High schooool questions

I want to be a doctor or a BME. My school doesn't have a medical program, and the engineering program is mainly for those aspiring to be civil engineers. I am planning on doing the Programming pathway(intro programming, AP computer science) and the Business pathway ( Business Essentials, etc..). Would colleges that I apply for pre-med or BME be ok with these?

Any ideas as to what extracurriculars/summer activities would look very good on the application and are good experiences? Also, is volunteering or having a job (that pays money, obviously) a better option?

Thank you and I appreciate your advice.

I didn’t know high schools with medical programs even existed. O_O Anyway, those classes look good but AP Biology would also be a good idea. If it isn’t available at your school, you could always try self-studying although I’m not sure how well that would work since it’s a science that usually requires a lab.

As for the question about volunteering or having a job, colleges usually look at volunteering before paid work. Since you’re going for pre-med as an option, volunteering at a hospital would look especially good (although it looks good no matter what your major is).

ok thanks. Honors Bio is allowed as a freshmen but not AP.

Do you have to do one of these programs? Couldn’t you just take AP classes you find relevant?

Paid job > random volunteering for the sake of getting hours
Paid job = volunteering that has relevance to your interests
Paid or unpaid internships are also good.

I think paid jobs are underrated ECs on here, possibly because the kids tend to be more affluent, but in my mind a paid job demonstrates to colleges that you’re willing to do menial labor and you don’t get everything handed to you by your parents.
I would recommend doing both, actually. As a high school student it can be hard to get a lot of hours at a paid job, so you’ll have time for summer volunteering as well.
