ppl getting 4.0s at navy, but they are usually from ppl who recive high 3.7s or 3.8s anyway. the biggest thing is navy doesn't have pluses or minuses. so a 90% is still a 4.0, instead of a 3.7. so in that way its easier to get a 4.0 because you only need a 90%, but then again an 89% only gets you a 3.0 here whereas at USAFA you'd get a 3.3.

plus since USAFA's year is so long, the material here at USNA is covered quicker. and they have progress checks at 6, 12, and 18 weeks instead of just prog and the end. so this semester has been relatively calm, but next week i have exams in all 6 of my classes.

I didn't realize that USNA operated under a significantly different calendar system. Ouch! That's like having 3 "mid-terms" at a civilian college.

Heard from one son today and he had never gotten a B before (even at local university where he went p.t. for last 2 years of high school). He said he was pretty sure he was going to experience that particular joy this semester. :)

A in Math152 (Calc II)
A in Engr101 (Class is just awesome)
B in CompSci (That will be an A as soon as we have our programming assessment)
D in Chem110 (Yes, it is horrible being in the class, but I'm .69% away from a C)

Don't know my Spanish grade yet.

Its not that the classes are harder here, its just that they cram the same amount of material into a 53 minute lesson and you cover things a LOT faster.

my GPA here at CGA is just slightly lower than my high school GPA. from what i've seen it all depends on what high school you came from. people may have had 4.0's in high school, but the academics at their school weren't as rigorous as they are at the academy so they struggle. for me the classes here are not much harder than what i had in high school so i find it a bit easier

I think there are a couple things to keep in mind regarding grades.

You really can't judge the GPA by the first semester. Why you ask. Well, some cadets have a very tough schedule first semester. Example - my cadet had Calc III, Arabic 131, Engr 100, Chem 222, (H) Physics first semester. That was very tough schedule and his GPA showed it. But 2nd semester he had Arabic 132, BehSci 110, CompSci 110, History 101, Math 245, Physics 215 (H). Although still a tough schedule by most standards, far easier than 1st semester. Well, according to him anyway and according to his grades.

Other big reason. Everyone takes Math & Science classes as core classes. So, if they are not Math & Science people, they will have a very hard time with these classes.

My schedule looked almost identical to that one. Strange thing for me, the easier my schedule, the worse I usually do. Always been that way for me.

usafa2011dad, that schedule is almost identical to my one twin's and he is working hard. He doesn't have his foreign language yet, and has some history instead, which he is acing. That's tough having the 4 tech courses and a language.
